Yes—Alphabet’s acquisition of Intersect is a major AI-infrastructure bet, but more specifically it is a move to secure and accelerate the power, sites, and development capacity needed to build data centers. Alphabet announced the deal at $4.75 billion in cash plus assumed debt on December 22, 2025; it closed on March 10, 2026. Alphabet later reported a preliminary purchase price of about $5.9 billion after adjustments, a different measure rather than a conflicting headline price.
What Alphabet acquired—and why it matters
Intersect develops energy and digital infrastructure, including projects that bring power generation, storage, and data centers together. Alphabet said the acquisition would help bring both data-center and generation capacity online faster. This is not an acquisition of an AI-model or chip company. It is a move upstream in the infrastructure chain: from supplying computing equipment and cloud services toward securing some of the physical conditions that let those systems operate.
AI infrastructure includes more than servers and accelerators. It also encompasses data-center buildings, land, cooling, backup systems, electricity, grid connections, and the expertise required to permit, finance, and construct projects. Intersect fits mainly in the energy, facilities, and development layers. Its value to Alphabet is therefore tied to the possibility of coordinating power and data-center development—not to a new AI product.
Intersect says its platform covers “land, steel, and power,” and reports about $15 billion of infrastructure operating or under construction and 10.8 GW in construction or operation by late 2028. Those are company-reported figures, not a measure of completed capacity acquired by Alphabet. A project pipeline, a project under construction, and a fully energized data center are materially different things.

Why electricity has become strategic for AI
Training and serving AI models require specialized computing hardware. That hardware runs in data centers, which need continuous electricity as well as cooling, network access, land, and backup systems. If a site cannot obtain enough power or a timely grid connection, the data center can be delayed even when its servers and funding are ready.
New generation and transmission infrastructure can take years to permit and build. Google’s December 2024 account of its energy strategy described bottlenecks in generation and transmission on many U.S. grids, and said the time from proposal to construction for U.S. power projects had more than doubled compared with earlier periods. Google’s proposed response was to co-locate data centers with new clean-energy projects where possible. Google’s explanation of the co-location approach presents it as a way to support both the data-center load and the wider grid—not as a way to make a facility independent of the grid.
That makes power a potential competitive constraint, though not the only one. Chips, construction crews, permitting, water, transmission, and customer demand can all constrain expansion. The Intersect deal signals that Alphabet considers the development and availability of energy infrastructure important enough to bring closer to its own operations.

A partnership that became an acquisition
The deal followed an existing relationship. In December 2024, Google, Intersect, and TPG Rise Climate announced a plan to develop data centers alongside new clean-energy generation. The acquisition is best understood as a deeper step into that model, not a sudden departure from Google’s prior energy strategy. Google’s acquisition announcement said the transaction would accelerate the delivery of data-center and generation capacity.
Ownership could give Alphabet earlier access to a development pipeline, closer coordination between power and data-center schedules, and an in-house team familiar with site selection, permitting, project finance, and construction. Those are strategic inferences from the transaction and the prior partnership, not guarantees that every project will move faster. The central logic is vertical integration: aligning the development of computing capacity with the power and sites that make it usable.
The deal timeline and the two price figures
- December 22, 2025: Alphabet announced an agreement to acquire Intersect for $4.75 billion in cash plus the assumption of debt.
- March 10, 2026: The acquisition closed.
- March 31, 2026 filing: Alphabet reported a preliminary purchase price of approximately $5.9 billion after purchase-price adjustments.
The $4.75 billion figure was the announced cash consideration, with debt assumed in addition. The roughly $5.9 billion figure is the preliminary accounting purchase price after adjustments, not a replacement for the original announcement. Alphabet’s preliminary allocation included $5.111 billion of property and equipment, $2.170 billion of goodwill, $1.214 billion of debt, and $205 million of net liabilities assumed. These components are part of preliminary purchase accounting; the allocation may be revised as accounting is finalized. Alphabet’s first-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q provides the filing details.

What was carved out of the transaction
It would be misleading to say Alphabet acquired every Intersect asset without qualification. TPG said the transaction covered Intersect’s digital-power business, while a portion of its grid-tied clean-energy assets was spun out as IPX Power, an independent power producer. TPG reported that IPX inherited a portfolio of 4.4 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity and 8.8 GWh of battery storage in construction or operation. TPG’s closing announcement describes the carve-out; Intersect also notes that IPX assumed ownership of part of the solar and storage portfolio on its solutions page.

Generation capacity, battery storage, a data-center site, a grid interconnection, a power contract, and an operating facility are not interchangeable assets. The acquisition’s strategic value depends on how projects progress through development and connect to usable electricity and computing capacity. Headline gigawatt figures alone do not tell readers how much power is available at a given hour or how many data-center megawatts are already operational.
Clean power is not the same as round-the-clock power
Intersect and Google emphasize clean energy, including solar and storage. But renewable nameplate capacity does not automatically provide firm electricity every hour. Solar output changes with weather and time of day; batteries can shift energy but have finite capacity and duration. A data center with a continuous, high-utilization load may also rely on grid power, firm contracts, or dispatchable resources.

Intersect says its Meitner Energy Center combines more than a gigawatt of wind, solar, and battery storage, while a minority share of demand is met by on-site gas for firming and reliability. This illustrates an important distinction: a project can add substantial clean generation without eliminating fossil-fuel use or becoming electrically independent from the grid. Annual clean-energy matching, hourly delivery, and a facility’s actual emissions profile are related but different measures.

Intersect should not be treated as the explanation for all of Alphabet’s AI spending. Alphabet reported $35.7 billion in capital expenditures in the first quarter of 2026, primarily reflecting technical infrastructure, and said it expected to significantly increase 2026 investment in servers, networking equipment, and data centers relative to 2025. It also reported $75.6 billion in future lease payments, primarily for data-center leases that had not commenced as of March 31, 2026.

For investors and business readers, the distinction matters: the acquisition may help with a particular constraint, while Alphabet’s overall capital spending also covers computing equipment, facilities, leases, and other needs.

Does ownership solve the power problem?
It may improve Alphabet’s ability to manage a difficult part of the supply chain, but it does not remove the underlying risks. A useful way to judge the strategy is against five questions:
- Speed: Can in-house development and coordinated project schedules bring capacity online sooner than relying solely on outside procurement?
- Control: Does ownership improve access to sites, power projects, and sequencing decisions?
- Reliability: Can the energy mix provide dependable power for a continuous data-center load, including when renewables are unavailable?
- Economics: Is owning the development platform more cost-effective or predictable than buying capacity from others?
- Flexibility: Can Alphabet adapt if demand, technology, regulation, or the preferred energy mix changes?
The deal’s logic appears strongest on speed and control: Alphabet has said it wants to accelerate capacity, and ownership can bring relevant development capabilities closer to its data-center plans. The economics and reliability questions are harder to settle from the transaction alone. The acquisition does not establish that owning the platform is cheaper, nor does it guarantee round-the-clock clean power.
Risks and limits
- Execution: Permitting, construction, financing, supply chains, and grid interconnection can all delay projects.
- Community and regulatory pressure: Projects may face disputes over land, water, noise, emissions, local grid impacts, and tax incentives.
- Demand uncertainty: AI demand and model economics can shift faster than multi-year energy and data-center projects can be completed.
- Capital intensity: Large infrastructure commitments create fixed costs and depreciation. If AI or cloud revenue falls short, returns may be weaker than expected.
- Reliability: Solar and batteries alone may not meet continuous demand; grid imports, firm contracts, or dispatchable generation may remain necessary.
- Integration and accounting: Alphabet’s filing identifies Intersect as a variable-interest entity and says Alphabet is the primary beneficiary. Purchase accounting remains preliminary, so the reported allocation should not be treated as final.
The deal also does not guarantee Alphabet will build faster than Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, or other competitors. It strengthens one part of Alphabet’s infrastructure strategy, but constraints can shift from power development to chips, construction, transmission, water, or permitting.

What the acquisition signals
Alphabet’s Intersect acquisition is evidence of a major AI-infrastructure push, but the more precise takeaway is that power and physical deployment are becoming strategic assets in AI. The company is seeking to coordinate energy development and data-center capacity, rather than relying only on external suppliers and grid timelines. That may improve its ability to expand, but the transaction is a bet on faster, better-coordinated development—not proof that the capacity has already arrived or that the projects will be delivered on time, at expected cost, or with zero-carbon power.
