There is no evidence-based rule that makes five Harley-Davidson models universally “new buys” and five universally “used buys.” The sensible split is by generation, equipment, warranty and the condition of the specific motorcycle. For a U.S. shopper comparing recent model years, the strongest new-bike cases are Harley-Davidson’s 2026 Grand American Touring and CVO families and the redesigned 2025 Cruisers. The strongest used-bike cases are inspected examples from the generations immediately before those changes.

Use the lists below as a shortlist, then compare an itemized out-the-door quote with the complete cost and risk of the actual used bike.

What “buy new” should mean for a Harley-Davidson

A new purchase is most defensible when the current model year has equipment you specifically want, when you value zero previous use, or when the price gap to a comparable used motorcycle is small after financing, taxes, fees, immediate maintenance and warranty are included.

Harley-Davidson’s U.S. 2026 lineup is organized into Cruiser, Grand American Touring, Sport, Trike and Adventure Touring families. The lineup page shows starting MSRPs, but those are not out-the-door prices. Request an itemized dealer quote covering freight, setup, documentation, taxes, registration and any accessories.

Five Harley-Davidsons that make a conditional case for buying new

Candidate Why new can make sense What to verify before signing
2026 Street Glide It is part of the current Grand American Touring range, where Harley-Davidson says Milwaukee-Eight VVT 117 introductions matter to buyers seeking the latest powertrain and equipment. Exact engine and standard-equipment specification on the dealer’s vehicle identification number (VIN), plus the complete out-the-door quote.
2026 Road Glide Same current Grand American Touring rationale: a buyer who wants the 2026 powertrain changes may prefer a factory-new example over an earlier generation. Availability, installed options, delivery charges and financing terms.
2026 CVO Street Glide The 2026 CVO family is included in Harley-Davidson’s description of Milwaukee-Eight VVT 117 and High Output 121 introductions. New is the clearest way to obtain the exact current specification and full factory history. Which engine and features apply to the particular CVO trim; CVO inventory and dealer-added accessories can materially change the quote.
2026 CVO Road Glide It fits the same “latest CVO powertrain and equipment” buyer profile, not a claim that every CVO is better value than a used one. Compare the new quote with certified-used CVO examples, including warranty scope and mileage.
2025 Street Bob Harley-Davidson describes the 2025 Cruiser redesign as a major change, and the Street Bob page identifies a Milwaukee-Eight 117 Classic engine plus chassis-related revisions. Buyers who want that redesign, electronics and lighting can rationally pay for new. Confirm the model-year equipment, Rider Safety Enhancements, ride modes, suspension specification and remaining local inventory.

For any of these candidates, buying new also establishes the service record from mile zero. That convenience is valuable only if the premium fits your budget and the new features are ones you will use.

Five Harley-Davidsons that are often worth comparing used

These are generation-based candidates, not reliability or depreciation rankings. Harley-Davidson’s published material does not establish that they are always cheaper to own or inherently more reliable. Judge the individual motorcycle’s price, title, mileage, records, tires, warranty and inspection results.

Candidate Why a used example can fit Decision trigger
Pre-2024 Street Glide The 2024 Street Glide was a major update, including the 117 engine, selectable ride modes, a 12.3-inch touch display, aerodynamic work, more rear-suspension travel and a revised seat. A pre-update bike suits riders who prefer that earlier layout or find a particularly well-documented example. Buy only when the earlier equipment genuinely suits you and the total price reflects condition; the available evidence does not prove a universal price advantage.
Pre-2024 Road Glide It is the prior generation to the same 2024 touring redesign. Some riders may prefer its controls, display or riding position, while a used example can offer a lower entry price if condition is strong. Compare the specific bike’s service history and desired features with a new or certified alternative.
Pre-2025 Street Bob A prior Cruiser generation is a logical used comparison for shoppers who prefer its equipment, styling or negotiated price to the 2025 redesign. Check which safety, ride-mode, suspension and lighting features are absent before treating the discount as a bargain.
Pre-2025 Fat Boy (Cruiser generation) It represents the broader pre-redesign Cruiser choice: the earlier specification may be exactly what a rider wants, without paying for 2025 changes that are not important to them. Compare like-for-like equipment, mileage and maintenance rather than assuming an age-based saving.
Pre-2025 Heritage Classic (Cruiser generation) A used prior-generation Heritage Classic can make sense when its equipment and fit are preferred and the motorcycle has complete records. Price immediate tires and service into the deal and verify title, VIN history and warranty status.

New versus used: calculate the real cost

Use one worksheet for both motorcycles. Harley-Davidson advises used-bike shoppers to budget for costs beyond the advertised price, including financing, insurance, tax, registration and possible safety-check or roadworthiness work.

Cost or protection New quote Used quote
Purchase price Dealer’s itemized price, not the starting MSRP Advertised price plus any dealer or private-party charges
Taxes and registration Use your state’s actual figures Use the same method and include title-transfer costs
Financing and insurance Obtain an actual lender and insurer quote Obtain an actual lender and insurer quote; rates may differ by age and value
Immediate work Usually limited to setup or accessories, but verify what is included Reserve for tires, fluids, battery, brakes, inspection and overdue services
Warranty Confirm the factory warranty and exclusions in writing Confirm whether any factory, dealer or certified coverage transfers

A used bike that is $3,000 cheaper can lose that advantage quickly if it needs tires, a major service and warranty-risk repairs. Conversely, paying for a new redesign you do not need may be poor personal-finance value.

When certified used changes the calculation

Harley-Davidson says its Certified pre-owned program includes a 110-point inspection, a 12-month/unlimited-mileage limited powertrain warranty covering the engine and transmission, and one year of H.O.G. membership with roadside assistance. Those are program terms, not benefits attached to every used Harley-Davidson. Ask the selling dealer to confirm eligibility, the exact warranty document, exclusions and roadside-assistance terms for the VIN.

Compare the certified motorcycle’s actual advertised price with an equivalent private-party bike and with the new quote. A dealer-used motorcycle may cost more because inspection, tune-up, paperwork support, financing or a basic warranty is included.

Used-bike inspection checklist

Harley-Davidson’s buying guidance warns that a private-party purchase is a “buyer beware” proposition. Treat inspection evidence as part of the price negotiation.

  • Helpful in various ways
  1. Request records. Ask for invoices, scheduled-maintenance entries, ownership information and any accident or storage history. Ask whether a dealer can check service records by VIN.
  2. Inspect tires. Check tread, cracking, uneven wear and the manufacture date. Budget replacement if age or condition is questionable.
  3. Check pressure and the air filter. Verify tire pressure against the model specification and inspect the air filter; a basic pressure gauge is useful but cannot replace a full mechanical inspection.
  4. Check title and identity. Match the VIN on the motorcycle to the title and records, and resolve liens before payment.
  5. Price roadworthiness work. Include fluids, battery, brakes, belts, fork seals and other items a qualified technician identifies.
  6. Get an independent inspection when the seller permits it. A cold-start, leak and chassis check can reveal issues a short ride or photographs will not.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose new when the 2026 powertrain or 2025 Cruiser redesign is central to your use, the dealer quote is affordable, and you value a known history and current warranty.
  • Choose used when you prefer the prior generation, the exact motorcycle passes inspection, and the all-in saving remains meaningful after immediate work and protection are included.
  • Walk away when records, title, VIN identity, tire condition or warranty terms cannot be verified.
