One Amazon Now order in Seattle arrived 23 minutes after it was placed—faster than Amazon’s advertised target of about 30 minutes. But the December 2025 test was a six-item convenience basket, not a full grocery shop: $22.86 in products became a $30.49 bill after delivery, tax and tip. Amazon has since expanded the service well beyond Seattle and Philadelphia, but whether it makes financial sense still depends on your address, urgency and order total.
What the Seattle test found
GeekWire placed an Amazon Now order at 12:38 p.m. through the Amazon shopping app. The first estimated arrival was 1:05 p.m.; it later moved to 1:02 p.m. The order arrived at about 1 p.m., 23 minutes after checkout. The app showed the order being packed and sent out for delivery, with vehicle tracking and an option to tip the driver. GeekWire’s December 2025 test is evidence that the advertised speed is achievable in at least one instance—not that 23 minutes is typical or guaranteed.

The final $30.49 included a $3.99 delivery fee, $0.64 tax and a $3 tip. The tip was separate from Amazon’s fee. The bread arrived somewhat compressed; the pizza and hummus were still cold, and the berries appeared normal. Those observations describe this order only, not a systematic freshness or temperature-control test. The selection was limited in at least one telling way: the catalog offered a four-pack of batteries, not a larger, potentially better-value size.
What Amazon Now is—and why it can be fast
Amazon Now is an ultra-fast delivery option for a curated selection of urgent-use products. Amazon says the assortment includes groceries such as produce, dairy, bakery items, meat, seafood and frozen food, alongside drinks, personal care, baby and pet supplies, paper goods, over-the-counter medicines and some electronics accessories. Alcohol may be offered where local law permits. “Thousands of items” does not mean every product or size is available in every neighborhood.

Amazon says it uses smaller facilities close to customers, with a more limited assortment than a supermarket. Keeping stock nearby can reduce picking and travel time, while necessarily narrowing choice. GeekWire also reported on Seattle permit filings that described a planned convenience-store-like layout with a stockroom, staging shelves and quick handoffs to Amazon Flex drivers. That reporting concerned local plans; it should not be read as proof that all facilities use the same layout, hours or staffing.
Amazon advertises delivery in about 30 minutes or less. The Seattle order demonstrates that a delivery can beat that target, but it does not establish an average, reliability rate or service guarantee. Actual time can vary with inventory, order size, facility distance, traffic, weather, driver availability and demand. Apartment entry, elevators, parking and other access hurdles can also affect the last leg. In the test, even the estimate changed during fulfillment.

Availability: much wider than the original Seattle trial
Amazon launched Amazon Now in eligible parts of Seattle and Philadelphia in December 2025. By its June 2026 update, Amazon said the service was widely available in Atlanta, Dallas–Fort Worth, Philadelphia and Seattle, with expansion underway in additional U.S. cities and international markets. Amazon reported adding 80 U.S. cities and towns in Q2 2026 and reaching more than 250 cities and towns globally across nine countries. These are company-reported figures, and a city listing does not mean every address in that city is eligible.
Amazon has also named Austin, Houston, Minneapolis, Orlando, Phoenix, Denver and Oklahoma City among markets involved in its expansion. Availability changes, so check the exact delivery address in the Amazon app or on the website. Eligible customers should look for the “30-Minute Delivery” option. The catalog and delivery estimate shown for that address are more useful than a general city announcement.

Tax and any tip are separate. The Seattle test’s $22.86 merchandise subtotal was above the $15 threshold, so it did not incur the small-order fee. Its $30.49 total was specific to that basket, address and order—not a standard price for Amazon Now.

Amazon lists U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Prime is not required to use Amazon Now, but the delivery fee is substantially higher without it. That difference alone does not make a membership worthwhile: if you are considering Prime only to save on occasional urgent orders, compare the savings with the membership cost. At the published $10 difference per order, it would take about 14 such orders to equal the annual $139 price, before considering other Prime benefits, the small-order fee difference, tips or any changes in fees. This is a simple break-even illustration, not a recommendation to join; delivery charges and eligibility can change.

Before placing an order, assess the whole checkout total: item prices, delivery fee, any small-order surcharge, tax and optional tip. Amazon Now’s value is mainly time and convenience, not proven savings against local supermarkets. The available evidence does not include a controlled item-by-item price comparison with grocery stores or other delivery services.

Amazon Now is easiest to justify when the alternative is a special trip or an immediate household problem. It may suit a forgotten dinner ingredient, snacks for unexpected guests, batteries, a charger, toiletries, diapers, pet supplies or sick-day essentials—if the local catalog has what you need. A small top-up can be useful when waiting for a regular delivery is not practical.
It is a weaker fit for a weekly family shop, bulk purchases, a search for the lowest grocery prices, specialty items or a large choice of produce and brands. A small basket can also make fees loom large relative to the merchandise. As the Seattle test shows, six modest purchases can turn into a $30.49 transaction once delivery, tax and tip are included.

- Confirm eligibility. Does the 30-Minute Delivery option appear for your exact address?
- Check the local assortment. Is the right size or brand available, and are substitutions acceptable?
- Look at the urgency. Do you need the items now, or can you wait for a lower-cost option?
- Review every charge. Check the threshold, delivery fee, tax and tip at checkout.
- Consider the drop-off. Make sure the driver can reach your building and that leaving groceries unattended is suitable.
- Check the remedy for problems. Review checkout details and the order-help flow for unavailable, damaged or missing items; do not assume the Seattle test establishes how every issue is handled.
How it differs from Amazon’s other grocery services

These services overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Amazon Now is not Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods delivery, standard Same-Day delivery or the discontinued Prime Now branding. Amazon moved Prime Now functionality into the main Amazon shopping experience; Amazon Now is a newer ultra-fast service. For a planned grocery run, compare the local Same-Day or Whole Foods options rather than assuming the fastest option is the least expensive. The verdict for your budget
Amazon Now passed a real Seattle speed test: one small order reached the customer in 23 minutes. That is a useful proof of possibility, not a promise about your next delivery. The expanded service may be valuable when a nearby eligible facility has exactly what you need and the cost of waiting or making a trip is higher than the checkout premium. For routine shopping, bulk buying or price-sensitive baskets, a standard grocery trip or scheduled delivery is usually the more sensible comparison. Decide from your address-specific catalog and final checkout total—not the 23-minute headline alone.
