You can find a workable first shortlist of creators without paying for an influencer-marketing platform. Start with searches on social platforms and Google, follow relevant creators’ networks, and track candidates in a spreadsheet. Marketplaces may let you search for free, while discovery platforms may offer only a time-limited trial. Neither names in a search result nor a high follower count proves that a creator can reach your audience or deliver useful content.
This guide is for brands, agencies, startups, and creator-economy businesses looking to identify and manually vet roughly 10–50 candidates. It focuses on discovery and initial screening—not on replacing campaign-management software, contracts, or audience analytics.
Define the creator you need before you search
A short search brief keeps discovery focused and makes candidates easier to compare. Specify:

- Platform: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitch, LinkedIn, a podcast, a newsletter, or another channel.
- Niche and audience: Include the sub-niche, intended audience, language, and target geography.
- Creator type and size: Decide whether you need an influencer with distribution, a creator who can produce content, or both. Nano, micro, mid-tier, and larger creators are useful starting labels, not guarantees of performance.
- Objective and format: For example, awareness through a Reel, product education in a YouTube review, affiliate sales, app installs, event attendance, or raw user-generated content (UGC).
- Budget and compensation: Set a ceiling and decide whether you are considering a fee, gifting, affiliate commission, or a combination.
- Rights and restrictions: Note whether you need paid-ad usage, whitelisting, exclusivity, raw files, or a particular usage period.
A UGC producer may make excellent content without having a large audience; an influencer may have reach but not be the right person to produce assets for your ads. Treat content production and audience distribution as separate requirements.

1. Search platform keywords and hashtags
Platform-native search is the most durable no-cost starting point. It lets you find public content where it appears, without depending on a third-party database. Search across several types of terms:
- Intent or activity:
#mealprep,#budgettravel. - Identity or expertise:
#runningcoach,#dermatologist. - Community:
#booktok,#vanlife. - Location:
#austinfitness,#londonfoodie. - Format:
#ugccreator,#productreview. - Problem or use case:
#acneskincare,#smallspacesolutions.
Build a list of broad category terms, specific sub-niches, product-use phrases, credentials, local terms, and competitor or adjacent-brand names. Search several terms on each relevant platform; review recent content as well as prominent results. Save accounts only when you can record a specific reason they fit your brief.
Starting with 10–15 relevant hashtags is a practical way to organize a search, as the historical HackerNoon guide suggests, but it is not a required number or a guarantee of coverage. That guide, published March 17, 2022, also recommends examining top posts. Top results can skew toward already-popular accounts, so check newer and less prominent posts too.
Search results are clues, not endorsements. Hashtags can be personalized or ranked differently across accounts; a popular tag does not establish expertise, audience fit, or an active sponsorship business. Verify those points by looking at the profile and recent posts.
2. Search Google with operators
Google can surface public profiles, portfolios, media kits, and creator websites that are hard to find through an app’s search interface. Try queries such as:

Put an exact phrase or credential in quotation marks; add a city, country, or language; and exclude irrelevant results with a minus sign before a term. Search for both profile pages and content, and try local spellings or related terms. Searching for portfolios and media kits can also reveal how a creator presents their work and contact options. The 2022 HackerNoon guide likewise describes combining site:Instagram.com with niche and location terms.

Google results may be old, incomplete, or missing active accounts. Indexed follower counts can be stale, and an appearance in search results does not verify identity, activity, or authenticity. Open the live profile and confirm the handle before adding it to your list.

After finding one strong candidate, look for relevant accounts around them: collaborators tagged in posts, creators who appear in the same videos, recurring knowledgeable commenters, and accounts mentioned in captions, podcasts, newsletters, or roundups. On Instagram and other platforms, inspect similar-account recommendations where available. Their controls and placement can change by app version, device, account, and region, so use the recommendation feature as a concept rather than relying on a fixed button path.
This approach can reveal professional communities, shared events, and creators with overlapping audiences. It can also produce a shortlist full of near-duplicates. Record how each candidate was discovered, then compare their sub-niches, formats, and audiences rather than adding every adjacent account automatically.
4. Browse free creator marketplaces
A marketplace is different from a broad social search: it surfaces creators who have chosen to list themselves and may support hiring as well as discovery. Collabstr says users can search for free and that its platform includes more than 1.1 million creators; these are the vendor’s claims on its site, not an independent count or a guarantee that your niche is comprehensively represented. The site presents creator categories, audience information, and profile pricing examples.
A marketplace can be useful when you want to browse available creators and potentially move toward a defined one-off deliverable. Its listed profiles may not represent every relevant creator, and a displayed rate may not include revisions, exclusivity, paid-media rights, whitelisting, or perpetual usage. Review the content itself and clarify exactly what a quoted amount buys before agreeing to work.

5. Use a discovery-platform trial only if you can evaluate it in time
A free trial can help test structured discovery and analytics, but it is not a permanently free database. Modash advertises discovery across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, a 14-day trial with no credit card required, and starting pricing of $199 per month. It also says its database covers public profiles on those platforms with more than 1,000 followers. These are vendor-stated features and prices accessed August 18, 2026; availability, features, limits, and pricing can change.

Modash may suit a brand moving from one-off research to recurring campaigns. A database filter can speed up candidate discovery, but it cannot establish that a creator is active, available, suitable, or willing to meet your terms. Before starting a trial, prepare search criteria and decide what you need to test; review trial limits and cancellation terms on the service’s current site.
For a more analytics-heavy option, HypeAuditor’s pricing page lists a Basic plan starting at $299 per month billed annually, according to its pricing page accessed August 18, 2026. That makes it a paid upgrade, not a free-search alternative. It may make sense for teams that need structured reports and deeper screening; automated authenticity or fit scores should still be treated as signals to investigate, not a final verdict.
TikTok’s first-party Creator Marketplace is another possible route for TikTok-focused brand–creator discovery and collaboration. TikTok’s business material describes the service; access and eligibility may vary by geography and account. Confirm current regional access before planning around it.

A spreadsheet is a genuinely free tool that turns scattered search results into a usable pipeline. Create one row per candidate and include:
- Creator name, handle, platform, and profile URL.
- Niche, sub-niche, location, language, and intended audience relevance.
- Follower count and the date checked; typical recent views; recent posting frequency.
- Visible likes and comments, plus the engagement estimate and method used.
- Content-quality notes, prior brand collaborations, and any potential competitor conflicts.
- Public contact method, discovery source, outreach date, and response status.
- Quoted rate, deliverables, usage-rights notes, and risk flags.
Use consistent stages so a name does not look approved merely because it is in the sheet:
- Discovered
- Relevance checked
- Activity checked
- Audience and content reviewed
- Contact found
- Outreach sent
- Replied
- Negotiating
- Approved
- Contracted
Free discovery often gives you only public information: a bio, follower count, visible posts, public contact details, and examples of prior work. It generally cannot confirm audience demographics, historical growth, typical reach across a representative sample, current availability, or whether engagement comes from real, relevant people. Keep those unknowns visible rather than treating a profile’s public numbers as verified campaign intelligence.

Estimate visible engagement without mistaking it for performance
For a rough comparison, calculate follower-based engagement from a sample of recent posts:
Follower-based engagement rate = (average likes + average comments) / followers × 100
For video accounts, calculate a separate view signal:
View rate = average recent views / followers × 100
Where possible, sample at least 10 recent posts, exclude obvious outliers such as a viral post, and use a median as well as an average so one unusually strong post does not dominate the picture. Compare sponsored and nonsponsored content separately. Review whether comments are specific and conversational, or instead repetitive, generic, or concentrated around giveaways.
A calculator can save arithmetic, but its formula and sampling assumptions may differ from yours. The HackerNoon article links to Phlanx’s engagement-rate calculator; treat its output as a screening aid rather than an independent verification of an audience.
Neither of these ratios tells you the audience’s geography, product relevance, conversion likelihood, or whether the creator can produce content to a brief. A small account is not automatically more engaged, and a large account is not automatically more valuable. Use the numbers to decide what to inspect or ask next.

Vet for fit, activity, and working risk
Before outreach, review the profile and recent work systematically:
- Relevance: Do recent posts consistently serve the intended niche and audience? Does the creator show credible knowledge, or mostly repeat generic trends? Are language and geography suitable?
- Activity: Check dates of the last 5–10 posts, posting consistency, and whether the account appears abandoned or repurposed. Compare recent views instead of relying only on lifetime follower count.
- Content quality: Assess audio, lighting, hooks, pacing, editing, on-camera presence, and suitability for the intended organic or paid format.
- Audience signals: Look for specific comments, plausible follower-to-view relationships, unexplained follower spikes, giveaway-heavy patterns, or signs of engagement pods. These are prompts for scrutiny, not conclusive proof of fraud.
- Commercial fit: Review prior sponsors, possible competitor conflicts, disclosure practices, responsiveness, and willingness to discuss the rights you need.
Do not treat a bio keyword, creator badge, or visible metric as proof of professional credentials or audience quality. If a credential matters to the campaign, verify it through an appropriate public professional source before relying on it.

The 2022 HackerNoon guide discusses a browser extension for scanning followers and suggests a dummy account and VPN as a way to reduce the risk of scraping. Do not use that workaround as normal discovery advice. Automated collection can create account, privacy, security, and terms-of-service risks; a spare account or VPN does not make a restricted method compliant.
For modest research, review public information manually, use platform recommendations and search engines, or use an authorized marketplace, official API, or vendor-authorized discovery service. Avoid collecting private data, respect opt-outs, and follow applicable outreach and privacy rules in your jurisdiction.
Clarify the deal before you commit
Discovery and vetting do not settle the commercial terms. A posting fee may not include raw files, paid-ad usage, whitelisting, exclusivity, extra revisions, perpetual usage, or cross-platform reposting. Before approving a creator, put the scope in writing and specify:
- Deliverables, format, quantity, and posting dates.
- Revision count and approval process.
- Usage duration, channels, paid-media rights, and any whitelisting or account-access requirements.
- Exclusivity, disclosure expectations, payment timing, and cancellation terms.
Do not assume that a marketplace listing or an initial quote covers rights that are not stated. Confirm what the creator is agreeing to before content is produced or published.
