Yes, a Mac can mine cryptocurrency—but it is usually better viewed as a learning project than a dependable way to make money. Bitcoin is not a realistic target for Mac hardware. For a beginner who already owns a reasonably ventilated Mac, Monero is the most practical example because its RandomX proof-of-work algorithm is designed to resist ASICs and favors CPU mining. The first step, however, is to calculate electricity cost and decide whether sustained heat, noise, storage use, and hardware wear are worth the experiment.

What cryptocurrency mining does

Mining is the process of performing computational work for a proof-of-work cryptocurrency. Mining software receives work from the network or a mining pool and submits solutions. A successful solo miner—or a pool whose members collectively find a block—can receive the cryptocurrency’s block reward and transaction fees under that network’s rules.

Mining is not the same as staking, lending, yield farming, or buying cryptocurrency. Only proof-of-work cryptocurrencies can be mined in the traditional sense. Bitcoin and Monero use proof of work; Ethereum no longer uses proof-of-work mining.

Can a Mac mine Bitcoin?

Technically, a Mac can run Bitcoin-mining software. Economically, it is not competitive. Bitcoin mining is dominated by specialized application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) hardware built for that single task. A Mac’s CPU or integrated graphics hardware is several categories below purpose-built Bitcoin miners.

Running Bitcoin software on a Mac may help explain how mining works, but it should not be treated as commercial mining. Be particularly skeptical of cloud-mining contracts and offers promising guaranteed returns. They sell a financial promise, not a realistic shortcut around mining economics.

Why Monero is the practical Mac example

Monero uses the RandomX proof-of-work algorithm. RandomX is ASIC-resistant, and the Monero Project says CPU mining is more efficient than GPU mining for RandomX. That makes Monero a more sensible educational target than Bitcoin for a Mac, although it does not make mining automatically profitable or make Monero a recommended investment.

Monero supports three broad approaches:

Method Best for Main drawback
Solo mining Learning and maximum independence Rewards are irregular; a small Mac may wait a long time to find a block
Conventional pool More predictable small payouts Pool fees, payout rules, and greater centralization
P2Pool Decentralized pooled mining More technical setup and synchronization requirements

See the Monero mining overview and Monero’s mining documentation for current network and payout details.

Is your Mac suitable?

  • MacBook Air: Suitable for short experiments, but passive cooling and sustained CPU load make it a poor continuous miner.
  • MacBook Pro: Can be tested, but expect sustained heat, fan noise, battery concerns, and reduced convenience.
  • Mac mini: A reasonable low-power experiment if you already own one and provide adequate ventilation.
  • iMac: Technically possible, although display-related power consumption complicates the economics.
  • Mac Studio: Capable of experimentation, but buying one solely for mining is difficult to justify.
  • Older Intel Mac: Software may run, but efficiency and thermal performance can be poor.
  • Apple-silicon Mac: Usable for experimentation, but macOS-specific RandomX limitations affect performance.

Intel Macs need the macos-x64 XMRig build. Apple-silicon Macs need macos-arm64. XMRig supports Apple M1 processors from version 6.7.0 onward. Its documentation notes that Apple-silicon macOS lacks huge-page support and CPU-affinity support for this workload, while RandomX JIT runs in a slower secure mode because of macOS hardened-runtime constraints. These are performance limitations, not evidence that mining cannot work.

Calculate electricity cost before mining

Gross coin rewards are not profit. Start with measured wall power if possible, using a plug-in power meter:

Electricity cost per day = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × electricity price per kWh

For continuous operation:

Daily cost = (P ÷ 1,000) × 24 × E

P is measured wall power in watts and E is your local electricity rate. A more complete monthly estimate is:

Monthly net = estimated coin revenue − electricity − pool fees − payout or transaction costs

Software-reported processor power may omit the display, charger, networking, and other system consumption. Also remember that total return on investment includes the Mac’s purchase price and opportunity cost. Network difficulty, hashrate, the XMR price, block reward, miner version, pool fee, and your actual power draw all change over time. Monero’s tail emission is designed to remain at 0.3 XMR per minute, or 0.6 XMR per two-minute block, but the value and probability of receiving rewards remain variable. Do not rely on an undated “dollars per day” estimate.

Prepare a Monero wallet safely

  1. Download the official Monero GUI or CLI software.
  2. Verify the download using the project’s published verification procedure.
  3. Create or restore a wallet.
  4. Write the recovery seed on paper or another secure offline medium. Never share it.
  5. Use the wallet’s primary address for solo XMRig mining. Monero’s documentation says subaddresses and integrated addresses are not supported for this use.
  6. Synchronize a Monero node before attempting solo mining.

The Monero GUI workflow currently documents at least 100 GiB of free space. Storage requirements change: Monero’s technical documentation reported approximately 100 GiB for a pruned node and approximately 250 GiB for a full node as of January 20, 2026. Check the current documentation before installing.

Beginner setup: Monero GUI

The GUI is the least intimidating route because it combines the wallet, node, and mining controls.

  1. Download and verify the official Monero GUI.
  2. Create or restore your wallet and secure the seed.
  3. Wait for the node to synchronize.
  4. Open the Advanced tab.
  5. Open Mining.
  6. Choose Solo mining, or P2Pool if your GUI version and setup support it.
  7. Select a conservative number of mining threads.
  8. Click Start mining.

Use Activity Monitor to confirm that the Monero process is consuming CPU resources. The GUI is easier to use, but XMRig may deliver a higher hashrate. A solo wallet balance will not increase simply because mining has started: solo rewards arrive only if you find a block.

Advanced setup: XMRig

XMRig is an open-source CPU miner with official macOS builds for Intel and Apple-silicon Macs. Download only from the project’s official site and use its configuration wizard or JSON configuration file rather than copying an unknown configuration from a forum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For solo mining with a local Monero daemon, the Monero documentation gives this macOS/Linux command pattern:

./xmrig --daemon -o 127.0.0.1:18081 -u XMR_WALLET_ADDRESS --daemon-zmq-port 18083

Replace XMR_WALLET_ADDRESS with your public primary wallet address. Never paste a wallet seed, private key, or wallet password into a command or miner configuration. Your local daemon must be running and synchronized.

Useful controls include:

  • --threads=N limits CPU mining threads.
  • --pause-on-battery prevents mining on battery power.
  • --pause-on-active=N helps reduce mining while you are using the Mac.
  • --dry-run checks configuration without normal mining.
  • --benchmark or --bench=N measures performance without mining.
  • --no-cpu disables CPU mining.

For a controlled test, run:

./xmrig --bench=1M

Benchmark mode measures performance; it does not earn coins. The official guide notes that launching XMRig with sudo may produce a higher macOS hashrate in some cases. Do not use elevated privileges casually: first verify the software and understand exactly what you are running.

macOS security: do not treat Gatekeeper as an obstacle

Mining software is frequently impersonated or bundled with malware. Download only from the official Monero or XMRig domain, verify signatures or hashes where provided, and avoid sponsored search results and download mirrors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple warns that overriding macOS security settings to open an unidentified application is a common way Macs become infected. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally or blindly run an xattr command copied from a forum.

If the source is trusted and the download has been independently verified, Apple’s temporary exception is at System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway, generally available for about an hour after an attempted launch. If macOS says the application contains malware or will damage your computer, stop and delete it rather than overriding the warning. See Apple’s Gatekeeper guidance.

Monitor heat, power, and responsiveness

  1. Open Activity Monitor.
  2. Select the CPU tab and sort by CPU usage.
  3. Identify XMRig, monerod, or the Monero GUI.
  4. Watch CPU utilization, memory pressure, energy impact, and responsiveness.
  5. Stop mining if the Mac becomes unstable, excessively noisy, unusually hot, or unusable.

Apple’s Activity Monitor documentation also describes Window → CPU Usage and Window → CPU History. There is no single mining-specific temperature limit that applies to every Mac. Keep air intakes clear, use a hard ventilated surface, and watch for throttling or crashes.

Never mine on a MacBook in a bag, drawer, or on bedding. Use --pause-on-battery, reduce threads, and avoid leaving a portable Mac under sustained load unattended indefinitely. Sustained high load increases heat, fan activity, and energy use; long-term hardware effects depend on the model and operating conditions.

Solo mining, pools, and P2Pool

Solo mining is the most independent approach, but its rewards are highly irregular. A small miner can operate for a long time without finding a block. Conventional pools combine miners and generally offer more predictable accounting, but they charge fees and pay according to their own thresholds and schedules. P2Pool offers decentralized pooled mining and share-based payouts, but it requires more technical setup and synchronization.

If your balance does not increase, check whether you are solo mining, whether the pool’s payout threshold has been reached, whether accepted shares are appearing, whether the wallet and node are synchronized, and whether the address is correct. Pool endpoints, ports, fees, TLS requirements, and payout policies change, so obtain those details from the selected pool’s current official documentation.

Troubleshooting

The app will not open

Confirm the official download source, re-download and verify the archive, and check whether your Mac is Intel or Apple silicon. Use macos-x64 for Intel and macos-arm64 for Apple silicon. Do not weaken system security globally.

XMRig reports poor performance

Run the official benchmark, reduce or adjust thread count, close unnecessary applications, confirm the correct architecture, and compare performance only after the Mac reaches steady-state temperature. Apple-silicon macOS limitations and thermal throttling can both matter. A benchmark from another Mac is not a reliable prediction for yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The node uses too much storage

Consider a pruned node if supported, free additional disk space, or move blockchain data to a suitable external drive. Do not delete blockchain files while the node is running.

The Mac becomes unusable

Stop mining normally and quit XMRig or the Monero GUI. Use Activity Monitor to force-quit only if necessary. Reduce threads or configure an activity pause option. Avoid creating hidden startup services until you understand how to remove them.

When mining makes sense—and when it does not

Mining can be reasonable when you already own the Mac, have inexpensive electricity, can ventilate it properly, and want to learn about proof of work. It is a poor fit if you must buy a Mac specifically for mining, pay expensive electricity, depend on the machine for work, expect passive income, cannot secure a wallet seed, or want competitive Bitcoin mining.

Measure before deciding. A Mac mini already used for other purposes may be a sensible experiment; a new Mac Studio purchased solely to mine is generally a difficult investment to justify without unusually favorable, current assumptions.

Alternatives that may teach you more

  • Run a Monero node without mining.
  • Use XMRig benchmark mode only.
  • Run a testnet or stagenet node.
  • Study wallet security and blockchain operation.
  • Use purpose-built mining hardware if your goal is commercial mining.
  • Buy a small amount of cryptocurrency instead of trying to produce it.

How to stop and remove the miner

Use the GUI’s normal stop control or stop XMRig from its terminal, then quit the application. If necessary, use Activity Monitor to force-quit the process. Remove the miner and its configuration files only after confirming that no wallet data is stored there. If you configured the miner to start automatically, remove that startup configuration carefully and verify that the process no longer returns after restarting the Mac.
