AI-enabled collectibles are a real, early-stage idea: a smart base can identify a figure, listen to a question and play a character-specific reply. But that does not yet make them a proven market—or a sound investment. The key distinction for buyers is between owning a physical collectible and paying for an experience that may depend on an app, a cloud service and rights the owner does not control.
What “AI collectibles” means
The phrase can describe several different things: AI-generated designs, software used to price or authenticate collectibles, conversational figures, or accessories that add AI to existing figures. The recent consumer-product examples concern the last two. They do not show that major collectibles companies such as Funko or Nintendo have adopted AI, nor that AI is transforming the market as a whole.
At CES 2026, two startups showed contrasting versions of the idea. The Verge’s report described HeyMates, from Olli, as a new figure-and-stand system with RFID-equipped figure bases and distinct character personas. Planned characters included Albert Einstein, Zara and Chandler. Those details reflect the lineup reported at the time, not a guarantee of current availability.

Buddyo was presented as an AI-enabled stand for figures people already own, particularly Amiibo, with separate NFC-equipped bases planned for figures such as Funko Pops, bobbleheads and Labubus. Its app was reported to create a character profile from a photo and name and recognize some existing characters. Treat compatibility as a reported plan, not a promise that every model works today.

How the talking figure works
The simple version is a chain of components. An NFC or RFID tag identifies the figure to a smart base. A microphone captures speech; an app or connected service passes the request to an AI model; then a speaker plays a response in a selected character style. Lights, a screen or other visual effects can make the exchange feel more like a toy.
The tag is an identifier, not the intelligence itself. In a cloud-based design, the conversation can depend on an internet connection, a phone app, account access and continued service from the company or its AI providers. The Verge reported that Buddyo’s product description referred to a hybrid ChatGPT/Gemini stack, but that is a reported technical description, not a permanent specification. HeyMates was positioned as a more constrained, character-focused experience, while Buddyo was described as more assistant-like.
Why put AI in a collectible?
A character figure already carries meaning for a fan. Unlike a chatbot hidden behind a phone screen, it gives an otherwise invisible service a physical identity and a place on a shelf. An existing collection can also be an appealing starting point: a smart accessory may offer a new interaction without asking the collector to replace familiar figures.

That is the proposition, not proof of demand. A figure that tells a few jokes at a trade-show demo may be amusing. A product that people still choose to talk to months later has to offer distinctive, reliable interactions, not just a chatbot wearing a character’s name. The CES demonstrations included lighthearted prompts such as jokes; that makes repetition and novelty fade especially relevant questions.
Three products in one—and three sets of expectations
An AI figure combines a collectible, a toy and a connected service. Those categories are judged differently:
- Collectible: Buyers may care about design, scarcity, authenticity, licensing, condition and resale.
- Toy: Buyers expect play value, durability and age-appropriate behavior.
- AI companion: Buyers may expect good conversation, safety, privacy, responsive software and continuing support.
A purchase can meet one standard and fail another. A beautiful, limited figure might remain desirable as an object even if its software stops working; a clever AI experience might still be poor value if it requires a new fee or disappears when a company closes.

What gives an AI collectible lasting value?
Separate the value of the physical artifact from the utility of the connected service. A figure’s sculpt, materials, edition size, licensed character, artist, accessories and condition may matter to collectors independently of its chatbot. The software can add enjoyment, but it can also be updated, altered, restricted or discontinued by parties other than the figure’s owner.

Can the owner transfer it when reselling the figure? Can the AI still do anything offline? Will the company preserve the character if it shuts down? A limited physical edition may remain scarce, while the associated digital personality may be widely available—or become unavailable altogether. An interactive feature should not be assumed to increase a collectible’s resale value.
From a personal-finance perspective, treat a new AI collectible as discretionary spending, not an investment thesis. Do not pay a premium on the assumption that its connected features will appreciate, that servers will operate indefinitely or that a prototype’s novelty will translate into lasting demand.

The licensing question
The rights issue is sharper for an accessory that can assign a personality to an existing character. The Verge reported that Buddyo’s app could recognize some existing intellectual property and that community-provided voices could include voices resembling copyrighted characters. The company’s reported distinction—that users supplied those voices—does not settle whether a character, voice or generated dialogue is authorized.
Potential issues include trademarks, copyrighted material, a person’s voice or likeness, and the platform’s role in hosting user-created profiles. Before buying, ask whether the company has a license for the character and voice, who created the profile, whether the AI generates new dialogue or reproduces existing lines, how complaints are handled and whether a rights holder can remove a character. Owning a physical Amiibo or other figure does not by itself establish permission to make it speak through a third-party service.
Privacy and child safety are part of the purchase
A passive figure does not listen. A conversational base has a microphone, and its data practices matter even if the object looks like a toy. The available product coverage does not establish either company’s detailed audio-retention, model-training, parental-control or deletion policies. Do not assume that speech is either stored or discarded without checking current documentation.

Before placing one in a shared room—especially a child’s room—look for clear answers to these questions:
- Does the device listen only after activation, and is there a physical mute switch or clear recording indicator?
- Is audio processed locally or sent to a remote service? If sent, how long is it retained and who can access it?
- Are conversations used to train models, and can the owner opt out and delete stored data?
- Is an account required? Can a parent review or limit conversations?
- What safeguards apply to sexual, violent, manipulative or otherwise inappropriate prompts?
- How does the system avoid presenting invented claims as fact when speaking as a real person such as Einstein?
Questions to answer before spending
Neither a demo nor a product description resolves the practical terms of ownership. Before backing a campaign, preordering or paying retail, check the current official terms rather than relying on a reported launch date or planned feature.
- Total cost: What are the hardware price, shipping, subscription, paid character packs and replacement-part costs?
- Compatibility: Is your exact figure supported, and does it require an extra tag or base? A broad category claim is not a model-by-model compatibility list.
- Offline use: What works without Wi-Fi, an app or the company’s servers?
- Ownership and resale: Can the device be unlinked from one account and paired to another? Can the character or settings be transferred?
- Support: What warranty applies, how long are updates promised, and are replacement bases available?
- Collection integrity: Does setup require altering, sticking anything to or replacing part of a valuable figure?
- Rights and privacy: Are the character and voice licensed, and are data controls documented?
These are unanswered buyer questions in the available coverage, not reasons to assume the products lack a feature. They are also the information a buyer should have before treating a connected collectible like a normal retail figure. Crowdfunding adds delivery and fulfillment risk; backers should read campaign terms and refund conditions and should not treat a planned launch date as proof of shipment.
When AI adds value—and when it is a gimmick
The feature is more compelling if the character feels meaningfully different from a generic assistant, responses arrive reliably, several figures are easy to use, and the owner can control data and preserve useful functions. It is less compelling if conversations quickly become repetitive, a phone is needed for every interaction, basic use depends on an ongoing payment, or the experience vanishes without cloud access.
The risk is not only that the AI says something dull. It might give false historical information in a real person’s voice, change personality after a model update, lose compatibility with an older phone, or remain linked to a former owner after resale. An NFC tag can fail; a company can change its service or stop operating. The available reporting does not establish offline operation, subscription terms, transferability or shutdown protections for either product, so buyers should verify them directly.
Bottom line
AI is being tested as an interactive layer for selected physical collectibles, not as a proven replacement for the qualities collectors already value: design, scarcity, authenticity, cultural meaning and ownership. HeyMates represents a new character-and-hardware ecosystem; Buddyo represents the attempt to make existing figures conversational. Either could be enjoyable if the character experience is strong and the terms are clear. Until availability, costs, rights, privacy and long-term support are documented, buy for the object and experience you can verify—not for speculative future value.
