Laptop Mag reported four gaming laptops priced from $499 to $1,499, with advertised savings of $200 to $600. The HP Victus was the budget standout, the HP Omen 16 offered the strongest balance of performance and features, the Asus ROG Strix G16 targeted demanding gamers and creators, and the MSI Katana provided a storage-focused alternative.

The HP Victus was the least expensive laptop in the roundup. Its reported configuration paired an Intel Core i5-13420H processor with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 15.6-inch 1920×1080 display with a 144Hz refresh rate.

At the reported $499 price, this was the clearest value proposition for a student, first-time gaming-laptop buyer, or household that wanted modern RTX features without spending four figures. An RTX 4050 laptop is aimed primarily at 1080p gaming. It should be considered suitable for mainstream games at sensible medium-to-high settings, but it is not the right choice for consistently driving demanding games at very high settings or for high-resolution gaming.
The 144Hz panel is most useful in esports and lighter games where the laptop can produce high frame rates. A demanding game may run well below 144 frames per second, especially at higher settings. RTX features such as ray tracing, DLSS, and frame generation can affect the balance between image quality and performance, but actual results depend on the laptop’s power limits, cooling, drivers, and game settings.
The main financial compromise was storage. A 512GB SSD can fill quickly once Windows and several large games are installed. If an equivalent current listing appears, check whether the SSD can be replaced or whether the laptop has a second M.2 slot before budgeting for an upgrade.
Best for: buyers prioritizing the lowest upfront price and 1080p gaming.
Watch for: a different CPU, 8GB of RAM, a smaller SSD, refurbished condition, or a third-party seller on a replacement listing.

2. HP Omen 16: the best-balanced historical option
The HP Omen 16 was reported at $1,299, or $300 below the source’s stated regular price. Its configuration included an Intel Core i7-14700HX, RTX 4060, 16GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 16.1-inch 2560×1440 display rated at 240Hz with a 3ms response time.
This was the most balanced model in the group. The RTX 4060 provides more graphics headroom than the RTX 4050 models, while the 1TB SSD avoids the immediate storage pressure of the Victus. The processor also gives the Omen more room for CPU-heavy tasks such as video editing, software compilation, and large multitasking workloads.

The QHD display is a meaningful upgrade for games and general desktop work, but the 240Hz specification needs context. An RTX 4060 laptop will not necessarily reach 240 frames per second in demanding games at 2560×1440. The high refresh rate is most valuable in competitive or less demanding titles, while heavier games may require reduced settings or upscaling.
Higher performance also brings costs that are easy to miss in a sale headline. Expect a larger, heavier machine than a basic productivity laptop, more fan noise under load, and substantially better performance when connected to its charger. Battery performance during gaming should not be treated as equivalent to plugged-in performance.
Best for: shoppers who want a durable middle ground between entry-level 1080p gaming and expensive high-end systems.

Pay more only when: you will use the RTX 4060, QHD screen, larger SSD, or stronger processor. A similar current laptop with a newer GPU and a comparable warranty may be better value than an old discounted configuration.
3. Asus ROG Strix G16: the performance-focused choice
The Asus ROG Strix G16 was listed at a historical $1,499, with an advertised $300 saving. Laptop Mag reported a Core i9-13980HX, RTX 4070, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and a 16-inch 2560×1600 display with a 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time. The display was also described as covering 100% of DCI-P3 and receiving Pantone Validation.
This was the strongest option for buyers who wanted high settings at a 1440p-class resolution, a fast panel for competitive games, and additional color capability for creative work. The RTX 4070 is the most capable GPU in this group, and the high-end Core i9 is useful for processor-heavy workloads.
However, an RTX 4070 laptop is not a single fixed-performance product. GPU wattage, cooling design, manufacturer tuning, memory configuration, and the laptop’s plugged-in power profile can materially affect results. The GPU name alone does not establish desktop-equivalent performance, so avoid buying based solely on the “RTX 4070” label.
The premium also has practical trade-offs: a bulky chassis, fan noise during demanding use, limited gaming battery life, and a higher purchase price. Sixteen gigabytes of RAM was adequate for the historical configuration, but creators who routinely work with large projects or many applications should verify whether memory is upgradeable.

Best for: demanding gamers and creators who can justify paying for additional GPU headroom and a higher-quality display.
Skip the premium if: you mainly play esports titles at 1080p or use the laptop for schoolwork and occasional gaming. The cheaper RTX 4050 or RTX 4060 class may provide better value for that workload.

The MSI Katana was reported at $799, advertised as $200 off. Its listed hardware included a Core i7-13620H, RTX 4050, 16GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 15.6-inch 1080p display with a 144Hz refresh rate.
The Katana’s central advantage over the Victus was storage. A 1TB SSD is more practical for a growing game library, and the Core i7 may offer additional processor capacity. For 1080p gaming, however, both laptops were built around the same RTX 4050 tier, so the extra $300 historical price gap was not automatically justified by graphics performance.

For a current purchase, use these categories as a comparison framework rather than assuming the original models or prices are still available. The most important question is the final price for the complete configuration—not the size of the advertised discount.

- Verify the exact GPU. “RTX graphics” is not enough. Confirm whether the listing has an RTX 4050, 4060, 4070, or a different generation, and check the stated GPU power information when available.
- Check RAM and storage. Confirm 8GB versus 16GB RAM and 512GB versus 1TB storage. Ask whether RAM is soldered, whether there is a second memory slot, and whether a second M.2 slot is available.
- Inspect the seller and condition. Walmart Marketplace listings may be sold by third parties and may be new, refurbished, or open-box. Check “sold by” and “shipped by” before checkout.
- Read returns and warranty terms. Confirm the return window, exclusions, restocking terms, manufacturer warranty, and who handles support. Do not treat a protection plan as part of the laptop’s discount.
- Confirm the display and operating system. Check resolution, refresh rate, brightness if listed, keyboard layout, and the Windows edition.
- Compare the model number. Nearly identical product names can hide different CPUs, GPUs, screens, and storage capacities.
- Check delivery details. Shipping estimates, pickup availability, price changes, and stock can change quickly during promotional periods.
Why “save up to $600” needs caution
The phrase “up to $600 off” described the maximum advertised historical saving, not a guarantee that every laptop was discounted by $600. It also does not prove that the comparison price was a long-standing market price. The source’s regular-price comparison could reflect Walmart’s previous price, MSRP, or another temporary reference point.
For that reason, compare the final price with current-generation alternatives, warranty coverage, and the complete specification. A smaller discount on a newer RTX laptop may be a better financial decision than a larger discount on aging stock with weaker upgrade options.
