Yes—AdDuplex really shut down. The Windows-focused advertising and cross-promotion network stopped serving commercial advertising and cross-promotion on July 17, 2023, then closed its self-service client area on August 1, 2023. Its homepage now lists the service as operating from 2011 to 2023.
For developers, the shutdown meant replacing AdDuplex in app code, ad-rotation systems and monetization plans—not that every integrated app immediately stopped working.
What AdDuplex was
AdDuplex was a Windows-focused advertising network founded in 2011. It helped developers promote one another’s apps through reciprocal cross-promotion and also served commercial advertising when inventory was available. The service became especially familiar to Windows Phone, Windows Store and Windows app developers.

AdDuplex also published monthly Windows device-usage reports based on data from apps displaying its advertising. Those reports were useful indicators of trends, but they were not a census of every Windows PC or device. The sample depended on which apps integrated AdDuplex, their popularity, and their geographic and platform distribution. AdDuplex’s homepage records the service’s 2011–2023 operating period.

These were the company’s announced 2023 dates, not a current or future shutdown schedule. The original announcement is preserved on the AdDuplex blog.
Why did AdDuplex close?
Mendelevich attributed the decision to a shrinking Windows industry and developer community. He said AdDuplex had spent more than five years pursuing periodic technical and organizational changes to keep the business viable, but the company had run out of workable options.
That explanation is broader than saying Windows Phone’s decline alone caused the closure. The service operated across several parts of the Windows ecosystem, and the founder did not publish a detailed financial postmortem.

That was a separate event: AdDuplex was an independent third-party network, and its closure did not shut down the Microsoft Store or Windows app distribution. What happened to apps using the AdDuplex SDK?
The shutdown did not necessarily make every integrated app crash on July 17. AdDuplex said applications that handled its SDK’s NoAd event should follow the behavior defined in that handler. Apps without a custom handler would behave as they normally did when no advertisement was available.
Developers with their own ad-rotation systems could remove AdDuplex from the rotation. In practice, developers should also:
- Search the codebase for AdDuplex namespaces, packages, application IDs, ad controls and configuration values.
- Check whether the app has a custom
NoAdor no-fill handler. - Remove AdDuplex from ad-rotation logic.
- Hide, remove or redesign ad placements that no longer serve a useful purpose.
- Test offline behavior and normal no-ad behavior.
- Remove obsolete credentials, secrets, analytics events and reporting assumptions.
The amount of code required depended on the integration. The official notice described a no-ad fallback; it did not say that every app required a complete rewrite.

What advertisers and customers needed to do
Commercial advertising and developer cross-promotion were different parts of the service. Paid advertisers could no longer rely on AdDuplex commercial inventory after the July 17 cutoff, while developers lost the reciprocal promotion network at the same time.

AdDuplex advised customers to download statistics, invoices and other information from the self-service client area before it closed. In 2026, developers should not assume the old portal, balances or account records remain accessible. Anyone who failed to export records can try the historical contact address in the shutdown announcement, but support or account recovery should not be presumed.
The available announcement does not establish a universal refund policy, final balance policy or claim that all developers lost money. Those points require account-specific evidence.
What happened to the monthly Windows usage reports?
AdDuplex’s reports disappeared because the advertising network that supplied their data ended. The reports were widely cited partly because independent Windows usage data was limited, and they offered useful glimpses into trends such as Windows 11 adoption.

- Which apps integrated AdDuplex;
- The relative popularity of those apps;
- Regional differences in participation;
- Platform and app-type bias; and
- Changes in the developer base over time.
That limitation did not make the reports useless. It means their numbers described the AdDuplex-connected sample rather than every Windows user. OnMSFT’s coverage made the same distinction.

Microsoft Store commerce
The Microsoft Store can support paid apps and games, trials, add-ons and in-app purchases, depending on the product and commerce model. Microsoft’s current publishing documentation states that developers using Microsoft commerce pay 12% for games and 15% for apps. It also describes a model in which eligible non-gaming apps use their own commerce system and retain 100% of revenue, subject to applicable Store rules.
This is generally a better fit for paid utilities, productivity software, premium upgrades and subscriptions than display advertising. It does not, however, replace AdDuplex’s reciprocal discovery network. Review Microsoft’s publishing guidance and confirm current fees, eligibility and regional rules before making a decision. Microsoft also announced in May 2026 that company registration for Store publishing had become free; onboarding requirements should still be checked directly.
Third-party advertising SDKs
Microsoft’s January 2026 Windows game-monetization documentation names Vungle, Rise by Unity and Pubfinity as examples of third-party providers with SDKs for displaying ads in games. That list is a starting point, not proof that any provider is a drop-in replacement for every AdDuplex integration.

Before choosing a provider, verify support for the exact framework and distribution model: native Win32, UWP, Unity, ARM64, MSIX and the intended Store or sideloading route. Also check minimum traffic, geography, ad formats, privacy requirements, approval, payment terms and fill rates. A mobile-focused SDK may not support a conventional Windows desktop utility.
Unity’s monetization products, including Unity Ads and LevelPlay, may be relevant to Unity-based games, but their public material is principally oriented toward game and mobile monetization. They should not be presented as a universal Windows desktop replacement.
Direct licensing and billing
For specialist utilities and professional software, direct commerce may be more sustainable than advertising. Options include one-time licenses, freemium upgrades, subscriptions, enterprise seats, donations and sponsorships.

The trade-offs include billing integration, tax handling, refunds, entitlement verification, subscription management and customer support.
Replacing cross-promotion
AdDuplex’s reciprocal discovery function is harder to replace than its ad-serving function. Developers can pursue partnerships with complementary apps, newsletter swaps, community promotion, product bundles, referral agreements and Store merchandising. These approaches are more manual and relationship-driven than an exchange network, but they can be better targeted.

A practical migration decision
- Choose the revenue objective. Decide whether the priority is advertising income, paid conversion, recurring revenue or user acquisition.
- Match the model to the product. A professional utility may suit direct licensing; a high-engagement game may justify advertising; a premium app may fit Store commerce.
- Measure the existing economics. Use historical AdDuplex records if available, but distinguish impressions, fill, revenue and discovery effects.
- Test compatibility before committing. Confirm framework, architecture, packaging, privacy and distribution support with the provider.
- Keep a no-ad path. The app should remain usable when an ad provider has no fill, is offline or becomes unavailable.
- Separate monetization from discovery. A billing replacement will not automatically replace cross-promotion, and an ad SDK will not automatically replace historical reporting.
Common misconceptions
- “AdDuplex might shut down.” It did; the service ended in 2023.
- “Microsoft replaced AdDuplex.” Microsoft Store commerce and third-party providers are alternatives, not a Microsoft-announced AdDuplex replacement.
- “Every integrated app broke.” The documented behavior was a no-ad response, with results depending on each app’s fallback handling.
- “The reports measured all Windows devices.” They represented a participating-app sample.
- “Windows app distribution ended.” AdDuplex’s closure did not close the Microsoft Store or end Windows development.
- “Any listed ad network will work.” Provider compatibility must be checked for the app’s framework, architecture and distribution method.
