Xiaomi began in 2010 as a software start-up, not a phone manufacturer. Its early combination of MIUI software, online sales, user feedback and aggressively priced smartphones helped it grow quickly in China and expand overseas. Today, the company spans phones, connected devices and electric vehicles—but its challenge is no longer just winning customers with value: it must also sustain margins, build premium-brand credibility and manage the demands of making cars.
Why Xiaomi started
When Xiaomi was founded in April 2010, smartphones were becoming mass-market products. Android gave new companies a way to customize the smartphone experience without building an operating system from scratch, while online retail offered an alternative to relying entirely on physical stores, carrier deals and large advertising budgets.
That created an opportunity to sell capable devices at accessible prices. Xiaomi did not invent affordable smartphones, direct online sales or community marketing. Its distinctive move was to combine those approaches with software development and a growing range of connected products.

Founder Lei Jun was a technology entrepreneur and former Kingsoft executive. Lin Bin, an early president and co-founder, and other members of the founding group brought engineering and software experience. Xiaomi’s founding story is therefore broader than one entrepreneur: the team’s choices about software, distribution and customer involvement shaped the business from the start. Xiaomi’s account of its founding team is available on its founder page.

MIUI came before the phone
Xiaomi’s first major product was MIUI, an Android-based interface and software layer. It was not a wholly independent mobile operating system like iOS. Starting with software let Xiaomi build a product and a relationship with technically engaged users before it made a phone.
Early users could try the software and share feedback, giving Xiaomi a community as well as a way to refine the interface. That approach helped establish a habit that outlasted the first version of MIUI: treating software, ongoing user engagement and hardware as connected parts of the customer experience. Xiaomi later introduced HyperOS as a newer platform intended to connect more kinds of devices. The company describes this software evolution and its cross-device strategy in its 2023 annual report.
The Mi 1 and Xiaomi’s online playbook
Xiaomi announced the Mi 1, its first smartphone, in August 2011. The phone brought the company’s software-first approach into hardware: it aimed to offer high-end specifications at a lower price than established premium brands, while MIUI and Xiaomi’s community helped give buyers a reason to pay attention.
Recommended Free Tools
Xiaomi’s early online-led sales model reduced reliance on traditional retail and let the company communicate directly with customers. Limited batches could generate urgency and publicity, but scarcity also reflected practical constraints: a young company had to manage inventory, manufacturing capacity and cash. When demand exceeded supply, the same approach that created buzz could leave would-be buyers waiting.
Direct sales also gave Xiaomi a closer view of customer interest, while user discussions supplied feedback and helped spread awareness. But a vocal enthusiast community is not a representative sample of every buyer. Feedback can help identify problems and desired features; it cannot, on its own, establish what the wider market wants.
From fast growth in China to a foothold in India
Xiaomi’s early growth was rapid. The company’s 2018 listing document records annual sales above US$1 billion in 2012. In 2014, it said it had become China’s leading smartphone company by shipments, citing IDC; the document also reported annual sales above US$10 billion, citing iResearch. These are dated milestones, not claims about Xiaomi’s position today.

The company’s software audience and overseas growth added to that momentum. Xiaomi reported that MIUI had more than 100 million monthly active users in 2015. In India, it reported the number-one smartphone position by unit shipments in the fourth quarter of 2017, with a 26.8% shipment share, citing IDC. Those figures describe a specific historical quarter, not continuous leadership.
India showed that Xiaomi’s value proposition could travel beyond China. The company used affordable phones, online sales and local partnerships, later adding physical retail. It remains an important market, but the story has not been an uninterrupted upward line: Xiaomi said lower shipments in India contributed to its 2025 smartphone decline, while mainland China, Latin America and Africa helped offset it. Xiaomi’s historical milestones are recorded in its 2018 listing document; the later regional context appears in its 2025 earnings release.
How Xiaomi’s model differed
Xiaomi’s early approach was not simply “sell cheap phones.” It linked pricing, software, sales channels and customer engagement, then used phones to introduce customers to a broader product range.
| Part of the model | What Xiaomi did | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Software | Built MIUI and cultivated a user community before launching its first phone. | Established a software identity and a channel for feedback. |
| Distribution | Started with online-led, direct sales rather than depending on a conventional retail footprint. | Reduced some channel dependence and brought the company closer to customers. |
| Hardware value | Emphasized specifications and design relative to price. | Gave buyers a clear reason to consider a new brand. |
| Community | Invited early adopters to discuss products and software. | Helped with iteration and word-of-mouth, though enthusiasts did not represent all customers. |
| Ecosystem | Expanded into connected devices and services beyond phones. | Created more customer touchpoints and cross-selling opportunities. |
Compared with Apple’s more tightly controlled premium ecosystem and Samsung’s established hardware and channel presence, Xiaomi built its identity around online engagement, strong perceived value and a broad portfolio. The contrast is not absolute: all three companies sell across channels and product tiers. Xiaomi’s distinction was how centrally it made value pricing, community and ecosystem breadth part of its public identity.
From phones to a connected-device ecosystem
Xiaomi expanded into televisions, routers, wearables, lighting, air purifiers, appliances and other connected products. A phone could serve as the control point for those devices, while the Xiaomi Home app and account helped connect products in a customer’s household.

The scale is substantial, but the measures need context. Xiaomi’s 2023 annual report counted 739.7 million connected AIoT devices at year-end. Its company profile reports more than 1.079 billion connected AIoT devices as of 2025, excluding smartphones, tablets and laptops. These are company-reported connected-device totals, not counts of active users. Xiaomi also reports that its products are sold in more than 100 countries and regions; availability, features and support can differ by market.
The 2018 IPO and the move upmarket
Xiaomi listed in Hong Kong on July 9, 2018. The listing marked a transition from a fast-growing challenger to a public multinational expected to report on performance, profitability and risk across several businesses. It did not end the company’s need to adapt: the smartphone market was increasingly competitive, and growth could not depend indefinitely on adding low-priced phones.
Moving into premium smartphones was one response. Higher-end devices give Xiaomi a chance to improve its brand perception and average selling prices, using flagship features, design and camera partnerships to compete for customers who might otherwise consider Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Vivo or Oppo. But a value-oriented reputation can be difficult to move upscale, and premium buyers expect a polished experience, dependable support and a strong brand as well as specifications.

The financial figures illustrate why shipment growth and business strength are not the same thing. Xiaomi reported 168.5 million smartphone shipments and RMB191.8 billion in smartphone revenue in 2024. In 2025, shipments declined to 165.2 million, and smartphone gross margin fell from 12.6% in 2024 to 10.9% in 2025. Those are company-reported annual figures; they show that high volume does not remove pressure on phone economics.

MIUI was Xiaomi’s long-running Android-based interface and software layer. HyperOS is the newer platform associated with the company’s effort to make phones, tablets, appliances, cars and other devices work within a more connected environment. In October 2023, Xiaomi announced its “Human × Car × Home” strategy, linking personal devices, smart-home products and vehicles.
The strategic aim is to make a Xiaomi phone more than a standalone purchase: it can be one point of access to other devices and services. That vision depends on practical details, though. Software versions, Google-service availability, features, update schedules and device compatibility can differ by model and region, so a global platform strategy does not mean every customer receives an identical experience.

Why Xiaomi entered electric cars
A car is a large, software-rich device that can connect with a driver’s phone and home. Xiaomi’s existing experience with consumer hardware, software interfaces and connected services gives it a strategic reason to enter the category. The company can try to distinguish its vehicles through design and integration with its device ecosystem.
Xiaomi launched its SU7 sedan in March 2024 and reported 136,854 vehicle deliveries that year. Deliveries rose to 411,082 in 2025. The company reported RMB103.3 billion in 2025 smart-EV revenue; its broader smart-EV, AI and other new-initiatives category reached RMB106.1 billion. These figures show a fast-growing business, not by themselves lasting profitability or proof that Xiaomi has mastered the responsibilities of an established automaker. Vehicle manufacturing brings demanding requirements in safety, regulation, production, service networks and capital. Xiaomi’s SU7 launch is described in its 2024 results announcement, and its later figures appear in the 2025 earnings release.
What explains Xiaomi’s rise—and what could constrain it
No single element accounts for Xiaomi’s growth. Its advantage came from connecting several: MIUI gave the company a software foothold; online sales supported a direct relationship with customers; value-oriented hardware attracted buyers; community participation helped generate feedback and attention; and an ecosystem of devices extended the relationship beyond the phone.
- Scale and reach: Xiaomi has a large smartphone business and an extensive connected-device portfolio, giving it many ways to meet customers.
- More demanding competition: Premium phones put the company against brands with strong reputations, while value pricing can limit room to absorb costs.
- Integration and support: A wider product range creates more compatibility, software and after-sales responsibilities.
- Regional differences: A successful approach in one country does not guarantee the same sales or competitive position elsewhere.
- Automotive execution: Deliveries are only one measure of an EV business; safety, quality, service, production economics and sustained demand also matter.
Xiaomi’s current profile says the company ranked among the global top three smartphone vendors by shipments in 2025, attributing that ranking to Omdia. That is a shipment ranking, not a measure of profit or customer satisfaction. Its trajectory is best understood as an effort to preserve the reach of a value-oriented phone maker while building businesses in which software integration, brand trust, service and economics matter increasingly.
What Xiaomi’s history means
Xiaomi’s defining achievement was not inventing cheap smartphones. It was organizing a consumer-electronics company to act partly like an internet platform: software and community came early, direct online sales helped shape its relationship with buyers, and phones became gateways to a growing ecosystem. The company is now testing whether that approach can stretch from phones and home devices into premium products and cars, where scale alone is not enough.
