Square is the best all-around QR payment platform for most U.S. small businesses because it combines payments with point-of-sale tools, receipts, reporting, and optional hardware. PayPal Business is the simplest choice for a printable, no-hardware QR code, while Stripe Payment Links is strongest for invoices, websites, fixed-price services, and online checkout.

Those products are not interchangeable. Some create a merchant checkout, some open a payment link, and others route customers through a consumer wallet. The right choice depends on whether you need card acceptance, tipping, inventory, restaurant ordering, fast settlement, or simply a reliable way to display a payment code.

QR payment apps compared

The comparison below is for U.S. businesses. Fees, availability, account eligibility, hardware, and features can vary by plan, transaction type, industry, processor, and date. Published rates were checked against the supplied provider pages in August 2026.

A QR code is only the doorway. The underlying payment system determines what the customer can use, how the sale is recorded, and what happens if something goes wrong.

Static QR codes

A static code is reused and usually points to a business profile, account, or payment page. The customer may need to enter the amount manually. Static codes are inexpensive and practical for tips, donations, stalls, service calls, and occasional sales.

The trade-off is operational: customers can enter the wrong amount, staff must verify payment, and the code may not create an itemized order in your POS. A physical code can also be replaced with a fraudulent sticker.

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic or transaction-specific code is generated for a particular order, amount, table, invoice, or cart. It reduces amount-entry errors and is more useful for restaurants and busy retail operations, but it normally depends on a compatible POS, plan, or hardware.

Payment-link QR codes

This code opens a hosted checkout page in the customer’s browser. Stripe Payment Links can be converted into QR codes, making them useful for invoices, menus, websites, printed materials, receipts, and fixed-price services. The customer may be able to pay by card or wallet without having the merchant’s preferred app.

The 9 best QR payment apps

1. Square: best overall for a full POS

Square’s free POS software tier makes it the strongest default for a retailer, food truck, salon, market vendor, or service business that wants QR payments alongside cards and cash. You can later add readers, terminals, inventory, appointments, invoices, payroll, and broader reporting.

Square’s advantage is not necessarily a special QR discount. It is the operating system around the payment: receipts, sales history, tender reporting, and a path to more structured checkout. However, Square publishes different rates for different payment categories. Its fee information distinguishes transaction types, so do not apply one generic Square rate to every QR transaction.

Choose it if: you want a scalable POS rather than an informal wallet transfer. Skip it if: you only need one occasional printed code and do not need business-management tools.

2. PayPal Business: best simple standalone QR option

PayPal Business QR lets a merchant display a reusable code on a phone, in the camera roll, or on printed signage. PayPal says the code does not expire, and customers can enter the amount and add a tip.

PayPal’s dedicated U.S. QR page lists 2.29% + $0.09 per QR transaction as checked in August 2026. That is not a universal PayPal rate: invoices, card payments, PayPal checkout, Venmo transactions, and other methods can be priced differently. The same account can also support online checkout and invoicing.

Choose it if: you need a fast no-hardware setup. Skip it if: your staff need inventory controls, automatic order matching, or restaurant workflows.

3. Venmo Business: best for Venmo users

Venmo business profiles give sole proprietors and small businesses a recognizable business identity inside Venmo. They can be useful for local services, tips, casual selling, and events where customers already use Venmo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Venmo’s Tap to Pay page lists 1.9% + $0.10 for direct and QR-code payments. Confirm that the rate applies to your account type and exact payment flow before relying on it. Venmo is U.S.-focused, and its business profile is not a substitute for inventory, employee permissions, or a complete POS.

Choose it if: your customers actively prefer Venmo. Skip it if: you need universal card-in-browser access or detailed retail operations.

4. Stripe Payment Links: best for online and remote payments

Stripe Payment Links creates no-code hosted payment pages that can be shared digitally or represented by a QR code. Create separate links for a consultation, product, deposit, donation, subscription, or invoice and place the corresponding code on a receipt, sign, website, or printed instruction sheet.

Stripe’s standard U.S. pricing begins at 2.9% + $0.30 for a successful domestic card transaction. Other payment methods, international cards, currency conversion, invoicing, instant payouts, and advanced features can change the total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: the QR code should open a browser checkout or connect to online reporting and APIs. Skip it if: you need a ready-made physical POS with minimal configuration.

5. SumUp: best for straightforward mobile selling

SumUp QR lets merchants create a code in the app, add a description or price, print it, and send customers to a secure payment page. It is aimed at markets, artists, events, and small mobile operations that do not need a complicated POS.

SumUp’s U.S. QR page lists 3.5% + $0.15 per QR transaction, with no monthly minimum stated on that page. The fixed fee matters: it can be expensive for both very small purchases and larger sales. Check the live page before publishing or setting prices.

Choose it if: you want simple card-enabled QR acceptance at occasional events. Skip it if: your average ticket is high or you need deep inventory and accounting tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Clover: best for a hardware-based POS

Clover is better understood as a POS ecosystem than as a QR-only app. QR ordering and payment features depend on the device and plan. For example, Clover’s Station Solo pricing page shows “Scan QR code to pay” in a restaurant-growth configuration but not in the listed retail-growth configuration. Its Mini restaurant page likewise shows selected QR capabilities.

Clover can suit established retailers and restaurants that need hardware, catalogs, employee management, orders, and multiple tender types. Pricing may differ between Clover, a reseller, and a payment processor, so compare the complete contract rather than only the device price.

Choose it if: QR payments must fit a dedicated POS. Skip it if: you are a freelancer who only needs a sign.

7. Toast: best for restaurant QR ordering and table payments

Toast is a restaurant platform, not a general-purpose QR wallet. Its mobile-payment material describes guests scanning a QR code, while the larger value is connecting menu browsing, ordering, tips, payment, tables, kitchen workflows, and reconciliation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Toast is a strong fit for full-service restaurants, cafes, bars, and counter-service operations where a generic payment code would leave staff manually matching orders. Hardware, software, processing, and contract terms should be reviewed together. It is generally excessive for a non-restaurant business that only wants a printable payment link.

8. Cash App Pay: best as an additional method for Stripe merchants

Cash App Pay lets eligible customers pay with a Cash App balance or linked debit card. On desktop, the customer can scan a QR code; on mobile, the flow can redirect to the Cash App. Stripe supports the method for eligible U.S. businesses.

Stripe’s payment-method pricing page shows 2.9% + $0.30 for Cash App Pay under its standard pricing display. This is not the same as receiving money through a personal Cash App account. You typically need an eligible merchant-processing setup, and the benefit is unified Stripe reporting and payouts.

Choose it if: you already use Stripe and want to add Cash App. Skip it if: you want a standalone printed code with no processor integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Zelle for business: use only after bank verification

Zelle may be available to eligible small businesses through participating U.S. banks, but there is no universal business QR workflow, fee schedule, transaction limit, or protection policy that can responsibly be applied to every bank.

Before choosing it, ask your bank whether your business account supports the exact QR feature, limits, reporting, and dispute process you need. Zelle-style bank transfers may lack card-style chargebacks, itemized receipts, inventory integration, tips, or POS reconciliation. Never treat a screenshot as proof of payment; verify the incoming transaction in the bank interface.

Choose it if: your bank explicitly supports the required business features and you understand the protections. Skip it if: you need broad card acceptance or a formal refund workflow.

Which app is cheapest?

There is no universal lowest-fee option because the answer changes with payment method and ticket size. A fixed fee has a much larger effect on a $10 sale than on a $100 sale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At $10, 2.29% + $0.09 is about $0.32.
  • At $10, 3.5% + $0.15 is about $0.50.
  • At $100, 2.29% + $0.09 is about $2.38.
  • At $100, 3.5% + $0.15 is about $3.65.

These are illustrations based on the cited published rates, not guaranteed total costs. For high-volume businesses, compare negotiated pricing and bank-transfer options. For low-dollar sales, compare the fixed fee, not just the percentage. Also include instant-payout charges, refunds, disputes, hardware, subscriptions, and reseller terms.

Best choice by business type

  • Retail: Square for an accessible POS; Clover if you want dedicated hardware and have compared the contract.
  • Restaurant: Toast for integrated QR ordering; Clover restaurant configurations for a hardware-led alternative.
  • Freelancer or consultant: PayPal for a simple code, or Stripe for payment links and invoices.
  • Market vendor or pop-up: SumUp, Square, or PayPal, depending on whether you need card acceptance, POS reporting, or the simplest setup.
  • Venmo-heavy audience: Venmo Business.
  • Cash App-heavy audience: Cash App Pay through Stripe.
  • Online business: Stripe Payment Links.
  • Bank-transfer preference: Zelle only when your bank confirms the business implementation.

How to set up a QR payment safely

  1. Open a verified business or merchant account and connect the business bank account.
  2. Confirm the public business name, currency, and settlement account.
  3. Choose a reusable amount-entry code, fixed-price code, payment link, invoice, menu code, or transaction-specific checkout.
  4. Generate the QR code inside the payment platform. A generic QR generator can encode a URL, but it is not a payment processor.
  5. Scan it from a second phone before printing. Confirm the business name, amount, checkout domain, payment methods, tip option, receipt, and confirmation screen.
  6. Print it at a usable size with clear wording such as “Scan to pay,” and inspect physical signage regularly.
  7. Train staff to confirm completed payment in the merchant dashboard or POS—not from a screenshot.
  8. Match the transaction to the order, invoice, or table and reconcile it with the daily report.
  9. Run a small live transaction and confirm its settlement status before depending on the system.
  10. Keep a backup card reader, Tap to Pay option, cash process, or payment link.

Security, refunds, and failure points

Fake QR codes and altered signage

A QR code can be replaced with a sticker or edited in a digital image. Use branded displays, inspect printed codes, and make the destination business name obvious. If possible, use a recognizable hosted payment domain and a code-specific description.

Fake or pending payment claims

A screenshot can be forged or can show a pending, failed, reversed, or under-review payment. Verify the transaction in your own merchant or bank interface, including the amount and order reference, before handing over goods.

Wrong amounts

Static codes commonly require manual entry. State the total clearly and check the completed transaction. For busy operations, use fixed-price or dynamic codes tied to the order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connectivity and settlement

Displaying a code does not make the payment system offline. Completing and confirming payment generally requires connectivity; PayPal notes that a stable internet connection may be required. A new or unusual account can also face delayed settlement or a risk review. Do not promise same-day access to every payment.

Refunds and accounting

Before launch, determine whether refunds return to the original method, whether the fee is returned, and whether the POS can issue the refund. Record gross sales separately from processing fees, collect and report the correct sales tax, and reconcile payouts rather than treating a bank deposit as gross revenue.

QR codes versus card readers

QR acceptance is not automatically cheaper or faster. A card reader or Tap to Pay may be better when customers do not want to install an app, when throughput matters, when staff need automatic order matching, or when the business operates with unreliable connectivity.

QR codes are particularly useful for printed invoices, menus, receipts, social profiles, fixed-price services, tips, and backup acceptance. Many businesses should offer both: a broad card or wallet checkout for convenience and a QR option for customers who prefer scanning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final verdict

For most U.S. small businesses, start with Square if you need a real operating system and PayPal Business if you only need a reusable code quickly. Choose Stripe Payment Links when the QR code is really an online checkout link, Toast or appropriately configured Clover for restaurant workflows, and SumUp for straightforward pop-up selling. Treat Venmo and Cash App Pay as wallet-specific additions, and choose Zelle only after your bank confirms the exact business features and protections.
