Amazon did not cancel its five-day return-to-office mandate. Ahead of the planned January 2, 2025 rollout, employees in some cities were told to remain on the previous three-days-per-week schedule because their assigned buildings lacked enough ready-to-use capacity or were still being reconfigured.
What Amazon announced
In a September 2024 memo, CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon expected corporate employees to work from the office five days per week beginning January 2, 2025. That replaced the broad policy requiring at least three office days per week.
The policy applied to Amazon’s corporate workforce, not every person working for Amazon. Approved remote-work exceptions and certain role-based arrangements remained possible. Amazon also said it planned to restore assigned desks in locations that had used assigned seating before the pandemic, including its U.S. headquarters areas in Puget Sound and Arlington. Some locations, particularly in Europe, were expected to continue using agile seating.

Which cities experienced delays?
Media reports identified several U.S. cities where some employees were not expected to move immediately to five days per week:

This is a summary of media reports, not an official building-by-building list from Amazon. The relevant unit was generally the employee’s assigned office or building, so the delay should not be interpreted as applying to every Amazon employee in an entire city.
International reports also described some employees in locations including Beijing, Shenzhen, Bangalore, Santa Clara and Tel Aviv as remaining on a three-day schedule. Those examples were reported with less detail than the U.S. locations and should not be treated as a complete global list.

How long did the delays last?
The timing varied by location. Some Dallas employees were reportedly told that full five-day occupancy would not be possible until March or April 2025. Employees associated with Amazon’s Midtown Manhattan office were reportedly told they might not have enough space for full-time attendance until May 2025. GeekWire reported that some delays could last as long as four months.
These were location-specific estimates, not a single nationwide postponement. The available reports did not establish a precise number of affected employees or confirm one final readiness date for every office.
Why was there not enough office capacity?
Reports initially framed the issue as Amazon lacking enough office space or desks for everyone to attend five days a week. Amazon disputed the idea that the company had simply run out of real estate.

In comments reported by CNA, Amazon said most buildings would be ready on January 2, while some locations needed additional readiness work. Offices had been adapted for hybrid attendance, and the company needed to reconfigure buildings, restore desk assignments or otherwise prepare them for full-time occupancy.

The distinction matters. The problem was not necessarily that Amazon had no offices available in a city. Rather, some assigned buildings did not yet have enough permanent, ready-to-use workstations for all employees to attend every weekday. The short timetable between the September announcement and the January implementation date also left limited time to complete the work.
What did affected employees do?
Employees whose assigned locations were not ready were generally told to continue following the existing guidance of working from the office three days per week until their buildings could support the five-day arrangement.

That temporary continuation was not the same as receiving a new permanent remote-work exemption. It also did not necessarily mean employees could choose any Amazon building, relocate, work fully remotely or disregard later instructions. Questions about an individual’s assigned location, desk, transfer options, remote-work status or revised reporting date were controlled by Amazon’s internal communications and employment arrangements.

No. The evidence available for the rollout described an implementation delay for selected locations, not a companywide cancellation or softening of the five-day expectation.
Most Amazon corporate employees were still expected to follow the new schedule from January 2, 2025, subject to approved exceptions and role-specific arrangements. The affected offices temporarily remained on the previous schedule because facilities were not ready. That created different schedules for different buildings, but it did not amount to a universal return to hybrid work.

Why the story mattered
The delay exposed a practical tension in the corporate return-to-office push. Amazon was asking employees to return full time at the same time that some offices were still configured for hybrid attendance. The company therefore had to preserve a three-day schedule in locations where it was trying to end that arrangement.
For employees, the immediate issue was commute planning, childcare, housing and other costs associated with office attendance. For employers and commercial-real-estate observers, the episode illustrated the difficulty of matching office capacity, desk arrangements and building operations to a rapid change in attendance policy.
It also showed why headlines describing Amazon as having “no office space” can be misleading. The reporting supports a narrower conclusion: some buildings lacked sufficient ready capacity, while Amazon characterized the shortfall as a combination of reconfiguration and readiness work.

What the reports did not establish
- They did not establish the exact number of affected employees.
- They did not show that every employee in an affected city received a delay.
- They did not establish a permanent remote-work right for those employees.
- They did not prove that Amazon deliberately forced employees to leave.
- They did not confirm the present-day policy for every Amazon location in 2026.
The best-supported description is therefore precise: Amazon’s five-day corporate office mandate remained in place, but some buildings and employee groups received temporary implementation delays while the company completed capacity and reconfiguration work.
