Amazon Pharmacy plans to expand same-day prescription delivery to nearly 4,500 U.S. cities and towns by December 31, 2026. The company says the expansion will add nearly 2,000 communities, including locations in Idaho and Massachusetts. However, this is a rollout target—not a guarantee that every resident, ZIP code, or medication will qualify.
What Amazon actually announced
Amazon announced the planned expansion on February 11, 2026. Its target is to offer same-day prescription delivery in nearly 4,500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026.
Amazon says nearly 2,000 communities will be added during 2026. Idaho and Massachusetts were specifically named among the states expected to receive new same-day service.
The headline figure refers to communities in Amazon’s delivery network. It does not mean that all addresses in those communities—or every prescription—will automatically qualify. Amazon says eligibility depends on the customer’s ZIP code and medication.

As of later official Amazon materials, same-day service was available in nearly 3,000 cities and towns. The nearly 4,500 figure remains an end-of-2026 company goal, rather than completed nationwide coverage. Read Amazon’s announcement.
Is Amazon Pharmacy already available nationwide?
Amazon distinguishes between prescription delivery generally and same-day delivery:
- Prescription delivery generally: Amazon says it delivers prescriptions to physical addresses in all 50 states.
- Same-day delivery: Available only for eligible medications and eligible ZIP codes.
- Expansion to nearly 4,500 communities: A planned rollout targeted for the end of 2026.
Amazon does not currently ship prescriptions to P.O. boxes, APO/FPO/DPO addresses, Amazon Lockers, or other pickup points listed as ineligible. Check Amazon’s current delivery rules.

- Go to Amazon Pharmacy.
- Search for the medication, or sign in and open the Pharmacy Dashboard.
- Enter or confirm the prescription and delivery address.
- Review the personalized delivery estimate and any delivery charge.
- Have your prescriber send the prescription electronically or request a transfer from another pharmacy.
- Wait for Amazon’s pharmacist review and verification before shipment.
The delivery estimate shown for your specific medication and ZIP code is more important than the city-level coverage figure. A city may have same-day service while a particular drug is unavailable for same-day delivery because of inventory, packaging, pharmacist review, order timing, or other restrictions.
Amazon identifies the following information for electronic prescribing:
- E-scribe name: Amazon.com – Amazon Pharmacy Nationwide Home Delivery
- Prescriber/pharmacy line: 855-206-3605
- Fax: 512-884-5981
Controlled-substance prescriptions must be sent directly by the prescriber through electronic prescribing, according to Amazon’s consumer information.

What “same day” means
Amazon says multiple delivery windows may be available during the day. Missing an order cutoff may move delivery to the next day, when that option is available. Timing is based on when the order ships, and the personalized estimate at checkout controls.

Where same-day delivery is unavailable, Amazon says next-day or two- to three-day delivery may be available. Its delivery page also describes standard delivery taking one to four days in many locations.
How much does Amazon Pharmacy delivery cost?
Amazon’s current delivery page lists different charges depending on the order:
- New medication: Same-day delivery is free on a customer’s first order of a new medication.
- Prime refill: Same-day refill delivery is listed at $2.99 for Prime members.
- Prescription cost: The medication price, insurance copay, cash price, coupon, or discount-program price is separate from the delivery charge.
Prime membership does not guarantee free same-day refills everywhere. Delivery charges, medication prices, eligibility, and available windows should be checked for the specific order.

- RxPass: $5 per month for eligible Prime members and eligible medications. Amazon’s February announcement said the program was available to Prime members in 48 states.
- Prime prescription savings: Amazon advertises savings of up to 80% on generic medications and 40% on brand-name medications for eligible Prime members paying without insurance.
Prime prescription savings and Inside Rx are not insurance. They generally cannot be combined with insurance benefits or certain government-funded programs for particular purchases. Amazon also says displayed insurance prices are estimates and the final price may vary. Compare the insured copay, cash price, discount price, delivery fee, and local-pharmacy price before ordering.

How Amazon is building the delivery network
Amazon says it combines pharmacy operations with its existing logistics network. Earlier company materials described pharmacies embedded in or colocated with Amazon same-day delivery sites, where pharmacy teams review and package prescriptions before handing them to delivery drivers.
The company has cited different delivery methods for different locations, including:
- E-bikes in dense areas such as Manhattan.
- Electric vehicles in suburban communities such as Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania.
- Ferries and horses for deliveries to Mackinac Island, Michigan.
- Next-day or two- to three-day delivery options in remote Alaska and Navajo Nation communities.
These examples show how Amazon is adapting its logistics network, but they do not promise same-day service for every remote community.

Amazon advertises 24/7 access to licensed pharmacists, automatic refills, and caregiver-related features. PillPack can organize recurring medicines into packets labeled by date and time, which may be useful for people taking several daily prescriptions.
Amazon Pharmacy kiosks are also available at select One Medical locations. These kiosks may allow some patients to pick up prescriptions after an appointment, but they are a limited pickup option—not the same as nationwide home delivery.
Important limitations before relying on same-day delivery
The city may qualify while your medicine does not
Coverage is based on both ZIP code and medication. Local inventory or pharmacy review can change the delivery promise before checkout.

A prescription transfer can take time
Same-day delivery is not guaranteed merely because your address is in a covered city. Amazon must receive, verify, and review the prescription before shipment.

Some medicines need special handling
Refrigerated or specially packaged medicines may require additional health checks and may have different delivery timing. Sunday delivery may also be unavailable in some areas.
Urgent medication needs require a backup plan
A delivery estimate is not a medical guarantee. If a medication is time-sensitive, the delivery date changes, or the prescription cannot be filled, contact the prescriber or a local pharmacist rather than delaying treatment while waiting for an online order.
Delivery does not replace every local pharmacy service
Patients may still need a nearby pharmacist for immediate counseling, vaccines, medication-history questions, stock checks, or in-person problem solving. A local pharmacy may also be more practical when a prescription must be filled immediately.

Amazon Pharmacy may be worth comparing for Prime members who regularly use eligible generic prescriptions, caregivers managing recurring medicines, and patients who face transportation barriers. Automatic refills, PillPack organization, and home delivery can reduce travel and coordination costs.
But the lowest advertised cash price is not necessarily the lowest total cost. Compare:

- Prime prescription savings.
- Manufacturer coupons or other eligible discounts.
- RxPass eligibility and monthly cost.
- Delivery fees.
- The price at a local or insurer-owned mail-order pharmacy.
Do not assume that joining Prime will save money. The subscription is separate from the prescription price, and insurance rules may make another pharmacy cheaper.
What the expansion means for the pharmacy market
The expansion gives Amazon a larger role in prescription fulfillment by connecting pharmacy operations with its delivery infrastructure. It could increase competitive pressure on traditional chains, mail-order pharmacies, and insurer-owned pharmacy-benefit businesses, particularly for customers who value home delivery and predictable refills.
However, the announcement alone does not establish how much market share Amazon will gain or whether it will replace local pharmacies. The practical effect will depend on medication availability, insurance participation, delivery reliability, pricing, pharmacist access, and whether patients still need in-person services.
Amazon frames the expansion as a response to pharmacy closures, staffing shortages, transportation barriers, and long trips to brick-and-mortar pharmacies. Those are Amazon’s stated reasons for the rollout, not an independent measurement of every community’s pharmacy access.
Bottom line
Amazon Pharmacy plans to reach nearly 4,500 U.S. cities and towns with same-day prescription delivery by the end of 2026, up from nearly 3,000 communities described in later official materials. The announcement is significant, but the number is a network target—not a promise that every address or medication qualifies.
Before switching pharmacies or counting on a delivery, enter your exact ZIP code and medication on Amazon Pharmacy, confirm that the prescription has been received and reviewed, and compare the complete cost—including copay, cash price, discounts, subscription fees, and delivery charges.
