Adobe agreed to a proposed $150 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice on March 13, 2026, over allegations that it hid early-termination fees and made subscriptions difficult to cancel. The money is split: $75 million is a civil penalty payable to the government, and $75 million is the value of free Adobe services for customers who qualify. The public announcements do not promise a universal cash refund or yet spell out who qualifies.

The Justice Department described the agreement as a proposed stipulated order that would resolve the case if entered by the court. Adobe said it had finalized a settlement agreement and would proactively contact affected customers after the relevant court filings were accepted. Will Adobe customers receive cash refunds?
Not according to the terms described in the public DOJ and Adobe announcements. They identify a government penalty and free Adobe services for qualifying customers; they do not announce automatic refunds of early-termination fees, individual cash payments, or a general refund claim process. A customer benefit in the form of services is different from money returned to a bank account or card.
The announcements also do not provide a claim deadline, payment formula, or instructions for submitting a claim. Be wary of unofficial websites or unsolicited messages promising settlement money. Wait for communications from Adobe or an official government notice, and do not pay a third party to claim a benefit unless an official administrator is identified.

Who may qualify for free Adobe services?
The public announcements say that “customers that qualify” will receive free services and that Adobe plans to contact affected customers. They do not state the enrollment dates or clearly establish whether eligibility is limited to U.S. consumers, which plan types or former subscribers are covered, whether paying an early-termination fee is required, whether customers must file a claim, or whether the benefit can be transferred or redeemed for cash. Do not assume that having or having had any Adobe subscription is enough to qualify.
What the government alleged
The case grew out of an FTC investigation and a DOJ complaint filed on June 17, 2024, against Adobe and two executives. The FTC and DOJ alleged that Adobe used fine print and inconspicuous links to obscure important subscription terms, including the early-termination fee for its “annual, paid monthly” plan. They also alleged that the cancellation process involved unnecessary steps, delays, retention offers, and warnings that made it harder for consumers to leave. The FTC said the fee could amount to hundreds of dollars for some customers.

- Explain how that fee is calculated.
- Send advance reminders before certain free trials convert to paid subscriptions with an early-termination fee.
- Provide easy ways for subscribers to cancel.
The announced requirements address disclosure and cancellation design. They do not say that Adobe must eliminate annual commitments or may never charge an early-termination fee.
How Adobe’s annual-paid-monthly cancellation fee works
“Annual, paid monthly” means a yearly commitment paid in monthly installments; paying monthly does not make it a month-to-month plan. Under Adobe’s current U.S. subscription terms, cancelling this type of plan after the initial 14-day period can trigger a fee equal to 50% of the remaining contract balance. Adobe’s example is a cancellation in month nine: the fee is half the amount due for the remaining three months. The amount depends on the customer’s plan and contract. Adobe U.S. subscription terms

Plan types are not interchangeable

Adobe’s cited terms apply to U.S.-based subscribers; terms can differ by country, plan, business or education account, and billing channel. The same terms describe a general 14-day full-refund period for most plans, subject to exceptions and plan-specific terms.

- Sign in to your Adobe account and find the subscription.
- Select Manage plan, then Cancel your plan.
- Review the plan details and select Continue to cancel.
- Choose a cancellation reason and select Continue.
- Review the cancellation information and select Confirm cancellation.
- Check for Adobe’s confirmation email or verify the cancelled status in your account.
Adobe says each active plan must be cancelled separately. If a payment is processing or there is a payment problem, the online cancellation option may temporarily be unavailable; Adobe instructs customers to wait 24 hours and try again. For a plan bought through Apple, Google, Microsoft, or another seller, use that provider’s cancellation process. The account path can vary by product, region, billing channel, or account type. What happens to your account and files after cancellation?
Adobe says paid apps and services remain available through the end of the current billing period, and the Adobe account becomes a free membership. Creative Cloud storage is reduced to 5 GB. If your online files exceed that limit, Adobe gives you 30 days to reduce usage; after that, you may lose access to some or all files stored on Adobe’s servers. Files saved locally on your device remain accessible there. A charge after cancellation may be the final charge for the current billing period rather than a new renewal. What to do if you were charged an early-termination fee
- Save your signup confirmation, plan description, invoices, and any record showing the remaining commitment.
- Keep screenshots of the cancellation flow and the fee Adobe quoted.
- Record when and how you cancelled; retain the confirmation email and account-status page.
- Ask Adobe support for a written explanation of the fee calculation and the plan terms applied.
- If you believe the charge was unauthorized or conflicts with your contract, ask your card issuer or payment provider about its dispute process. Whether a dispute is appropriate depends on the facts and the issuer’s rules; an unexpected or unpopular fee is not automatically fraud.
The settlement announcements do not establish a universal right to a refund for every fee. Treat a disputed charge as an individual billing issue unless a formal court order or settlement notice provides broader relief.
