Costco’s return policy can be valuable when you buy an expensive TV, computer, camera, phone, or appliance—but the popular idea that Costco electronics can be returned indefinitely is wrong. In the U.S., many listed electronics must be returned within 90 days, and Costco’s warranty, technical-support, and price-adjustment benefits have separate rules.
Here are the five policies to understand before you buy.
1. Many Costco electronics have a 90-day return limit
Costco’s standard satisfaction guarantee has important exceptions. Its U.S. policy gives members 90 days to return the following categories:

- Televisions and projectors
- Computers and touchscreen tablets
- Smart wearable devices
- Cameras, aerial cameras such as drones, and camcorders
- MP3 players
- Cellular phones
- Specified major appliances
The appliance list includes refrigerators over 10 cubic feet, freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range and under-counter microwaves, range hoods, dishwashers, water heaters, washers, and dryers. Phone returns can also be affected by the carrier’s service contract. The merchandise policy is not necessarily the only rule governing activation, cancellation, restocking, or service charges.
2. The 90-day clock generally starts when you receive the product
Costco says the 90-day period runs from the date the member received the merchandise. That matters because an online order date, shipment date, and delivery date may be different.
- For a Costco.com purchase, save the delivery confirmation and use the received date as the key date.
- For a warehouse purchase, the purchase and receipt dates will usually be the same or close together.
- For a large appliance, delivery may occur weeks after the order, but the 90-day policy still concerns the date you receive it.
Do not leave a TV, laptop, appliance, or camera unopened until the end of the window. Test it promptly, and start a return or support case before the deadline if something is wrong.

Costco’s two-year warranty extension is not universal coverage for everything sold in the electronics department. According to Costco Technical and Warranty Services, the included extension applies to televisions, projectors, computers excluding touchscreen tablets, and specified major appliances.

The extension follows the manufacturer’s warranty terms. For the second year, Costco says it may repair, replace, or refund up to the purchase price. Coverage begins from the warehouse purchase date or the Costco.com delivery date, according to Costco’s warranty-support information.
Do not confuse this warranty with technical support. Costco offers technical assistance for products including TVs, computers, cameras, and printers, but support is not a promise of indefinite free repair or replacement. Common warranty exclusions include data backup, software replacement, physical damage, and liquid damage. Back up and, when appropriate, erase personal data before sending a device for service or returning it.
Optional protection plans can change the coverage picture, but “up to five years” is not automatic. Eligibility and terms vary by product, purchase method, membership level, and plan. Check the Costco warranty calculator and the actual plan terms.
4. A Costco price adjustment is not a competitor price match
Costco does not price-match Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, a manufacturer’s website, or another retailer. A competitor’s lower price does not automatically entitle you to the difference.

Costco may adjust the price of a qualifying Costco purchase when the Costco price falls within 30 days of purchase. Promotional offers can have additional timing and eligibility requirements, so review the current price-adjustment policy.
- Costco.com purchase: Use Costco’s online price-adjustment request process.
- Warehouse purchase: Ask at the Returns counter at the Costco location where you made the purchase.
- Approved online credit: Costco generally says credits are issued to the original payment method within 5–10 business days.
Costco also does not price-match a warehouse price against a Costco.com price. Online prices may include shipping and handling, so the two channels are not necessarily comparable.
For example, if a Costco.com television falls from $899.99 to $799.99 within the qualifying period, you may request a Costco price adjustment. If another retailer sells it for $749.99, Costco’s policy does not require a matching refund.
5. Inspect, test, and document the purchase immediately
The safest way to use Costco’s policies is to treat the first days after purchase or delivery as a testing period.

- Record the purchase or delivery date. Put the 90-day deadline on your calendar.
- Photograph the shipping box before opening it, especially for a TV or major appliance.
- Check the exact model and serial number. Costco may sell retailer-specific configurations or bundles.
- Confirm every accessory is included. Check remotes, stands, cables, batteries, chargers, manuals, and appliance parts.
- Test the major functions. For TVs, check inputs, speakers, Wi-Fi, apps, the remote, and the screen. For computers, check the display, ports, webcam, keyboard, battery, updates, and connectivity.
- Back up important data before troubleshooting, returning, or servicing a computer, phone, tablet, or camera.
- Keep documentation and packaging until the return period has ended and the product is working reliably.
Costco says a receipt or original packaging may not be necessary for an ordinary warehouse return, and members can generally bring returns to any Costco warehouse subject to limitations. Nevertheless, order records, serial numbers, packaging, and delivery photographs are useful for Costco.com returns, freight claims, warranty service, and damage disputes. Online and large-item returns may require different logistics; follow the instructions for that order rather than simply taking an appliance to the warehouse.

The receipt is missing
Ask Costco about the return using the membership and purchase details. Costco says a receipt may not be required for a warehouse return, but online orders, warranty claims, and freight cases can require more documentation.
The item arrived damaged
Photograph the packaging and product, avoid installing a visibly damaged appliance, and contact Costco through the order or delivery channel promptly. Keep all shipping materials until the issue is resolved.

The defect appears after 90 days
The ordinary electronics return window may have ended. Check whether the product has a manufacturer warranty, Costco’s included two-year extension, or an optional protection plan. A warranty claim is different from a no-questions-asked return and can have different remedies and exclusions.

The product contains personal data
Back up files and sign out of accounts before returning or servicing the device. A repair or return may require a reset, and Costco’s warranty information does not promise data backup or software replacement.
Costco versus another retailer: compare the complete deal
Costco may be attractive when you value a defined 90-day return period, warehouse return access, technical support, a possible price adjustment, or the included two-year extension on eligible products. But it is not automatically the best choice.
Another retailer may offer a longer return period, a competitor price-match guarantee, more configurations, open-box options, or easier exchange logistics. Compare the exact model number, bundle, shipping, installation, haul-away, warranty, protection-plan terms, and return deadline—not just the advertised price.
These rules describe Costco U.S. policies. Costco’s terms can differ in Canada and other countries, and policy pages, product eligibility, and carrier requirements can change. Verify the applicable policy for the specific item and order.
