Ahold Delhaize USA Services reported that 2,242,521 people were affected by its November 2024 cybersecurity incident. The figure appears in a breach notification filed with the Maine attorney general on June 26, 2025.
That does not necessarily mean 2.24 million grocery customers were affected. The company said the relevant files primarily contained employment-related information involving current and former employees, along with some family members, dependents and beneficiaries.

The most defensible headline figure is 2,242,521 affected individuals, based on the state filing. It should not be described as 2,242,521 confirmed identity-theft victims: being included in a breach notice means information may have been involved, not that fraud occurred.

Ahold Delhaize said an unauthorized third party obtained files from an internal U.S. file repository between November 5 and November 6, 2024. The company publicly acknowledged a cybersecurity issue on November 8, 2024.

According to the company’s breach notice, Ahold Delhaize began an investigation with outside cybersecurity experts, coordinated with federal law enforcement and took steps to contain the incident. It later reviewed the affected files and began notifying people in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
The November operational disruption affecting some supermarket, pharmacy and e-commerce services should not be treated as identical to the later notification process. The incident occurred in November 2024; the large affected-person count became public in June 2025 after the company’s review of the files.
Which brands and people are connected to the incident?
Ahold Delhaize USA’s operations include Food Lion, Giant Food, The GIANT Company, Hannaford, Stop & Shop, ADUSA Distribution and ADUSA Transportation, as well as associated pharmacy and e-commerce operations. The breach filing, however, was made by Ahold Delhaize USA Services, LLC.

The company’s notice indicates that affected files concerned current and former employees of certain Ahold Delhaize USA companies, as well as their family members, dependents and beneficiaries. Independent reporting said the vast majority of affected people were current or former employees, although the public notices do not provide a complete breakdown between employees, relatives and customers.
Were 2.24 million grocery customers affected?
There is no evidence supporting that interpretation. The disclosed total is an affected-person count, not a confirmed count of shoppers or loyalty-program customers.
The company’s public notice emphasizes employment-related records. Some people may have been included even if they no longer worked for an Ahold Delhaize company, because former-worker records and information about relatives, dependents or beneficiaries could remain in the internal repository.

It is also too broad to say that no customer information was involved. The public filings do not provide a complete customer-versus-employee breakdown. The careful description is that the records were primarily employment-related, while the full categories of affected individuals have not been publicly itemized.

Ahold Delhaize said the affected files may have contained:
- Name
- Postal address
- Email address
- Telephone number
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
- Passport number
- Driver’s-license number
- Bank-account information
- Health or medical information in employment records
- Workers’ compensation information
- Other employment-related information
“May have contained” is important. The notice does not establish that every affected person had every listed category in the files, nor does it establish that every field was accessed or misused for every individual.

Why are some reports showing a different number?
Readers may encounter a separate figure of 4,037,575 “victim notices” in an Identity Theft Resource Center report. That number should not automatically replace the Maine filing’s figure or be described as 4 million unique people.
The two numbers may reflect different reporting bases or notice-counting methods, but the public sources do not fully reconcile them. The Maine filing is the clearest source for the reported affected-person count: 2,242,521 individuals.

How to determine whether you were affected
- Check your mail and email. Look for an official Ahold Delhaize USA Services breach notice. A notice is the best way to learn which information categories applied to you.
- Verify the contact details. Use the phone number, website and enrollment instructions printed in the notice or listed on the company’s official breach-information page. Do not rely on an unexpected message that asks you to click a link or pay a fee.
- Enroll in offered protection. Ahold Delhaize reportedly offered eligible affected people two years of credit monitoring and identity-protection services. Follow the official notice’s instructions and keep your enrollment confirmation.
- Review your credit reports. Get free reports through AnnualCreditReport.com, the official federally authorized site.
- Consider a credit freeze. If your Social Security number or identity-document information may have been involved, a freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion can help prevent new creditors from accessing your files. You can temporarily lift a freeze when applying for credit.
- Monitor financial accounts. Review bank and credit-card statements for unfamiliar activity. Contact financial institutions using the number on your card or statement, not a number supplied in a suspicious message.
What to do if you suspect identity theft
- Change passwords reused across email, financial and other important accounts.
- Turn on multifactor authentication wherever it is available.
- Check for unfamiliar accounts, credit inquiries or address changes.
- Report suspected identity theft and create a recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov.
- Keep the breach notice, monitoring enrollment confirmation and records of suspicious activity.
- Be cautious of follow-up phishing messages asking for a Social Security number, password, payment or verification fee.
A breach notice does not prove that identity theft occurred. It indicates that personal information may have been present in files obtained by an unauthorized party.
How should the incident be described?
The company’s own notices use cautious language: a cybersecurity issue involving unauthorized access to files. Some secondary reports described the event as a cyberattack or ransomware incident, and a threat group reportedly claimed responsibility. Unless supported by a primary source, it is more accurate to call it the November 2024 Ahold Delhaize USA cybersecurity incident or an unauthorized-access incident.
Similarly, “Social Security numbers were stolen” is too broad. The available notice supports saying that Social Security numbers may have been present in affected files. It does not say that every affected person’s Social Security number was accessed, published or used fraudulently.

What is the confirmed victim count?
As of the latest publicly identified information in the supplied filings and reports, Ahold Delhaize USA Services reported that 2,242,521 people were affected. The number should be understood as an affected-individual count tied to a state breach filing—not as a count of grocery customers, stolen Social Security numbers or confirmed identity-theft victims.
People who believe they may be included should rely on their individual notice, use the company’s official enrollment instructions and take free protective steps such as credit-report reviews, account monitoring and credit freezes.
