A reported Reddit incident described a buyer opening a supposedly new 1TB SSD and finding roughly 800GB of existing files, including Native Instruments’ Kontakt and Reaktor software. The story was published by Indian Defence Review on April 11, 2025.
The files may have represented thousands of dollars in replacement software costs, but that does not mean they had equivalent resale value—or that the buyer legally owned them. More importantly, the drive may have exposed another person’s private data or contained unsafe files. The original Reddit post, retailer, order records and any forensic examination were not independently established in the available coverage, so this should be treated as a reported incident, not proof that a particular seller knowingly resold customer data.
What reportedly happened
According to the published report, a buyer believed he had purchased a new 1TB SSD. Before formatting it, he inspected the drive and found approximately 800GB of files already present. The collection reportedly included Kontakt and Reaktor, professional music-production tools associated with Native Instruments, along with related software and content.

That matters because the most important details—whether the product was actually sold as new, who handled it before sale and whether the files were genuine—remain unconfirmed.

“800GB” should also be understood as an approximate figure, not a forensic measurement. The report’s description establishes an unusual discovery, but not exactly what every file was, who created it or whether it was usable.
Why the files might appear to be worth thousands
Professional music software can be expensive when measured by replacement retail value. A collection may include sampler platforms, synthesizers, effects, sample libraries and project assets purchased over many years. Replacing comparable products legitimately could cost thousands of dollars, depending on the editions and libraries involved.
That is different from the original owner’s purchase price and very different from resale value:
- Replacement retail value: what equivalent products might cost when bought legitimately today.
- Original purchase price: what the owner actually paid, potentially after discounts, upgrades or bundles.
- Resale value: what can lawfully be transferred, which may be little or nothing if licenses are account-bound or non-transferable.
The report did not provide an itemized inventory, license documentation or a current valuation. Therefore, “worth thousands” is best treated as an estimate of possible replacement cost, not a verified appraisal or a financial windfall.
Finding application folders, installers or sample files also does not transfer ownership. A legitimate installation may require the original purchaser’s account, activation credentials, serial number or continuing license rights. Copying, activating, selling or distributing the contents could create copyright, contract or fraud issues, depending on the jurisdiction and the applicable license terms.

How could a supposedly new drive contain old data?
No single explanation was proven. The most plausible possibilities include:
Returned merchandise
The drive may have been previously purchased, returned and restocked without being properly wiped or relabeled as used, open-box or refurbished. This is the leading theory described in the coverage, but there is no identified retailer investigation confirming it.

Marketplace or fulfillment error
A third-party marketplace seller, warehouse or fulfillment provider may have shipped the wrong unit or inaccurately described its condition. The distinction matters because the seller, marketplace, manufacturer and fulfillment company may have different responsibilities.
Incomplete refurbishment or quality-control failure
A drive can function normally while still retaining recoverable data. “It works” does not mean “factory fresh,” and a quick format is not necessarily the same as secure sanitization.
Malware bait or tampering
The possibility of deliberately planted files has also been raised. Valuable-looking software could encourage someone to open an installer or executable. However, the available coverage provides no evidence that malware was present on this particular drive. It is a security hypothesis, not an established fact.

Factory-origin files
Manufacturers may use test files, diagnostic artifacts or recovery partitions. But a large personal music-production collection would be more consistent with prior user, reseller or refurbisher handling than with ordinary factory testing. That is an inference, not a forensic conclusion.

A used drive can expose much more than music applications. Depending on how it was used, it might contain personal documents, tax records, photographs, browser artifacts, account tokens, credentials, client projects, business information or identifying metadata.
For the previous owner, this can become a serious privacy or data-security incident. For the new buyer, opening and retaining those files can create security, ethical and potentially legal problems. The story should not be treated as a lucky software bargain.
What to do if a new drive arrives with files on it
- Do not open or execute the files. Avoid installers, programs, scripts, documents and media that you did not create.
- Disconnect the drive from the internet-connected computer. Do not allow cloud backup, indexing or synchronization services to upload its contents.
- Do not log into accounts or activate software found on the drive. Possession of files does not grant license rights.
- Document the condition. Photograph the packaging, labels, serial number, seller information and visible storage details without unnecessarily browsing the files.
- Contact the seller and marketplace before erasing anything. Request a refund or replacement because the product was not supplied in the expected condition.
- Preserve evidence if necessary. Keep the drive unchanged if you may need it for a return dispute, fraud complaint or professional examination.
- Do not copy, share or upload another person’s data. If the files appear confidential, illegal or personally identifying, ask the seller, platform or a qualified professional how to return or dispose of the drive.
If you only want a refund, preserve the packaging and purchase records and follow the platform’s return process. If the seller asks you to format the drive, obtain that instruction in writing. Do not return personal copies of the discovered files.
If you already opened something
Mounting a drive does not by itself prove that a computer was infected. The risk is higher if you executed a program, installer or script, enabled macros, entered credentials or allowed unknown software to make system changes.

If that happened, disconnect the drive, run a security check from a trusted and updated environment, change potentially exposed passwords and review important accounts for suspicious activity. If business, financial or confidential data was involved, consult an incident-response or digital-forensics professional.
When and how should the drive be erased?
Do not erase the drive until you decide whether it must be preserved for a refund, fraud complaint or forensic review. Formatting can destroy useful evidence, and ordinary formatting is not the same as secure sanitization.
The correct method depends on the storage technology:
- Magnetic HDD: a full overwrite may be suitable for many ordinary consumer situations.
- SATA SSD: repeated overwriting is not ideal because wear-leveling can leave some blocks untouched. A manufacturer-supported secure-erase process is generally preferable.
- NVMe SSD: use an appropriate NVMe sanitize or equivalent manufacturer-supported function when available.
- USB external drive: the enclosure may prevent some hardware erase commands, so compatibility must be checked before proceeding.
Western Digital’s data-protection guidance distinguishes ATA Security Erase, SCSI Sanitize and NVMe Sanitize methods. Its SSD Dashboard documentation describes Secure Erase and warns users to select the correct drive. Samsung’s Magician utility provides diagnostics and Secure Erase features for supported Samsung SSDs.

Never select a disk for erasure unless you have verified its model and serial number.

What if the drive was refurbished or open-box?
Existing use is less surprising if the listing clearly said refurbished, open-box or used. Even then, the drive should normally be supplied without the previous owner’s data. A listing’s condition also affects the buyer’s refund rights and the seller’s obligations, so save the original description and photographs.
Do not assume a suspicious drive is counterfeit, either. A cheap or inaccurate listing may involve falsified capacity or altered firmware, but the available incident report does not establish that. For a suspected counterfeit, verify the model, serial number, reported capacity, health information, sustained write behavior and manufacturer warranty status.
What this means for your money
The financial lesson is straightforward: an unexpected collection of files is not an asset you should value as a resale opportunity. Its legitimate replacement cost may be high, while its lawful resale value may be zero. Trying to monetize it could expose you to licensing, copyright, privacy and malware risks.
Your practical financial objective should be a refund or replacement. Keep the receipt, listing, packaging, serial number and correspondence. If the seller refuses to resolve the issue, the documentation may support a marketplace dispute or payment dispute, subject to the applicable terms and deadlines.
Professional recovery or forensic work can be expensive. Western Digital says standard Ontrack recoveries have ranged approximately from $1,000 to $2,000 based on 2022 data, with actual costs varying by device, failure and service level. That is not a current universal quote and would rarely be justified merely to explore unwanted files. It may be relevant when preserving evidence or recovering data that genuinely belongs to you.
What buyers should check in the future
- Confirm whether the listing says new, open-box, refurbished or used.
- Buy from a reputable seller and retain the listing and invoice.
- Inspect packaging, seals, labels and serial numbers before connecting the device.
- Check the drive’s reported capacity and health using trusted manufacturer tools.
- Do not assume that a working drive is unused or properly sanitized.
- Do not routinely erase every new drive before use; first verify its condition and preserve evidence if something is wrong.
Western Digital’s former WD Security software reached end of support after July 31, 2025, so avoid relying on outdated instructions and use current manufacturer documentation for compatible products.
Bottom line
The reported discovery is plausible but not independently proven. The drive may have been returned, mishandled or incorrectly classified, but there is no available evidence that a retailer knowingly sold stolen data or that malware was present. The “thousands of dollars” claim refers, at most, to possible replacement value—not guaranteed resale value or transferable ownership.
