Amazon launched Amazon Cash in the United States on April 3, 2017, giving shoppers a way to add physical cash to an Amazon balance at participating stores and then spend that balance on Amazon.com. It required no credit or debit card and was aimed at cash-preferring and underbanked customers. It was a loading service—not a credit product, bank account, debit card or direct “cash” option at checkout.
Amazon’s developer materials still describe Amazon Cash, but current consumer availability and participating-store coverage are not established by a public retailer directory in the available sources. Confirm that the service is offered at your intended store before bringing cash.

How Amazon Cash worked
- Create a barcode. The customer signed in to Amazon, opened amazon.com/cash or the Amazon mobile app, and displayed or printed a personalized barcode.
- Visit a participating retailer. At launch, Amazon said the service covered more than 10,000 participating locations.
- Present the barcode and cash. The cashier scanned the barcode, the customer stated the amount, and paid in cash. Amazon’s technical documentation also describes account-linked phone-number identification at some participating locations.
- Verify the credit. The amount was generally added to the account’s Amazon Gift Card balance in real time. Customers were advised to keep the receipt until the balance appeared.
- Shop on Amazon. The balance could be applied to eligible Amazon.com purchases under normal Amazon Gift Card restrictions.
A barcode could be shown on a phone or printed on paper. Do not hand over cash until the cashier confirms that the barcode or phone-number transaction is accepted.

Amazon Cash addressed a practical gap: someone could have cash but no bank account, credit card or debit card with which to shop online. It also gave card-averse customers an alternative to entering card details and offered more flexible loading than buying a fixed-denomination gift card.

For Amazon, the service brought cash-preferring shoppers into its marketplace. Participating physical retailers could gain additional store visits. Contemporary coverage described it as a financial-inclusion and customer-acquisition effort, not as a new form of consumer credit. See Retail Dive’s launch analysis.
Fees and loading limits
Amazon described Amazon Cash as free to customers. That means no Amazon Cash loading fee; it does not make every other funding option, such as a prepaid debit card, fee-free.

Therefore, $15 was a launch-era reported minimum, not a timeless universal rule. Check the store’s terms and the account flow for the limit that applies to your transaction.

Historical launch examples included CVS, Speedway, Sheetz, Kum & Go, D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, VG’s Grocery and GameStop. In November 2017, 7-Eleven announced Amazon Cash at nearly 8,000 U.S. stores, with a reported $15–$500 range.

Those announcements establish historical participation, not availability in 2026. Amazon’s developer portal continues to describe the product, but the available public sources do not verify a current consumer-facing store locator. Treat any old retailer list as historical and confirm participation before loading money.
What happens when a load goes wrong
The barcode will not scan
- Raise your phone’s screen brightness or print a fresh barcode.
- Ask whether the location supports Amazon Cash and whether its scanner reads phone displays.
- Do not pay until the cashier confirms the transaction.
The balance does not appear
- Check that you are signed in to the intended Amazon account.
- Keep the receipt and allow time for the transaction confirmation.
- Look for a printed gift-card claim code. Amazon says a phone-number transaction may produce one when the number cannot be matched to a verified account.
- Redeem the code through Amazon’s gift-card redemption flow, or contact Amazon and the retailer with the receipt.
The wrong account or phone number was used
Account matching matters. A phone-number load may not automatically credit the account if the number is not linked or verified, so review the account details before the cashier completes the transaction.

A refund is needed
Amazon’s Balance Load documentation describes Amazon Cash transactions as non-refundable except where required by law. Do not load money assuming it can be reversed like a cash purchase.
What Amazon Cash could—and could not—fund
Amazon Cash converted cash into an Amazon Gift Card balance. That balance could pay for eligible Amazon.com orders, subject to Amazon’s normal gift-card restrictions. It was not a general-purpose payment card, and it should not be assumed to cover every Prime membership, subscription, digital service or recurring charge without another eligible payment method. Check the specific checkout or subscription requirements.

Amazon Cash versus other options

Amazon’s incentives materials say Amazon Gift Cards do not expire and have no program fees. That does not make them refundable or usable outside Amazon.
Important limitations before loading cash
- You must travel to a participating physical location.
- Retailer daily limits and implementation details may differ.
- Money loaded into the wrong account can be difficult to recover.
- Once converted, the money is no longer ordinary cash and generally cannot be withdrawn.
- A balance that is too small for an order may require another load or an additional eligible payment method.
- Amazon Cash does not provide borrowing, overdraft protection, cash withdrawal or a bank account.
Amazon Cash’s current status
Amazon’s Incentives API overview and Balance Load documentation still describe Amazon Cash as a way to load an Amazon Gift Card balance at participating brick-and-mortar locations. That documentation is a current product signal, but it does not establish a nationwide consumer rollout, a particular retailer’s participation or a current public enrollment path. Verify all three before relying on it for a purchase.
