Solos Technology Limited has sued Meta and its eyewear partners, alleging that Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta smart glasses infringe five U.S. patents. The complaint, filed on January 23, 2026, seeks damages that Solos says could reach multiple billions of dollars, enhanced damages, legal fees, and an injunction that could restrict sales. But no court has found Meta liable, and the lawsuit does not by itself trigger a recall, sales ban, or shutdown of existing glasses.
The case is Solos Technology Limited v. Meta Platforms, Inc. et al., No. 1:26-cv-10304, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Who is suing whom?
The plaintiff is Solos Technology Limited, a smart-glasses company. The defendants are:

The case was assigned to Judge Allison D. Burroughs after an early reassignment. The inclusion of Oakley, Luxottica, and EssilorLuxottica is significant because the products are collaborations between Meta and major eyewear businesses, rather than a Meta-only hardware project. The parties and court information appear in the filed complaint.

What Solos alleges Meta copied
It is more precise to say that Solos alleges patent infringement—not that Meta has been proven to have copied its technology. The patents concern implementations of smart-eyewear systems, including:
- Open-ear and head-worn audio;
- Acoustic components integrated into an eyeglass frame;
- Microphones, speakers, processing hardware, and acoustic chambers;
- Beamforming and directional sound;
- Audio projection toward the wearer; and
- Sensors and contextual or user-assistance functions.
In plain English, the dispute is about how smart glasses capture and process sound, direct audio toward the wearer, use sensors, and fit those components into a wearable frame. It is not a claim that Solos owns the general idea of smart glasses or every pair of camera-equipped eyewear.

Which products are named?
The complaint identifies products sold under both the Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta brands. Naming a product in a complaint does not mean a court has determined that it infringes a patent.

- Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 1;
- Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 2;
- Ray-Ban Meta Skyler Gen 2;
- Ray-Ban Meta Headliner Gen 2; and
- Ray-Ban Meta Display.
Oakley products
- Oakley Meta HSTN.
The complaint also uses broader language covering variants, derivatives, updates, successor products, and substantially similar implementations. That does not create a final product-by-product infringement map. Patent infringement is claim-specific: the court would need to determine whether particular products practice every required limitation of one or more asserted patent claims.
What Solos wants from the court
Solos seeks:
- Compensatory damages;
- Enhanced damages based on its allegation that the infringement was willful;
- Attorneys’ fees and litigation costs;
- Injunctive relief, including a possible permanent injunction; and
- A jury trial.
Public coverage and the complaint describe Solos’s damages theory as potentially involving multiple billions of dollars. That is a demand or allegation by the plaintiff, not a likely payout or an amount awarded by a judge or jury. Any damages would depend on issues such as patent validity, infringement, the applicable royalty or lost-profit theory, and the evidence developed in the case.
Why Solos says it sued now
Solos’s account describes a chronology stretching back years. It points to earlier Solos work and patent filings, contacts or demonstrations involving Oakley and EssilorLuxottica personnel, Meta’s launch of Ray-Ban Stories in 2021, and later Ray-Ban Meta product generations.

The complaint presents those events as evidence that the defendants knew about Solos’s technology before or during product development. That is Solos’s litigation position, not an independently established finding that Meta copied the inventions or acted unlawfully.
What the court has decided so far
On April 6, 2026, Judge Burroughs denied Solos’s motion to disqualify Morgan Lewis & Bockius from representing Oakley, Luxottica of America, and EssilorLuxottica USA. The order addressed an attorney-conflict issue.
It did not decide whether:
- Solos’s patents are valid;
- Meta or the other defendants infringed them;
- Any infringement was willful;
- Solos is entitled to damages; or
- Any product must be redesigned or withdrawn.
That distinction matters. A procedural ruling about which lawyers may represent a party is not a ruling on the underlying patent dispute.
Could the lawsuit stop sales?
Potentially, but not immediately or automatically. Solos requested injunctive relief, yet filing a complaint does not halt sales. Any injunction would require additional court action and would depend on the applicable legal standards and findings.

Several outcomes remain possible, including dismissal of some claims, narrowing of the patent claims, challenges to patent validity, a finding of non-infringement, licensing, settlement, product redesign, software or feature changes, continued sales during litigation, or a trial followed by an appeal. Even an infringement finding would not necessarily mean that every accused product disappears from stores.

Owners should not treat the lawsuit as a recall notice. Unless a later court order says otherwise, the filing does not:
- Declare existing Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta glasses illegal;
- Cancel warranties;
- Stop app or software support;
- Disable devices; or
- Require consumers to return their glasses.
The case could eventually affect future products, licensing arrangements, software features, hardware design, or availability. Those consequences are speculative at this stage. Owners should use official support channels for product problems rather than assuming the patent case changes their consumer rights.

What shoppers should consider
The lawsuit alone is not evidence that Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta glasses are unsafe or that buying them is legally preferable—or legally riskier—than buying another product. Shoppers should evaluate the products on ordinary practical grounds:
- Platform dependence: camera, audio, and AI functions may depend on Meta’s software and account ecosystem.
- Privacy: consider how you feel about wearing glasses with cameras and microphones around other people.
- Use case: these are camera-and-audio wearables, not necessarily display-based augmented-reality glasses with visual overlays.
- Compatibility and support: check current phone, app, prescription-lens, warranty, and regional-availability details on the official Ray-Ban Meta page or Oakley’s website.
Solos products can be reviewed separately through Solos’s official site, but the existence of this lawsuit does not establish that Solos has exclusive ownership of the broader smart-glasses category or eliminate legal uncertainty for every competing product.
What happens next?
The defendants may answer the complaint or bring motions challenging the claims. The case could then involve technical discovery, claim construction, patent-validity challenges, expert evidence, settlement discussions, and potentially a trial. The parties could also resolve the dispute through a license or redesign without a public admission of infringement.
For now, the defensible conclusion is limited: Solos has made a substantial patent claim against Meta and its eyewear partners, and the complaint puts several Ray-Ban and Oakley smart-glasses products at issue. The court has not yet established that Meta infringed Solos’s patents, that Solos will receive billions, or that consumers must stop buying or using the glasses.
