Amazon has acquired RIVR Technologies AG, a Zurich-based startup developing robots that use wheels and legs to move packages over stairs, curbs and uneven ground. The deal, reported on March 19–20, 2026, is intended to support early testing of robots that could help delivery associates carry packages from vans to doorsteps. Amazon has not disclosed the purchase price, announced a customer-facing rollout or said it will replace drivers with autonomous robots.
What Amazon bought
RIVR builds wheeled-legged robots for the difficult final stretch of delivery: getting a parcel from a parked vehicle to a home or business entrance. Amazon confirmed the acquisition in a notice to third-party delivery contractors, while RIVR co-founder and CEO Marko Bjelonic also announced it. The announcement was relatively low-key, and public reporting does not give a transaction price, integration schedule or fleet size. TechCrunch reported the acquisition; Euronews described Amazon’s contractor notice and testing plans.
The distinction between buying a robotics company and launching a delivery service matters. Amazon’s stated near-term plan is to test the technology, work with delivery associates and gather feedback and real-world data before deciding whether or how to scale it. There is no confirmed public launch date, city rollout or promise of driverless doorstep service.

Wheels are efficient on smooth pavement. Legs can help a machine step over obstacles and negotiate stairs. RIVR’s design combines the two, aiming to handle the transitions that can stop a conventional small delivery robot: a curb, a short flight of steps, broken pavement or a path that is not level. The company describes its machines as part of its “Physical AI” work, combining perception, machine learning and movement in real environments. Its company history traces the business from research into commercial robotics.

Coverage has described the robot as resembling a dog on roller skates. Reports identify the flagship machine as Rivr Two and put its payload at more than 60 pounds (about 27 kilograms) and its top speed at roughly 8.7 mph (about 14 km/h). Those are reported specifications, not independently verified performance figures for an Amazon deployment. Reports also describe stair climbing and other obstacle-handling capabilities, but a demonstration does not show that a robot can reliably navigate every kind of porch, gate, apartment entrance or weather condition. The target is the last stretch, not the whole route
Most of a delivery route is not a robot’s hardest problem. A van can bring a parcel close to an address, yet the final approach may involve parking, a long walk, steps, a narrow path or an entrance that is hard to reach. At apartment buildings, access may depend on an intercom, key, elevator or resident. A robot that can handle stairs still has to get through the whole route, place the package appropriately, provide proof of delivery and return or meet its operator.

Amazon’s stated use case is narrower than an autonomous vehicle taking parcels from a depot and driving them across town. The company says RIVR technology could help associates move packages from delivery vehicles to customers’ doorsteps. That could mean a robot carrying some of the load while a worker remains involved; the eventual degree of supervision is not public. It would be inaccurate to describe the acquisition as a confirmed rollout of unattended robot couriers.

RIVR’s history and Amazon’s earlier investment
RIVR began as Swiss-Mile, a company spun out of ETH Zurich’s Robotic Systems Lab. According to RIVR’s account, it was incorporated in April 2023 and adopted the RIVR name in January 2025. Its earlier ambitions included logistics, monitoring, construction and security; its more recent focus has leaned toward last-mile delivery.

Amazon was not a new connection. Bezos Expeditions and Amazon’s Industrial Innovation Fund participated in a roughly $22 million 2024 funding round, according to RIVR’s funding announcement. TechCrunch reported total funding of about $25 million. Reports have put RIVR’s valuation around $100 million, while another summary cited about $110 million. Those are estimates associated with earlier financing, not the acquisition price, which has not been disclosed. The prior investment suggests Amazon had an opportunity to learn about the company before buying it; it does not establish that an acquisition was inevitable.
A pilot is evidence of testing, not proof of scale
RIVR ran a delivery pilot with Veho in Austin, Texas, in 2025. Its CEO said the company hoped to scale to about 100 robots by 2026, but public reporting does not establish whether it reached that target before the acquisition. A pilot can reveal how a robot performs on selected routes; it does not prove the economics or reliability of a fleet across different climates, buildings and local rules.

That distinction is important to the business case. A robot could reduce some repeated walking and carrying, potentially make routes less physically demanding, or let a worker cover more stops. But those are possible benefits, not demonstrated cost savings from Amazon’s deployment. The economics also depend on how many deliveries each machine can support, how often it needs charging or repair, whether a worker must accompany it, and what happens when it cannot complete a stop.
What has to work before a wider rollout
- Real-world mobility: Stairs differ in height, width, surface and condition. Wet leaves, snow, ice, gravel and loose objects can affect traction. A robot must also handle sidewalks obstructed by construction, parked vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians and pets.
- Building access: Gates, locked doors, intercoms and elevators can make a route impossible without a person. Amazon has not said whether RIVR robots will enter apartment buildings or how they would gain access.
- Safety and accountability: Testing must establish how the system behaves around children, pets and people with mobility disabilities, and what happens if it damages property or injures someone. Public reporting does not spell out the eventual supervision, insurance or liability model.
- Delivery details: Package placement, theft prevention, proof of delivery, customer instructions and recovery from a blocked path are practical parts of the job. Stair-climbing alone does not answer them.
- Privacy and consent: Navigation may involve sensors and mapping around homes and public spaces. Amazon has not publicly set out RIVR-specific policies for data collection, customer opt-outs or access to private property.
These open questions are not proof that the technology cannot work. They are the gap between a robot that can move through a demonstration route and a dependable service that works at scale. The acquisition gives Amazon the ability to develop and test the technology more directly, but does not answer how it will handle those trade-offs.

What it could mean for delivery work
Amazon has framed the technology as working alongside delivery associates, with safety and worker feedback part of the early testing. That is the best-supported description of the near-term intent. It is not a guarantee that jobs, routes or contractor arrangements will remain unchanged if the technology proves useful.
If a robot can reliably take packages from a vehicle to multiple doors, a worker might spend less time carrying loads or could serve more stops. Over time, that could affect route design, staffing and the economics of delivery contractors. Amazon has not announced a labor model for RIVR: it has not said who would operate or own the machines, whether a worker would supervise one robot or several, or how contractors would be paid. Claims that the acquisition already means drivers will be replaced go beyond the evidence; claims that it can have no workforce effect would also be premature.
How this fits Amazon’s robotics strategy
Amazon already uses robots in fulfillment operations, but navigating a warehouse is different from moving through public streets and varied residential properties. RIVR addresses that less controlled environment and a relatively specific part of delivery. It also differs from Amazon’s earlier Scout effort, which was designed as a small autonomous vehicle traveling toward customers. RIVR’s reported role is closer to the transfer from a delivery vehicle to the door, potentially with a human worker involved. It will be whether people, packages and robots can move safely and predictably through many different delivery environments at a cost and level of reliability that justify the extra equipment and supervision.
What the deal means now
Amazon’s acquisition is a concrete investment in the difficult final portion of package delivery, backed by a company it had previously supported as an investor. For now, the strongest conclusion is limited: Amazon plans early testing of RIVR’s technology to assist delivery associates. A nationwide rollout, independent doorstep delivery and a specific effect on driver jobs remain unconfirmed.
