Short answer: You need permission to clone or imitate an identifiable singer’s voice, and a platform’s commercial-use wording does not automatically clear the underlying song, lyrics, sample, or performer rights. Keep proof of consent, use a plan that grants the needed license, disclose realistic synthetic vocals where a platform requires it, and check the service terms before release.
What Copyright Protects In An AI Vocal Track
The U.S. Copyright Office says material generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work can be protected. That separates two questions: whether your contribution can receive copyright protection, and whether you had permission to use someone else’s voice, composition, recording, or likeness. A commercial-use license from an AI service may cover its generated output while leaving the rights in a source recording, lyrics, melody, or recognizable person for you to clear.
Consent Comes Before Voice Cloning
For a real singer, obtain written permission that identifies the voice model, allowed uses, territory, duration, payment, attribution, and whether the permission can be sublicensed. Keep the recording or message that proves consent. Do not treat a celebrity-style prompt as consent, and do not upload another person’s vocal take unless you have permission to process it.

For your own voice, save the original recording and the date you authorized its use. A voice can still identify you after processing, so explain where the generated track will appear. If a service offers a library voice, read whether that voice is cleared for your intended release rather than assuming every tier has identical rights.

Consent And Release Notes For Each Workflow
Using Your Own Voice
Record a clean authorization such as: “I authorize [service] to generate vocals from this recording for my named project, including distribution on the platforms I select.” Store the source file, authorization, subscription tier, and export date. Suno, AI Song Cover, and Humlo describe workflows based on your own voice; verify retention, deletion, and reuse terms in each service’s current policy.

Using A Library Or Licensed Model
Eleven Music describes curated vocals and a partnership with artists, labels, and publishers. Kits AI says its voices are ethically licensed and securely sourced from artists. Those statements address the model source, while your plan still determines where you may use the output. Save the applicable terms and ask the vendor to clarify any use that is missing, such as film, television, games, or advertising.

Cloning Another Person
Tunee and CAVN AI describe voice-cloning features. Obtain the person’s explicit permission before uploading a reference or generating a performance in that voice. A “commercial use” label describes your license from the service; it does not prove that the individual consented or that a recognizable vocal identity is free of publicity or contract restrictions.
Making A Cover
AI Song Cover and Humlo describe workflows that use an existing track or YouTube link. A new AI vocal does not remove rights in the composition, lyrics, or original sound recording. Confirm whether you have permission for the recording and composition, and check the destination platform’s cover rules before monetizing.
A Practical Clearance Workflow
- Identify every input: voice recording, lyrics, melody, instrumental, sample, YouTube link, and artwork.
- Mark which inputs are yours, licensed, public-domain, or supplied by the service.
- Obtain written voice consent before cloning or imitating an identifiable person.
- Select a subscription tier whose terms cover your intended distribution and save a copy of those terms.
- Keep human contributions visible: write or substantially edit lyrics, melodies, arrangement, performance direction, or mixing decisions you made.
- Document the AI contribution for a copyright application when it is more than minimal, following the Copyright Office disclosure requirement.
- Review the upload platform’s synthetic-media and monetization rules before release.

Spotify announced that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist authorized it, and it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits. For an authorized self-voice project, write a prompt such as: “Use my consented voice recording for a 90-second original track; keep the vocal identity consistent, leave space for my human-written chorus, and export separate vocal and instrumental files if this plan supports those exports.”

For a cover workflow, write: “Use the authorized voice model on this track; preserve the original song’s structure, label the result as an AI cover, and do not publish until the composition and recording permissions are confirmed.” These prompts describe an approval process; they do not grant rights or establish that a specific service supports every requested export.
