Amazon launched the Relay mobile app in late October 2017 to reduce the time truck drivers spent checking in and out of its warehouses. According to contemporaneous reporting published on November 17, 2017, drivers could submit cargo information before arriving and use their phones to speed up facility access. The original Relay was an Amazon logistics-operations tool—not initially a public freight marketplace.
What Amazon Relay did at launch
Relay was designed for truck drivers serving Amazon facilities. The app was available for Apple iOS and Android devices and addressed a familiar logistics bottleneck: manual processing at warehouse gates and in yards.
According to contemporaneous reporting from GeekWire, the basic workflow allowed drivers to:

Amazon also planned or had begun installing dedicated Relay lanes at some warehouses. That did not mean every Amazon facility had a special lane, and the available 2017 reporting does not document a universal rollout.

Why faster warehouse access mattered
A truck’s time at a fulfillment or sortation center is part of the cost of moving freight. Drivers may need to verify their identity, appointment, trailer, load and facility instructions before entering or leaving. Requiring repeated manual data entry or paperwork can increase gate dwell time and delay the next trip.
By collecting information ahead of arrival and digitizing the gate interaction, Relay could help Amazon and its transportation providers improve the routine truck turn. In operational terms, faster processing can support:
- Higher yard and dock throughput.
- Better utilization of drivers and equipment.
- More predictable appointment performance.
- Greater visibility into trucks moving through Amazon’s network.
The original report did not provide a verified average time saved, facility-by-facility results or a measured return on investment. It is therefore not possible to responsibly claim that Relay reduced waits by a particular number of minutes or percentage.
Relay was not initially a general freight marketplace
One of the most important distinctions about the 2017 launch is what Relay did not do. It was not initially an open load board where any trucker could find freight from unrelated shippers.
The 2017 coverage distinguished Relay from Amazon’s reported interest in a separate application that could connect truckers with shippers. Relay instead focused on Amazon’s own transportation operations and the physical interface between carriers and Amazon facilities. It should not be described as an Amazon version of Convoy or Uber Freight at launch.
That distinction also matters for drivers. Downloading the original app did not mean that any individual truck driver could immediately accept Amazon freight. The app’s initial purpose was to make facility visits more efficient for drivers already serving Amazon’s network.
Relay and Amazon’s broader transportation strategy in 2017
Amazon introduced Relay during a period when the company was showing increasing interest in trucking and freight technology. Contemporary coverage placed the app alongside reports about possible shipper-to-trucker software, freight-marketplace companies such as Convoy and Uber Freight, autonomous-truck research and investment, and Tesla’s announcement of its Semi in 2017.

Relay was the more targeted piece of that strategy. Instead of trying to digitize every freight transaction immediately, Amazon was improving a process it directly controlled: the movement of commercial trucks through its warehouses.
That focus was strategically useful. Amazon’s fulfillment model depends on frequent, coordinated truck movements. Digitizing check-in, check-out and yard instructions could give the company more operational visibility while reducing friction for carriers. The visibility benefit is an inference from the workflow, not a quantified claim reported at launch.

- Direct booking and upfront trip information.
- Route schedules, shipment notifications and commercial truck navigation.
- Electronic facility check-in and check-out.
- In-yard instructions.
- Search for fuel, food and parking along a route.
- Weekly payment claims and fraud-protection features.
- Carrier-performance systems and safety rewards.
These broader marketplace and carrier-management capabilities are later developments. They should not be projected backward as features of the late-2017 launch.
Who can use the modern platform?
Modern Relay is aimed at approved motor carriers rather than unconnected individual drivers. Amazon’s current application guidance says carriers need a valid MC number and a DOT number with interstate authority active for at least 180 days. Applicants may apply earlier but must wait until they meet the eligibility period.
Amazon also requires a carrier entity authorized for property and for-hire transportation, along with qualifying insurance, equipment and safety performance. Its FAQ lists current safety thresholds, including:

Amazon lists eligible equipment such as day cabs, sleeper cabs, certain 16- and 26-foot box trucks, 48- and 53-foot trailers, reefers and compliant high-cube containers. Exact eligibility can depend on the load and current program rules.

Amazon says Relay has no subscription fee or cost to join, but that does not make hauling free. Carriers remain responsible for insurance, equipment, fuel, maintenance, payroll, compliance and other operating expenses. Amazon’s current materials generally say applications are approved or rejected within one to three weeks, although insurance validation can take longer.
Driver verification and privacy trade-offs
Modern Relay adds requirements that were not part of the original 2017 description. A driver must be invited by an approved carrier, submit a driver’s-license photo and selfie, and provide information for a background check.
Amazon also says it may use facial-recognition technology for identity checks during loads. Drivers who decline the required selfie process cannot haul Relay loads, according to Amazon’s driver eligibility guidance.
This creates a practical trade-off: mobile identity checks and automated facility access may reduce paperwork, but participation requires drivers and carriers to provide more personal and compliance data to the platform. Those modern requirements should not be described as launch-day features.
Where Relay can still fail
Automation can speed up routine visits, but it cannot eliminate every source of delay. A driver or dispatcher should be prepared for exceptions involving:
- Incorrect cargo, appointment, trailer or driver information.
- Missed appointments or facility-specific rules.
- Yard congestion and safety holds.
- App or connectivity problems.
- Identity-verification failures.
- Equipment that does not match the load requirement.
- Missing compliance documents.
The 2017 source does not establish the exact offline or connectivity-recovery process, so drivers should follow the current facility instructions rather than assume that the original app had a particular offline mode.

Dedicated Relay lanes also vary by location. The original report described special lanes as planned or already installed at some warehouses, not as a feature available at every Amazon site.
For loads involving California, Amazon says trucks can be rejected at check-in without valid California Air Resources Board certificates. Carriers should review the current CARB guidance before dispatching a qualifying load.
Is Relay a good fit for every trucker?
Relay may be useful for carriers that already serve Amazon facilities, want direct access to Amazon spot loads or contracts, and can meet Amazon’s equipment, insurance and safety requirements. It can also be valuable to fleets that prefer centralized trip instructions, navigation and facility workflows.
It may be a poor fit for:
- An independent driver without an approved carrier relationship.
- A new motor carrier whose authority has not been active long enough.
- A company that does not meet Amazon’s insurance or FMCSA safety standards.
- A fleet with equipment outside Amazon’s accepted categories.
- A driver who does not consent to the required identity-verification process.
- A carrier seeking an open marketplace with freight from many unrelated shippers.
Relay is free to join according to Amazon, but carriers should evaluate the total economics rather than treating the absence of a subscription fee as the absence of cost. The platform can provide access and operational tools while also creating dependence on Amazon’s booking rules, performance standards, appointment systems and account decisions.
What the 2017 launch did—and did not—prove
The launch showed Amazon addressing a specific physical bottleneck in its logistics network: the time and friction involved in getting trucks through warehouse gates. It did not, by itself, prove that Amazon had launched a universal trucker marketplace, eliminated warehouse delays or created a complete replacement for traditional freight brokers.
The available launch reporting also leaves several questions unanswered, including the exact number of participating facilities, the average wait-time reduction, the detailed 2017 interface and the process used when a driver lacked connectivity or encountered an exception.
What is clearer in hindsight is the product’s direction. Relay began as a focused facility-access tool and later expanded into a broader platform for carrier load booking, trip management, navigation, compliance and digital facility operations.
