Tech companies need more than people who know the latest apps. They need employees who can use AI responsibly, make sound decisions with data, protect information, work across digital systems and connect technology to customer needs. The seven capabilities below are a practical framework—not a demand that every employee become a programmer, data scientist or cloud architect.

The right model is T-shaped: everyone develops safe, useful digital fluency; managers learn to make decisions and redesign work around technology; specialists build the depth needed to engineer, secure and scale systems. That distinction matters: the OECD estimates that fewer than 1% of workers need advanced AI-specific skills such as model development, while broader data and digital capabilities matter to far more people. OECD, AI and Skills

What counts as a digital skill?

A durable digital skill is a capability that helps a company create value, make better decisions or reduce risk—not simply familiarity with a particular software brand. A team that can check an AI result, interpret a metric, control access to customer data and document a decision is better equipped than one that has purchased tools without agreeing how to use them.

This framework reflects current workforce evidence, but it is not a universal ranking. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, based on more than 1,000 leading global employers and looking toward 2030, identifies analytical thinking as the leading core skill; about seven in ten surveyed companies consider it essential. AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and technological literacy are among the fastest-rising skill areas. These are international employer findings, not a forecast for every company or country. World Economic Forum, skills outlook

1. AI literacy and workflow automation

AI literacy means knowing what generative AI, predictive systems and AI agents can and cannot do—and how to use them within a real work process. It includes asking clear questions and supplying appropriate context, but it does not end at prompt writing. The more durable skill is AI-enabled work design: selecting a useful task, understanding the data and permissions involved, checking results, and deciding where a person must review or approve the output.

Employees should be able to tell whether a task is suitable for AI, test an answer against a known source or expected result, spot plausible but incorrect output, and avoid entering sensitive information into an unapproved system. Managers need to map the whole workflow, define ownership and human-review checkpoints, and assess whether the change improves quality, time, cost or customer outcomes. Specialists may build integrations, agents, evaluation systems or AI platforms.

  • Useful baseline: use an approved tool for a low-risk task, verify its output, and explain what information it used.
  • Manager-level capability: document the process, permissions, review steps and failure route before automating it.
  • Specialist depth: connect systems through APIs or scripts, evaluate model behavior and monitor production use.

Automation can make a sound process faster, but it can also make a broken process fail faster. Start by understanding the work as it is done now. The OECD reports that AI adoption among firms in OECD countries rose from about 7% in 2021 to 20% in 2025, while skills shortages remain a constraint, particularly for smaller firms. Adoption figures show uptake, not proven productivity gains. OECD, skills in the AI age

Employer interest in agents is also not the same as deployment success. Microsoft’s 2025 Work Trend Index found that 81% of surveyed leaders expected agents to be moderately or extensively integrated into their AI strategy within the following 12–18 months. That is a survey of expectations, not evidence that every planned integration will deliver results. Microsoft Work Trend Index 2025

2. Data literacy and analytics

Data literacy is the ability to understand what a number represents, how it was produced and whether it supports a decision. Most employees do not need to become data scientists. They do need to read charts critically, understand rates and percentages, recognize missing or skewed data, and know when a comparison is unfair. For many roles, spreadsheet and dashboard fluency is a sensible starting point; some technical roles also benefit from basic SQL, data cleaning and visualization skills.

A useful employee can ask: Where did this number come from? What exactly does the metric measure? What is missing? Is the comparison like-for-like? Would the decision change if the number moved? Does the evidence show causation, or only that two things changed together?

Managers should choose measures linked to an outcome and be alert to incentives that encourage teams to optimize a metric at the expense of the real goal. Specialists need deeper skills in data quality, lineage, permissions, retention, analytics engineering or statistics. More data does not guarantee better judgment: unclear definitions and biased collection can make a precise-looking dashboard misleading. The OECD identifies the ability to use, analyze and interpret data as a broad workforce need in an AI-enabled economy. OECD, AI and Skills

3. Cybersecurity and digital risk management

Cybersecurity is a shared operating skill, not a responsibility that can be handed entirely to the security team. Every employee affects risk through account protection, data handling, access decisions and how quickly they report something suspicious.

At a minimum, employees should use multifactor authentication (MFA), avoid password reuse by using an approved password manager, recognize suspicious links and login prompts, protect confidential information, and report a suspected incident promptly. They should verify unusual payment, credential or access requests through a second, trusted channel. Managers need to reinforce least-privilege access—giving people only the access they need—and ensure teams know where to report problems.

Security specialists require deeper expertise in identity and access management, networks, secure coding, logging, vulnerability management, backups, recovery and incident response. They also need to consider vendors and AI systems. The World Economic Forum’s 2026 cybersecurity report identifies third-party and supply-chain vulnerabilities as a major concern for large organizations. It also reports that 77% of surveyed organizations had adopted AI for cybersecurity, including phishing detection and anomaly response. That survey figure describes adoption; it is not a recommendation to let automated systems make high-impact security decisions without oversight. Annual awareness videos alone are not a security program. Companies also need secure defaults, appropriate access controls, maintained systems, tested recovery procedures and a fast reporting path. A purchased security product cannot compensate for unclear ownership or an untested backup.

4. Cloud and platform fluency

Cloud fluency is an understanding of how hosted applications, infrastructure, data, identity, networks and backups fit together. A non-specialist should know where company information is stored, who can access it, why a public link can expose it, and what might happen if a service fails. Managers need to understand usage-based costs and continuity risks. Technical staff need the ability to deploy, monitor, secure and recover services using approved company patterns.

Cloud expertise can include infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and software as a service; databases, containers, serverless services, infrastructure as code and continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) may matter for technical roles. The appropriate depth depends on the job. Moving a workload to a cloud provider does not automatically make it secure, resilient or cost-effective: identity, observability, recovery planning and cost control still matter.

  • Public cloud: provides access to scalable services, but pricing and governance can become complex.
  • Private or on-premises infrastructure: may offer more direct control in some settings, but the company carries more operational responsibility.
  • Multicloud: can support resilience or procurement flexibility, while increasing integration and monitoring complexity.
  • Managed services: reduce some operational work, but can create vendor dependency and constrain customization.

The right choice depends on workload, compliance needs, staff capability and the cost of failure—not on the assumption that one deployment model is best for every company. Cloud technologies are among the technologies shaping cybersecurity, according to the WEF’s 2026 report cited above.

5. Software development, APIs and technical problem-solving

Companies rely on software even when software is not what they sell. Websites, customer portals, internal automations, integrations and data pipelines all need people who can describe what a system should do, test whether it works and keep it useful over time.

Technical roles commonly need programming or scripting, version control such as Git, testing and debugging, databases, APIs, documentation, code review and secure development practices. Nontechnical employees do not all need to code. Depending on the role, useful minimums could be reproducing and documenting a bug, writing a clear technical requirement, understanding an API description, or automating a repetitive task with an approved tool.

AI coding assistants can help generate or explain code, but generated code still needs review, tests, security checks and an accountable maintainer. Faster code production is not the same as a reliable product. Google Cloud’s 2025 DORA report says 90% of surveyed organizations had adopted at least one internal platform and discusses how platform quality relates to gaining value from AI-assisted development. The research concerns software-delivery organizations; it should not be read as a requirement for every business to build an internal platform. Google Cloud, 2025 DORA report

6. Digital collaboration and project delivery

Digital tools cannot resolve unclear ownership, poor handoffs or missing decisions. Effective collaboration means communicating clearly in writing, keeping shared documents findable, recording decisions and assumptions, breaking work into manageable tasks, and coordinating across teams and time zones. It also means choosing when a meeting is useful and when an update can be handled asynchronously.

A team should be able to state who owns a task, when it is due, what decision has been made and what happens next. People should know where the current version of a document lives, how to raise a blocker and how to hand work to another function without losing context. Managers add prioritization and change-management skills: explaining why a process is changing, listening to the people doing the work, and checking whether the new approach is actually adopted.

Buying another collaboration or project-management tool is not a substitute for shared conventions. Teams need clear rules for naming, ownership, permissions, archiving and decision records or they risk creating more information sprawl. The WEF identifies human capabilities such as analytical thinking alongside technology skills, and the OECD highlights continuing needs for problem-solving, creativity, innovation and managerial skills. 7. Customer, product and digital experience skills

Technology creates value when customers can understand, use and trust the result. Customer and product skills keep digital capability connected to real needs rather than internal assumptions. They include user research, customer discovery, basic accessibility and user-experience (UX) principles, digital communication, customer relationship management (CRM), product analytics and experiment design.

A team with this capability can identify a user problem before choosing a tool, map the customer journey across web, mobile, email, sales and support, and test an interface or message with representative users. It can measure task completion, activation, retention, satisfaction or revenue—and distinguish those outcomes from vanity metrics such as raw page views. Privacy and accessibility requirements should be considered early, not added after launch.

Some companies need this expertise internally to preserve customer knowledge and product judgment; others can buy analytics or CRM software or work with an agency. Custom product development can support differentiation but creates ongoing maintenance and security responsibilities. External partners can supply scarce skills quickly, but the company still needs enough internal knowledge to set requirements, manage access, assess work and take over if the relationship ends.

How to decide which skills to build first

There is no universal ordering for every employer. Prioritize based on business dependence, risk exposure, customer value, skill scarcity, trainability and the cost of failure. For most companies, cybersecurity awareness, basic data interpretation, AI judgment and digital collaboration form a sensible workforce baseline. Cloud and software skills become more urgent when the business depends heavily on custom applications, integrations or digital infrastructure. Customer and product capability deserves greater depth when digital channels shape acquisition, service or retention.

  • Small professional-services firm: may benefit first from safe AI use, data and spreadsheet fluency, secure handling of client information, collaboration conventions and customer experience—not a large cloud-engineering team.
  • SaaS company: typically needs deeper engineering, cloud, security and data capabilities because the product and its reliability are central to the business.
  • Regulated organization: may put governance, access controls, auditability and data quality ahead of rapid experimentation.

A practical capability plan

  1. Set a baseline for everyone. Train employees to use approved AI tools safely, interpret common metrics, use MFA, handle information appropriately and document work in the company’s agreed systems.
  2. Develop skills by role. Managers need evidence-based decision-making and workflow design; operations teams may need automation; developers need secure coding and testing; product teams need user research and experimentation.
  3. Hire or partner for specialist depth. Cloud architecture, security engineering, data engineering and advanced AI work may require scarce expertise. Keep enough internal knowledge to define the job, evaluate the work and manage access and continuity.
  4. Assess ability through work. Use realistic exercises, simulations, portfolios and work samples alongside certificates. A credential can show structured learning, but it does not by itself prove that someone can secure a system or interpret a misleading dashboard.
  5. Measure a business outcome. Tie each training or tool investment to an observable result, such as faster delivery, fewer incidents, better decisions, higher task completion or improved retention. Do not treat adoption alone as proof of value.

Who needs what: a capability matrix

Skill Everyone Managers Specialists
AI Use approved tools safely and verify results Redesign workflows and set review rules Build and evaluate models, agents or AI platforms
Data Read metrics and question context Make evidence-based decisions and select measures Build analytics systems, pipelines and advanced analysis
Security Use MFA, spot suspicious requests and report incidents Own access and process risks Engineer security and lead response and recovery
Cloud Understand data location and access basics Consider cost and continuity Architect, operate, secure and recover services
Software Use digital systems effectively and describe problems Specify needs and assess trade-offs Build, test, deploy and maintain systems
Collaboration Document and communicate clearly Coordinate delivery and change Support platform, DevOps and technical program delivery
Customer experience Understand user needs and service standards Prioritize customer outcomes Conduct UX research, product analytics and experiments

Can a company buy or outsource these skills instead?

Yes—some capabilities are more economical to buy, rent or access through a partner than to build as a large internal team. Companies can use managed cloud services, off-the-shelf CRM or analytics products, outside security specialists and agencies. But outsourcing execution does not eliminate the need for internal judgment.

Keep enough knowledge in-house to define requirements, choose access levels, review quality, understand likely costs and dependencies, and plan for outages or a change of provider. Vendors can supply expertise; the business remains responsible for deciding what it needs and whether the result is safe and useful. Before adopting a cloud service, for example, compare the actual services required and include storage, data transfer, databases, monitoring, support and backups in the cost model. Check regional availability, compliance needs, identity integration and portability. A free tier can help with experiments but is not a reliable estimate of production cost.

The central investment question is not “Which trendy tool should we buy?” It is “Which capability is missing, what outcome should it change, and what level of expertise must we retain ourselves?”
