Amazon Go made shopping cashierless: customers entered with an app, picked up products and left without stopping at a register. But “AI takes over cashier jobs” was an incomplete description. The system automated the checkout interaction, not every job in a store—and Amazon’s own retail strategy later moved on. In 2024 it removed Just Walk Out from larger U.S. Amazon Fresh stores; on January 27, 2026, Amazon announced plans to close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores. Just Walk Out continues as technology offered to other operators.
What Amazon Go promised
Amazon Go began as an employee-only prototype in Seattle, with public opening anticipated in 2017. The original store was about 1,800 square feet (167 square meters)—closer to a convenience store than a full-size supermarket. The concept was simple: enter, take what you want and leave without scanning items at a checkout. The original 2017 description is in Futurism’s report on Amazon Go.
Customers used the Amazon Go app to enter. After shopping, they walked out; Amazon charged the account associated with the visit and sent a receipt. The customer-facing register and cashier interaction disappeared. That does not, by itself, establish how many jobs were eliminated or how store staffing changed.
How Just Walk Out shopping worked
- Enter: Open the Amazon Go app and use it at the entrance gate.
- Shop: Pick up products. The system associates selections with a shopper’s virtual cart.
- Change your mind: Return an item to a shelf, and the system is intended to remove it from the virtual cart.
- Leave: Walk out without scanning items at a register; the visit is charged to the shopper’s account and a receipt is provided.
Amazon describes Just Walk Out as a combination of cameras, shelf sensors, sensor fusion, computer vision and artificial intelligence; some deployments also use RFID. It is more accurate to picture a connected tracking and payment system than a single “AI cashier.” The software has to associate activity with a shopper and products, form a transaction and handle uncertain cases. Amazon’s Just Walk Out site presents the product as a way to identify purchases, pay and leave without a conventional checkout line—not as a promise that a store has no employees.
Did Amazon Go eliminate cashier jobs?
It eliminated the usual checkout task for customers using the system. That is not the same as proving that it eliminated a particular number of jobs, reduced total labor hours or left a store staffless. The available public evidence here establishes the checkout-free design, not a definitive store-level job-loss count.
- Cashier replacement means fewer conventional checkout operators handling transactions at a register.
- Labor reduction means a measurable decline in total employees or hours; the absence of a checkout counter does not establish it.
- Labor substitution means work shifts toward other tasks, such as stocking, food preparation, maintenance, customer support or exception handling.
- Labor displacement means workers lose employment rather than moving to other roles; that requires employment evidence, not an inference from store design.
Stores still need people to replenish shelves, prepare food, clean, help customers and maintain operations. Reporting on the 2024 Fresh change also raised questions about human involvement in verifying difficult transactions. The Associated Press covered the reversal and the technology’s continued use in smaller formats in its report on Just Walk Out in Amazon Fresh. The careful conclusion is that shopping could be cashierless without every transaction or store task being human-free. Claims that every shopper was manually watched, or that a particular number of hidden workers reviewed every transaction, are not established by the cited material.

Why the approach was harder to apply to a supermarket
A small convenience shop or venue concession stand offers a narrower, faster shopping trip than a large grocery store. A full grocery basket can include produce sold by weight, similar-looking packages, items picked up and put back, shared shopping among family members, age-restricted goods and discounts or loyalty offers. Those cases make accurate attribution and a clear receipt more challenging, while customers may want to see a running total or find savings as they shop.
Cashierless checkout can be appealing where quick purchases and crowded checkout lines matter most. It can be less convenient when shoppers need help, use complex discounts, do not have a compatible account or smartphone, or want to review every item before paying. Camera-based tracking and account-linked transactions can also raise privacy concerns. These are trade-offs of the format, not proof that every deployment performs poorly.
Amazon removed Just Walk Out from larger Fresh stores
In April 2024, Amazon said it was removing Just Walk Out from its larger U.S. Amazon Fresh grocery stores and emphasizing Dash Carts instead. Dash Carts let shoppers scan items as they shop and pay through the cart. Amazon’s stated rationale centered on the shopping experience, including features such as seeing a running total and finding savings. The Associated Press report describes the change and the continued role of Just Walk Out in smaller settings.

The format distinction matters: Amazon continued to promote Just Walk Out in smaller stores and for outside operators while moving away from it in larger Fresh stores. That points to a possible better fit in compact, high-throughput locations, but Amazon has not published a definitive per-store profitability accounting or exact labor-savings figure in the sources cited here. Technical complexity, implementation cost, grocery shopping patterns and customer preferences are plausible considerations, not established as the sole cause of the decision.

On January 27, 2026, Amazon announced plans to close its physical Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores and convert various locations to Whole Foods Market stores. The company said it would focus more on Whole Foods and online grocery delivery. “Various locations” does not mean every site would become a Whole Foods store, and the announcement was about these store formats—not an exit from grocery altogether. Amazon’s announcement on Fresh and Go stores also described Amazon Now, an ultra-fast delivery option intended to deliver thousands of essentials, including fresh food, in about 30 minutes or less. Availability and geographic coverage are time-sensitive.
The closure does not establish that checkout-free technology itself failed. Store economics, strategy, customer preferences and other factors can affect whether a retail chain succeeds; the public announcement does not isolate the role of Just Walk Out. Amazon continues to operate Whole Foods and online grocery services, and its announced direction also included Dash Cart and other checkout approaches.

Just Walk Out continued beyond Amazon’s own stores
Amazon says Just Walk Out remains available to third-party retailers and is used in hundreds of locations worldwide. Examples include convenience stores, stadiums, university shops, airports, workplace break rooms and some apparel or general-merchandise settings. Amazon also said in its 2026 store announcement that more than 40 North American fulfillment centers were using the technology in break rooms; that is a company-reported figure tied to the announcement, not an independently verified count. These settings can benefit from quick purchases and limited baskets, but results from one venue should not be generalized to a supermarket chain. Amazon has cited a stadium installation where sales more than doubled compared with the previous store in that location and customer-satisfaction scores improved. That is an Amazon case study, not independent evidence that all deployments deliver similar results; see the company’s Just Walk Out explanation.

What the cashierless experiment says about work and retail
Amazon Go showed that a store can remove the conventional checkout stop under the right conditions. It did not demonstrate that grocery retail can run without human work, or that checkout automation necessarily produces net job losses. To assess the labor impact, retailers and policymakers would need staffing and hours data, as well as evidence about new or reassigned roles and any human transaction review.
For shoppers, the convenience comes with practical questions: how to resolve an incorrect charge, what data the system collects, and whether an account or app is required. For retailers, installation, maintenance, software integration, customer support, privacy obligations and exception handling all matter alongside faster checkout. The result is not simply “AI versus cashiers”; it is a change in how a specific task is performed, with different trade-offs across store formats.
