Amazon suspended Palestinian software engineer Ahmed Shahrour with pay on September 8, 2025, after he used company email and internal Slack channels to urge colleagues to oppose Amazon’s involvement in Project Nimbus, a cloud contract involving the Israeli government. Amazon later terminated him on October 13, 2025, citing alleged conduct and communications-policy violations.
Shahrour and his supporters said the discipline retaliated against him for criticizing Amazon’s relationship with Israel. Amazon said it was responding to alleged misuse of company resources and threatening, coercive, or disruptive communications—not to his political viewpoint. The publicly reported record does not include the full investigation file or a court or agency finding resolving that dispute.
What happened to Ahmed Shahrour?
Shahrour was reported to be a 29-year-old Palestinian software engineer working in Amazon’s Whole Foods division in Seattle. The available reporting does not indicate that he worked on Project Nimbus or was an AWS engineer directly assigned to the contract.

On or about September 8, 2025, Amazon suspended him with pay while it investigated his communications. According to reporting by GeekWire and The Washington Post, he had emailed CEO Andy Jassy and other senior executives and posted messages in internal Slack channels urging colleagues to oppose Amazon’s relationship with Israel and Project Nimbus.

After the suspension, Bloomberg Law reported that Shahrour protested and distributed flyers at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters campus. On October 13, 2025, Bloomberg Law reported that Amazon had fired him after its investigation.
Why did Amazon suspend and fire him?
Amazon’s initial public explanation was general. The company said it investigates reports of discrimination, harassment, threatening behavior, or threatening language and takes action based on its findings. Amazon did not publicly identify the specific message or phrase that led to Shahrour’s suspension.
Later reporting provided more detail. According to an email reviewed by Bloomberg Law, Amazon alleged violations involving:
- misuse of company resources;
- numerous non-work-related messages about the Israel-Palestine conflict; and
- statements allegedly intended to “threaten, intimidate, coerce or interfere with” senior leaders and colleagues.
Those descriptions are Amazon’s allegations and policy rationale. The public reporting does not independently establish that Shahrour’s messages were legally threatening or disclose the complete text of the communications Amazon relied on.
What did Shahrour and his supporters say?
Shahrour said he was trying to pressure Amazon to end its contracts with the Israeli government because he believed internal avenues had not produced meaningful change. His supporters characterized the suspension and firing as retaliation designed to silence Palestinian or pro-Palestinian employees who opposed Project Nimbus.
That account conflicts with Amazon’s position that the discipline concerned workplace conduct and communications policies rather than opposition to Israel or Project Nimbus itself. The available reports do not show a court judgment or agency ruling determining that Amazon unlawfully retaliated against Shahrour.
What is Project Nimbus?
Project Nimbus is a multiyear cloud-services arrangement awarded in 2021 to Google and Amazon Web Services. It is commonly reported as having a value of about $1.2 billion and involves cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and related services for Israeli government entities.

Critics, including employee activists, argue that cloud and AI capabilities supplied under the project could support surveillance, military operations, or other state activities. Google has said the project principally serves civilian government ministries and that customers must comply with applicable terms and acceptable-use policies.
It is therefore more accurate to describe Nimbus as a contested government cloud contract than to state without qualification that it is exclusively military or exclusively civilian. The available material also does not establish that Amazon’s Whole Foods engineer worked on the project.

Why the case is about both speech and workplace conduct
The dispute cannot be reduced to a simple question of whether Shahrour was punished for holding a political opinion. His opposition to Project Nimbus was plainly political and workplace-related in subject matter. But Amazon’s stated rationale focused on how he allegedly used company systems and communicated with colleagues and executives.
That distinction matters. A private employer generally has more authority than the government to set rules for company email, Slack, harassment, threats, disruption, and non-work-related communications. The First Amendment ordinarily restricts government censorship; it does not generally prevent a private company from disciplining an employee.

Depending on the facts and jurisdiction, employees may have protections involving discrimination, retaliation, political ideology, labor organizing, or concerted activity about workplace conditions. The reporting reviewed here does not establish that Shahrour’s conduct was legally protected concerted activity, nor does it establish that Seattle’s local protections make his termination unlawful.

In practical terms, the same conduct can be viewed in two ways: Shahrour and his supporters saw internal advocacy against a controversial corporate relationship, while Amazon said the communications crossed neutral workplace-conduct or communications-policy boundaries. Whether those rules were applied consistently or pretextually would require evidence that is not publicly available.

Amazon’s case followed years of employee opposition to Project Nimbus. The worker-led No Tech for Apartheid campaign has challenged Google’s and Amazon’s work with the Israeli government.
Google dismissed employees after protests at offices in New York and Sunnyvale in 2024. Initial reports said 28 employees were terminated, while later reporting indicated that more than 50 were ultimately fired. Those actions provide context for the broader conflict over employee activism and corporate contracts, but they do not prove that Amazon’s decision was either lawful or unlawful. The companies cited different conduct and applied their own workplace processes.

What remains unresolved?
The public record does not establish:
- the full text of Shahrour’s internal emails and Slack posts;
- the exact Amazon policy language applied to each communication;
- the complete findings of Amazon’s investigation;
- whether Shahrour challenged the termination in court, before a labor board, or before a civil-rights agency; or
- whether any court or agency has ruled that the termination was unlawful retaliation or discrimination.
Those gaps make it too strong to say Amazon fired Shahrour solely because he opposed Israel or Project Nimbus. They also make it too strong to treat Amazon’s characterization of the communications as an independently proven finding.
The clearest way to understand the dispute
Amazon first suspended Shahrour after he used company email and Slack to campaign against Project Nimbus, then fired him after an internal investigation. Amazon says it enforced workplace conduct and communications rules. Shahrour’s supporters say those rules were used to suppress opposition to a controversial contract and silence Palestinian employees.
Both the political subject of the messages and the alleged manner of communication are material. The latest reported employment outcome is termination, but the available public evidence does not resolve whether Amazon’s stated rationale was consistently and lawfully applied.
