There is no evidence-based rule that makes five Harley-Davidson models universally “new buys” and five universally “used buys.” The sensible split is by generation, equipment, warranty and the condition of the specific motorcycle. For a U.S. shopper comparing recent model years, the strongest new-bike cases are Harley-Davidson’s 2026 Grand American Touring and CVO families and the redesigned 2025 Cruisers. The strongest used-bike cases are inspected examples from the generations immediately before those changes.
Use the lists below as a shortlist, then compare an itemized out-the-door quote with the complete cost and risk of the actual used bike.
What “buy new” should mean for a Harley-Davidson
A new purchase is most defensible when the current model year has equipment you specifically want, when you value zero previous use, or when the price gap to a comparable used motorcycle is small after financing, taxes, fees, immediate maintenance and warranty are included.
Harley-Davidson’s U.S. 2026 lineup is organized into Cruiser, Grand American Touring, Sport, Trike and Adventure Touring families. The lineup page shows starting MSRPs, but those are not out-the-door prices. Request an itemized dealer quote covering freight, setup, documentation, taxes, registration and any accessories.

For any of these candidates, buying new also establishes the service record from mile zero. That convenience is valuable only if the premium fits your budget and the new features are ones you will use.
Five Harley-Davidsons that are often worth comparing used
These are generation-based candidates, not reliability or depreciation rankings. Harley-Davidson’s published material does not establish that they are always cheaper to own or inherently more reliable. Judge the individual motorcycle’s price, title, mileage, records, tires, warranty and inspection results.

New versus used: calculate the real cost
Use one worksheet for both motorcycles. Harley-Davidson advises used-bike shoppers to budget for costs beyond the advertised price, including financing, insurance, tax, registration and possible safety-check or roadworthiness work.

A used bike that is $3,000 cheaper can lose that advantage quickly if it needs tires, a major service and warranty-risk repairs. Conversely, paying for a new redesign you do not need may be poor personal-finance value.
When certified used changes the calculation
Harley-Davidson says its Certified pre-owned program includes a 110-point inspection, a 12-month/unlimited-mileage limited powertrain warranty covering the engine and transmission, and one year of H.O.G. membership with roadside assistance. Those are program terms, not benefits attached to every used Harley-Davidson. Ask the selling dealer to confirm eligibility, the exact warranty document, exclusions and roadside-assistance terms for the VIN.
Compare the certified motorcycle’s actual advertised price with an equivalent private-party bike and with the new quote. A dealer-used motorcycle may cost more because inspection, tune-up, paperwork support, financing or a basic warranty is included.

- Request records. Ask for invoices, scheduled-maintenance entries, ownership information and any accident or storage history. Ask whether a dealer can check service records by VIN.
- Inspect tires. Check tread, cracking, uneven wear and the manufacture date. Budget replacement if age or condition is questionable.
- Check pressure and the air filter. Verify tire pressure against the model specification and inspect the air filter; a basic pressure gauge is useful but cannot replace a full mechanical inspection.
- Check title and identity. Match the VIN on the motorcycle to the title and records, and resolve liens before payment.
- Price roadworthiness work. Include fluids, battery, brakes, belts, fork seals and other items a qualified technician identifies.
- Get an independent inspection when the seller permits it. A cold-start, leak and chassis check can reveal issues a short ride or photographs will not.
A practical decision rule
- Choose new when the 2026 powertrain or 2025 Cruiser redesign is central to your use, the dealer quote is affordable, and you value a known history and current warranty.
- Choose used when you prefer the prior generation, the exact motorcycle passes inspection, and the all-in saving remains meaningful after immediate work and protection are included.
- Walk away when records, title, VIN identity, tire condition or warranty terms cannot be verified.
