Amazon AI shopping personalization is not one product: it spans familiar product recommendations, AI-generated shopping help, and tools that can track prices or take purchasing actions. Amazon’s current consumer-facing experience is Alexa for Shopping. Amazon says it renamed and integrated its former Rufus assistant into that experience on May 13, 2026. In the U.S., customers can use it on Amazon’s app and website without Prime or an Echo device. It can make shopping more convenient, but its recommendations are not a guarantee of the best product or lowest price—and personalizing them can involve sensitive household and shopping information.

What Amazon AI shopping personalization includes

Amazon has used machine learning to recommend products across its shopping experience for years. Those recommendations may appear on the homepage, in search, on product pages, in deals, and in emails. Newer AI features add conversational discovery and personalized explanations, while agentic features can help build a cart, set a price alert, reorder an item, or automatically buy an eligible product under specified conditions.

That means personalization can affect both what a shopper sees and how Amazon presents it. Amazon has described, for example, tailoring product-description emphasis to a shopper’s apparent interests, such as highlighting “gluten-free” for someone who often searches for gluten-free products. That is an example of the company’s approach, not a promise that every customized description is complete or accurate. Amazon’s explanation of AI-generated recommendations and descriptions offers more detail.

Rufus is now part of Alexa for Shopping

Amazon introduced Rufus as a generative-AI shopping assistant in 2024. According to Amazon, on May 13, 2026, Rufus was renamed and integrated into Alexa for Shopping. Older pages may still use the Rufus name for capabilities that now sit within the newer experience. Amazon’s Rufus launch announcement provides the earlier context; its Alexa for Shopping announcement describes the current positioning.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Amazon says Alexa for Shopping combines shopping knowledge and capabilities associated with Rufus with Alexa+ conversations and personal context. It can draw on information from Amazon and the wider web, and Amazon describes the service as able to use a customer’s shopping history and conversations to personalize help. In the U.S., Amazon says customers can access it in the Amazon Shopping app and on the website without a Prime membership or an Echo. A fuller visual shopping experience is also available on supported Echo Show devices for Alexa+ customers, initially Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21. Availability and features can vary by country, marketplace, device, account, and rollout.

What information can shape recommendations?

Amazon says its personalization can use signals such as:

  • Purchase, browsing, and search history.
  • Reviews a customer has written and Lists they have created.
  • Conversations with Alexa for Shopping and preferences a customer states.
  • Household context, such as family members or pets, and dietary needs.
  • Product details and shopping factors such as price, availability, delivery speed, reviews, and return rates.

Amazon describes these signals in its About You information and its overview of generative and agentic shopping tools. The company does not publish a complete formula showing how every signal is weighted across each category and shopping surface. A list of signals is not a full account of why any particular result appeared.

Personalization is also not the same as neutrality. Amazon is the retailer, operates a marketplace with third-party sellers, and sells advertising. A personalized recommendation is not automatically a paid placement, but shoppers should look for any sponsorship label and distinguish relevance to their profile from an impartial, market-wide ranking. Amazon does not disclose a complete Alexa for Shopping ranking formula.

What shoppers can ask it to do

Find products by need or activity

Instead of knowing the right product name, a shopper can describe the job to be done: “Find a rain jacket for a weekend hike,” “What do I need to make a soufflé?” or “Which headphones might work for commuting?” Amazon says Alexa for Shopping can help explore products by activity, occasion, or use case. Treat the results as a starting point and check the actual listings.

Compare items and build a shopping guide

The assistant can compare products using features, prices, reviews, and priorities a shopper states. Amazon also offers AI Shopping Guides for selected product types to explain categories and organize research. These summaries can save time, but they may compress disagreements or miss a distinction that matters to you. Open the listings, verify specifications against the manufacturer, and read reviews relevant to your particular concern. Amazon’s Shopping Guides announcement describes the categories and scope it reported at the time; coverage should not be assumed universal.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Check price history and set a target

Amazon says its price-history tool offers 30-, 90-, and 365-day views, with country and rollout limits. Its May 1, 2026 announcement listed availability in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and India; 365-day insights were rolling out in the U.S., U.K., and India. On an eligible product page, tap Price History beside the price, or ask Alexa for Shopping, “What’s the price history?” or “Is this the lowest price recently?” See Amazon’s price-history instructions for the stated rollout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price history is context, not a guarantee of the lowest price across retailers or proof that an item is worth buying. Price can differ by variation, seller, condition, region, and promotion. For an expensive purchase, compare other retailers and confirm the exact item and seller.

Use alerts and auto-buy cautiously

Alexa for Shopping can track a target price and, for eligible products and accounts where supported, automatically purchase an item when the target is reached. Before enabling an automatic purchase, verify the exact product identifier, size, color, capacity, seller, shipping method, and quantity; confirm the target applies to the variation you want. Check your payment and delivery details and know how to cancel or change the instruction. A price drop does not mean the product is good value, and an old need, changed seller, or different package can turn convenience into an unwanted order. Avoid auto-buy where formulation, compatibility, expiration, safety, or substitution matters.

Reorder and search visually

Amazon says the assistant can help reorder essentials using previous purchases or preferences. “Usual” is not always correct: package sizes, household needs, prices, formulations, and sellers can change. Amazon Lens also lets shoppers photograph, upload, or scan an item to find exact or similar products; Lens Live uses computer vision to match objects to Amazon’s catalog. A visual match does not establish identical specifications, quality, authenticity, or compatibility. See Amazon’s descriptions of Lens and Lens Live.

Follow interests

Amazon has described an Interests feature that lets shoppers write natural-language prompts about hobbies, product types, attributes, or price limits, then receive notices about relevant new items, restocks, or deals. The feature was initially described as available to a small subset of U.S. customers. Its current availability and relationship to Alexa for Shopping can vary, so do not assume every account has a separate Interests screen. Amazon’s Interests announcement states the launch scope.

How to inspect and change personalization information

Amazon’s About You interface is intended to let customers view and update information used to tailor their shopping experience. Amazon says shoppers can add preferences, correct details, update information, or remove information they do not want used for personalization. As of the instructions Amazon published, the paths are:

  • EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
  • Amazon Shopping app: Open the app, tap Me, tap your name, then tap About You.
  • Desktop: Hover over your name near Account & Lists, click your name or choose Who’s shopping?, select a profile, then open About You.

Labels and placement can change by country, device, account, and app version. If the path is different, search Amazon’s current help or in-app interface for “About You.” You can also ask Alexa for Shopping, “What do you know about me?” See Amazon’s About You explanation.

Review this information when your household, diet, interests, or priorities change. Remove details that are irrelevant or more sensitive than necessary to share. But editing About You should not be treated as proof that all Amazon data collection, advertising personalization, or cross-service use has stopped. Account, Alexa, browsing-history, and advertising controls are separate matters; consult Amazon’s current privacy documentation for the controls and deletion rules that apply to your account and region. Amazon’s profiling report and 2026 DMA compliance report discuss profiling and data practices, but neither makes About You a universal off switch.

When personalization helps—and when to slow down

AI shopping assistance is most useful for narrowing a broad category, translating a vague need into options, organizing a comparison, or handling a repeat purchase. A system with relevant household context can save effort. Price history can add useful context before a purchase. None of these benefits makes the assistant an independent buyer’s advocate or a product tester.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Past activity can also preserve a mistaken assumption. A one-time purchase may reflect an old need, and a recommendation can be relevant to past behavior without being right for today. Generated explanations may misread a listing, confuse product variants, overstate compatibility, or summarize reviews in a way that obscures minority complaints. Check particularly carefully for health, safety, and regulated products, including medicines and supplements, child-safety products, protective equipment, food-allergy decisions, medical devices, electrical products, vehicle parts, and items requiring professional installation. Do not rely on a conversational recommendation alone for suitability.

A buyer’s checklist for an AI recommendation

  1. Open the complete product page, not just the assistant’s summary.
  2. Confirm the selected size, color, capacity, bundle, condition, and other variant details.
  3. Check the seller, fulfillment method, delivery date, return policy, and warranty.
  4. Read recent critical reviews for the issue that matters to you, such as fit, noise, durability, skin sensitivity, or compatibility.
  5. Verify technical specifications and safety claims with the manufacturer or an appropriate professional.
  6. Review price history, then compare other retailers for a consequential purchase.
  7. Look for sponsorship labels and do not confuse personalization with impartiality.
  8. Before using auto-buy, confirm the product, seller, target, payment, address, and cancellation conditions.

What sellers and advertisers should take from the change

For sellers, conversational discovery means shoppers may describe a need rather than search a product name. Clear, accurate product attributes, variant information, availability, delivery details, and reliable customer feedback make a listing easier to assess. But Amazon does not publicly disclose the complete Alexa for Shopping selection formula. Claims that a particular “Rufus optimization” tactic guarantees visibility or ranking gains are not supported by the information available here. The rename does not justify treating an opaque recommendation system as a checklist sellers can game.

Amazon’s own announcement reported that Rufus served more than 300 million customers in 2025; that is an Amazon-reported figure, not an independently verified measure. Likewise, Amazon described its Shopping Guides as covering more than 100 product types in its announcement, not as a guarantee that every product type or shopper has the feature. Readers and businesses should distinguish company-reported scale and capabilities from independent evidence.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
