Best depends on the kind of hosting you need. Azure App Service is the strongest fit for many production .NET applications that benefit from managed deployment and Azure integration. InterServer and SmarterASP.NET are worth comparing for low-cost shared Windows hosting; Liquid Web suits buyers who want a managed Windows VPS; Kamatera gives technically capable users more server control; and AccuWeb offers several Windows hosting levels to compare.

These services are not like-for-like alternatives: a shared hosting account, a VPS you administer, and a managed platform have different costs, controls, and responsibilities. You may not need Windows at all: modern ASP.NET Core applications can often run on Linux. This guide uses the available pricing and product information, including provider price signals reported in August 2026; prices, availability, and plan details can change, so verify the checkout terms and the exact requirements of your application before buying.

Quick comparison

Provider Best for Service model Price signal Main consideration
Azure App Service Managed production .NET apps and APIs Managed PaaS; Windows or Linux Windows Basic B1 was shown at $54.75/month in the cited pricing snapshot Plan and instance costs are only part of an Azure bill; less OS control than a VPS
Liquid Web Buyers who want a Windows VPS with provider support Managed VPS Displayed ASP.NET VPS configurations started at $48/month Clarify what “managed” covers and which configuration the quote is for
InterServer Conventional, budget-conscious IIS sites Shared Windows hosting $8/month advertised on the cited page Shared-host restrictions may rule out custom modules, jobs, or other requirements
AccuWeb Hosting Comparing shared, VPS, and dedicated Windows options Shared, VPS, and dedicated offerings Check current plan and checkout pricing Confirm plan-specific runtimes, database limits, backups, and licensing
SmarterASP.NET Developers seeking an ASP.NET-focused shared host Shared Windows hosting and VPS options Low monthly-equivalent prices have been reported; verify upfront total and renewal A quoted monthly equivalent may depend on a long prepaid term
Kamatera Technical users who want a configurable Windows server Cloud VPS Configuration-dependent; price at checkout Expect to handle more administration and account for licenses, backups, and support

Price signals are not a normalized price comparison: currency, region, tax, term, included licenses, and plan configuration matter. They are not performance or reliability rankings.

Which IIS host should you choose?

  • Choose Azure App Service if you want a managed platform for a production web app or API, plan to use Azure services, and value deployment and scaling options over server-level access.
  • Choose Liquid Web if your application needs a Windows VPS and you want a provider-backed managed service. Ask exactly which operating-system, IIS, backup, and application tasks are included.
  • Compare InterServer and SmarterASP.NET for a straightforward, lower-cost shared Windows account. InterServer lists a concrete set of Windows hosting features; with either provider, test your specific runtime and deployment workflow against the plan limits.
  • Consider AccuWeb if you want to compare multiple Windows hosting models with one provider. Select by plan, not by the general label “Windows hosting.”
  • Choose Kamatera if you need a configurable Windows VPS and have the skills or staff to secure, patch, monitor, and recover a server.

These recommendations reflect fit to the service model, compatibility information, and available price signals—not controlled performance testing. An advertised uptime guarantee is a contractual term, not proof of measured uptime; read its scope, exclusions, and credit provisions.

Do you actually need Windows and IIS?

IIS is Microsoft’s web server, and Windows hosting is often appropriate for applications built on ASP.NET Framework, Classic ASP, Windows-specific libraries or services, Windows Authentication, or IIS-specific configuration. It can also suit a Windows-centric Visual Studio publishing workflow or a particular SQL Server integration.

But “I use .NET” alone does not establish that Windows is required. Modern ASP.NET Core can often run on Linux, in containers, or on a managed Linux platform such as Azure App Service for Linux. Check the application’s target framework, native dependencies, authentication design, background-work model, and deployment tooling first. Linux may provide a less expensive or simpler fit when the application has no Windows-only dependency.

Also distinguish ASP.NET support from support for your exact .NET runtime and hosting setup. Confirm the target version, whether the provider has the required ASP.NET Core Hosting Bundle where applicable, and whether your application’s in-process or out-of-process hosting mode is supported. Do not infer current runtime availability from an old comparison or from a generic “ASP.NET” badge.

Shared Windows hosting, VPS, or managed platform?

Model Good fit when Common constraints and responsibilities
Shared Windows hosting You have a small business site, a modest-traffic application, or a simple API; a control panel and host-managed infrastructure are more useful than administrator access. Usually no administrator or Remote Desktop access; the host controls IIS, app-pool settings, runtimes, and patches. Custom modules, filesystem permissions, scheduled tasks, background processes, WebSockets, outbound connections, and SQL Server resources can be limited.
Windows VPS You need custom IIS settings, separate app pools, Windows services, scheduled tasks, custom modules or permissions, or more predictable compute resources. Costs more and gives you more to operate. Depending on the service, you may own patching, hardening, monitoring, backups, and recovery. Windows and SQL Server licenses may be included, partly included, or charged separately.
Managed PaaS You want a managed application platform, deployment options, and integration with other cloud services rather than a server to configure. You trade operating-system control for platform management. Platform limitations, service-specific billing, and costs for databases, storage, monitoring, networking, or backups still need review.

A shared plan’s “unlimited” storage or transfer does not mean dedicated CPU, memory, disk I/O, database performance, or guaranteed throughput. For busy or business-critical applications, find out which resources are reserved and what happens when the site reaches a limit.

Provider details

1. Azure App Service: best for managed .NET applications

Azure App Service is a managed platform for web applications, services, and APIs, available on Windows or Linux. It is not simply a shared IIS account: you select an App Service plan and its capacity, then deploy one or more applications to it. Microsoft’s pricing page says dedicated tiers charge for the compute instances in the plan regardless of how many apps share them.

It is a strong option when you want to reduce routine server administration, integrate with Azure services, and have platform scaling choices. A Windows plan may suit an IIS-dependent application; a Linux plan may suit cross-platform ASP.NET Core. Free and shared tiers are for experimentation, not a production substitute: Microsoft says they do not carry a production SLA. The cited Windows pricing snapshot showed Basic B1 at $54.75/month, with 1 vCPU, 1.75 GB RAM, and 10 GB storage; actual prices vary by region, agreement, commitment, and configuration.

Do not treat that plan figure as the complete cost of an application. Add the services it actually needs, such as a database, storage, monitoring, networking, backups, or other Azure resources. App Service also offers less operating-system control than a VPS, so verify any native dependency, special IIS module, persistent-filesystem assumption, or long-running worker requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: A strong choice for production teams that value a managed platform and Azure integration. It is not automatically the least expensive choice for a small site. Check Windows App Service pricing.

2. Liquid Web: best managed Windows VPS

Liquid Web’s ASP.NET VPS page lists Windows VPS configurations and states that Windows licensing is included in the displayed configurations. The cited page showed general and memory-oriented ASP.NET VPS options starting at $48/month, including a general configuration listed with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB transfer. A lower $15/month figure appeared elsewhere in the broader page header; do not assume it is the price for the displayed Windows ASP.NET configuration. Confirm the exact product and current quote.

A VPS provides more control than shared hosting and can suit applications needing custom IIS configuration, separate app pools, or Windows services. The cost is substantially above a typical shared plan. “Managed” is not a precise scope of work: ask whether support includes Windows patching, IIS configuration, backup monitoring and restores, security hardening, and application-level troubleshooting. Even a managed server may leave deployment and application errors to your team.

Verdict: Consider it when you need a Windows VPS and want provider assistance, not when your only requirement is inexpensive shared IIS hosting. Review configurations and terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. InterServer: best budget shared Windows option

InterServer’s Windows hosting page advertised an $8/month plan in the cited snapshot. It lists ASP.NET, .NET Core, Classic ASP, SQL Server, Web Deploy, URL Rewrite, Plesk, SQL Server 2019 Express databases, weekly backups, free TLS certificates, migration assistance, and 25 websites. The page also advertises unlimited storage and data transfer; on shared hosting, those terms do not promise dedicated capacity or unlimited performance.

InterServer explicitly says to confirm requirements such as custom modules, dedicated app pools, Full Trust, COM+ objects, ODBC, WebSockets, WCF, Node.js, and Visual Studio deployment behavior. Its page displayed Node.js 16, so a project that depends on a newer Node runtime should verify availability. Likewise, confirm the ASP.NET Core runtime version, SQL database limits, deployment endpoint, and whether the features your application needs are enabled on your specific plan.

Verdict: A practical candidate for conventional, modest Microsoft-stack sites that fit shared-hosting rules. It is not a substitute for a VPS if you need administrator access or persistent worker processes. Check the plan and restrictions.

4. AccuWeb Hosting: best for comparing Windows hosting levels

AccuWeb’s Windows pricing page positions its Windows hosting around Windows Server 2022 and IIS 10, with shared hosting, VPS, and dedicated-server paths. That range can help if you want to compare an entry-level account with a more controllable server option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, the product family alone does not tell you whether a particular plan supports your framework, SQL Server version and database size, Web Deploy, backups, Remote Desktop, or required IIS modules. Confirm whether Windows licensing, control-panel fees, backup retention, and management are included in the plan price. Check the renewal rate and what an upgrade entails before relying on an advertised starting price.

Verdict: A useful middle-ground provider to investigate when you want multiple Windows deployment models. Buy only after the exact plan passes your compatibility and total-cost checks. Compare Windows plans.

5. SmarterASP.NET: best to compare for ASP.NET-focused shared hosting

SmarterASP.NET specializes in Windows and ASP.NET hosting and offers shared hosting as well as VPS-oriented options. That specialization makes it a natural candidate for developers looking for a conventional Microsoft-stack host.

Pay particular attention to the billing term. Third-party comparison coverage has reported low monthly-equivalent pricing and cautioned that the actual price may require a larger prepaid payment. A monthly equivalent is not the same as a month-to-month bill. Before ordering, record the amount due today, the term it buys, renewal pricing, refund terms, and any add-ons. Also verify the current .NET runtime, SQL Server limits, backups, and Visual Studio or Web Deploy workflow directly with the provider; older reviews are not proof of current support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Worth comparing for a specialist shared ASP.NET project if the plan fits and you are comfortable with its actual payment term. Do not label it the cheapest without comparing a current checkout total against equivalent plans. Review current plans and billing terms.

6. Kamatera: best customizable Windows cloud VPS

Kamatera offers a configurable cloud-VPS model that can suit administrators who need control over a Windows Server environment, IIS configuration, custom software, scheduled tasks, or networking. Configuration flexibility can be useful when a shared plan is too restrictive and a fixed managed package does not match the workload.

More control means more responsibility. Confirm whether the quoted configuration includes Windows licensing, and price any SQL Server license, backup service, traffic, control panel, and support separately. A cloud VPS is not automatically managed, backed up, highly available, or secure by default. Budget for setup, patching, monitoring, restore testing, and incident response if your team will run the server.

Verdict: Best suited to technically capable buyers who value customization and can operate a Windows server. For hands-off management, compare a managed VPS or App Service instead. Configure and price a server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare the real cost

Do not compare a low shared-host monthly price directly with a VPS or App Service instance and call one universally cheaper. First align the service model and workload. Then calculate what you will actually pay over the period you expect to use it:

  1. Record the amount due today. Note the billing term, promotional period, and whether a monthly-equivalent price requires prepaid months or years.
  2. Check renewal pricing. Compare the standard renewal rate with the introductory price, and note cancellation and refund terms.
  3. Add licenses and control panels. Ask whether Windows Server, SQL Server, and any Plesk or other control-panel license are included.
  4. Add the supporting services. Include backups, database service, dedicated IP, storage, network traffic, monitoring, migration, and support charges where applicable.
  5. Separate included resources from marketing labels. “Unlimited” storage or bandwidth on a shared plan is not reserved compute capacity. For Azure, account for the App Service plan and other services the application uses.
  6. Check region and tax. Cloud prices and taxes can vary by region, agreement, and configuration; compare like-for-like figures in your currency.

For a compact decision framework, score each candidate against your own needs: Microsoft-stack compatibility (25%), service-model fit (20%), reliability and recovery (15%), deployment and administration (15%), total cost (15%), and support scope (10%). These weights are a starting point, not a provider rating. A provider should not get full compatibility credit merely for advertising “ASP.NET hosting.”

Compatibility checklist before you sign up

Send the host your requirements in writing and get plan-specific answers. Check:

  1. Windows Server and IIS versions on the plan and region you will use.
  2. Supported ASP.NET Framework versions and the exact .NET/ASP.NET Core runtimes.
  3. Whether the required ASP.NET Core Hosting Bundle is installed and maintained.
  4. Whether your application’s in-process or out-of-process hosting mode is supported.
  5. Web Deploy availability, publishing endpoint, and account permissions.
  6. Other supported deployment methods, such as FTP or CI/CD, and whether your workflow is allowed.
  7. URL Rewrite, WebSockets, Windows Authentication, and any required custom IIS modules.
  8. Full Trust or partial Trust restrictions, `web.config` permissions, and filesystem read/write permissions.
  9. App-pool controls, scheduled-task access, background-worker limits, and long-running process policies.
  10. SQL Server version, database count and size limits, connection limits, and SQL Agent availability.
  11. Remote database access, connection-string requirements, licensing, and where the database runs.
  12. Backup frequency, retention, database coverage, restore process, and restore fees.
  13. Support hours, escalation route, and what migration assistance covers.
  14. SMTP and email restrictions, IPv4/IPv6 availability, CDN or caching options, and traffic limits.
  15. All-in price: billing term, renewal, taxes, licenses, control panel, backups, IP, and support.

Keep the host’s answers alongside your deployment notes. If a requirement is mandatory—such as Windows Authentication, WebSockets, or a native module—do not rely on a generic marketing statement; get explicit confirmation for the specific plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common IIS hosting problems and what to check

The application deploys but returns HTTP 500

Common causes include a missing or mismatched ASP.NET Core runtime or Hosting Bundle, an invalid `web.config`, a wrong process path, insufficient filesystem permissions, missing environment variables, or a failed database connection. Check application and IIS logs, confirm that the deployed target matches the installed runtime, validate `web.config`, and verify the app-pool identity can read and write the required paths. Test the published output locally. If the required bundle is host-managed, ask support to confirm it is installed.

Visual Studio or Web Deploy publishing fails

Shared plans may require a provider-specific publishing profile or endpoint, may not enable Web Deploy by default, or may restrict permissions to create or modify an application. Framework support, firewalls, and IP restrictions can also be factors. Do not assume Visual Studio’s default profile will work; request the correct profile and deployment requirements before migrating.

The SQL Server application works locally but not on the host

Compare SQL Server versions, authentication mode, TLS requirements, connection-string format, database quota, remote-access policy, firewall rules, connection limits, and timeout settings. Check collation assumptions and whether the plan offers SQL Agent if your application depends on jobs. “SQL Server included” does not establish that every database feature or workload is available.

Background jobs stop or run inconsistently

Shared hosts may recycle application pools, suspend idle applications, or restrict persistent processes. If you require dependable queues, workers, scheduled jobs, or Windows Services, look for an explicitly supported worker service or consider a VPS, dedicated server, Azure WebJobs, Azure Functions, or another worker-oriented service. Confirm that the chosen service matches the application’s execution model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WebSockets, SignalR, or Windows Authentication does not work

Some shared plans restrict WebSockets or impose proxy limitations; many do not provide the domain integration and configuration required for Windows Authentication. Confirm these features before purchase. If the application depends on them and a shared plan cannot support them, move the decision toward a suitable VPS, dedicated environment, or an appropriately designed managed identity architecture.

Backups, support, and the meaning of “managed”

A weekly backup, an uptime guarantee, and a managed label each need specifics. Ask whether backups include databases as well as files, how many restore points are retained, whether copies are stored separately from production, whether you can download them, and whether restoration is self-service or paid. Test a restore when the service and application are first set up; a backup that has never been restored is not a tested recovery plan.

Likewise, clarify whether the uptime commitment covers network availability, the server, the hosting platform, or your running application. Review exclusions, maintenance windows, and service-credit rules. A provider’s SLA is not an independent measurement of your application’s uptime.

For a managed VPS, establish who patches Windows, configures IIS, monitors backups, hardens the server, and responds to application errors. For a PaaS, identify what Microsoft operates and what remains your responsibility, including application code, deployment, data, access controls, and service configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ASP.NET Core run on Linux?

Often, yes. ASP.NET Core is cross-platform, but check your application’s native dependencies, authentication, hosting mode, and deployment needs. If it has no Windows-specific requirements, Linux hosting may be a viable alternative; test the application and its production configuration before migrating.

Does IIS hosting include SQL Server?

Not necessarily, and a listing for SQL Server does not tell you the database version, size quota, connection limits, SQL Agent availability, remote-access rules, backup coverage, or licensing terms. Verify each item for the specific plan.

Can I deploy an IIS application with Visual Studio?

Possibly. Confirm that the plan enables Web Deploy, provides a compatible publishing profile and endpoint, and grants the permissions your project needs. Shared hosts may require provider-specific settings or restrict parts of the workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I interpret an uptime guarantee?

Treat it as a contractual commitment with defined scope and exclusions, not as measured uptime. Check what service it covers, maintenance exclusions, and whether remedies are service credits.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
