No single online retailer matches Amazon’s combination of broad selection, marketplace listings, delivery network and Prime benefits. The best alternative depends on what you’re buying: Walmart is a strong starting point for everyday essentials, Best Buy for electronics, eBay for used or hard-to-find goods, and specialists such as Chewy, Etsy and Wayfair for particular categories.
For U.S. shoppers, the practical approach is to choose a store by product, then compare the full cost and check who is actually selling and shipping the item. These picks are recommendations for different shopping needs—not a ranking of which retailer is always cheapest.

1. Walmart: best overall for everyday shopping
Walmart is the closest general-purpose alternative for routine purchases such as pantry staples, cleaning products, toiletries, basic clothing and home goods. Its physical-store network can make pickup a practical option when an item is available nearby, and its online range covers many everyday categories.

Walmart also operates Walmart Marketplace, so a product on Walmart.com is not necessarily sold or shipped by Walmart. Check the seller and fulfillment details on the listing, particularly for branded or expensive items. Inventory, delivery options and pickup availability depend on your location and the specific product.

Listings may use fixed prices, auctions or offers, and condition ranges from new to used. That seller-and-item variety makes eBay a different kind of alternative from a conventional retailer.

3. Target: best for home basics, beauty, apparel and pickup
Target is a useful alternative for home décor, cleaning supplies, beauty products, clothing, toys, school supplies and gifts. Its more curated assortment and physical stores can make it a convenient choice when you want mainstream products and a practical pickup or return option. Target Circle promotions may affect the final price for shoppers who use them.
Target’s online catalog also includes Target Plus listings from outside sellers. Check the listing’s seller and terms instead of assuming every item has the same fulfillment or return experience. Store stock can vary, and the selection is not as deep for obscure technical products or replacement parts as a marketplace with specialist sellers.

4. Best Buy: best for electronics and appliances
For laptops, TVs, cameras, gaming equipment, appliances and related accessories, Best Buy offers a specialist alternative to a general marketplace. Its product focus, store pickup and available services such as installation or trade-ins can matter more than a small difference in the listed price. Some products are sold as open-box or refurbished, so read the condition and coverage details before treating them as equivalent to new.
Consider the whole purchase: installation, delivery, protection plans and required accessories can change the cost substantially. Add-on services are useful when you need them, but they are not automatically a good value. Check the seller and fulfillment terms for any listing that is not clearly sold by Best Buy.
Best fit: Higher-value electronics or appliances where in-person support, setup or trade-in options are relevant. Main caution: Don’t pay for a service plan or accessory bundle you do not need.
5. Costco: best for bulk buying and selected big purchases
Costco can be a good Amazon alternative for bulk groceries and household consumables, private-label goods and selected appliances, furniture, computers, tires and mattresses. Buying larger packs can lower the per-unit cost, but only if your household will use them before they expire and you have room to store them. The online assortment may differ from what is available in a warehouse.
Include the membership fee in your comparison. Estimate how often you would shop, what you would genuinely save, and whether rewards or services apply to the purchases you plan to make. Factor in delivery, oversized-item costs and the risk of buying more than you need. Membership terms and prices can change; check Costco’s current membership information instead of relying on an older break-even calculation.
Best fit: Households that regularly use bulk quantities or are comparing a high-value purchase. Main caution: A low unit price is not a saving if you waste the extra quantity or pay for a membership you seldom use.
6. Etsy: best for handmade, personalized and vintage goods
Etsy is worth checking for custom gifts, jewelry, art, craft supplies, wedding items, personalized décor and vintage finds. Its strength is access to independent sellers and distinctive products—not uniform fulfillment or a promise of lower prices. Buyers can often communicate with a maker, which is helpful when dimensions, wording or customization need to be confirmed.

Compare prices with local pet shops, warehouse clubs and veterinary sources; Chewy is convenient, but it is not automatically the lowest-cost route. For medication, check prescription requirements and confirm that the product and dosage are correct. Review scheduled-order timing and substitution settings so an automatic reorder does not deliver the wrong item or more than you need.

Best fit: Pet households that value a specialized selection and reliable replenishment. Main caution: Confirm medication details and recurring-order settings.
8. Wayfair: best for furniture and home décor
Wayfair offers extensive browsing across furniture, rugs, lighting, patio products and décor. Filters for dimensions, style, color, material and room can be useful when furnishing a space, and the catalog is more focused on home furnishings than Amazon’s general assortment.
Measure the room and the route into it—including doors, stairs and elevators—before ordering. Check complete product dimensions, materials, assembly requirements and reviews that mention durability or fit. Confirm the delivery method, whether assembly is included and what a return would cost. For large items, the lowest displayed product price may not reflect the full delivered cost.
Best fit: Browsing a wide range of home furnishings and comparing styles. Main caution: Large-item delivery and returns can be more complicated than returning a small parcel.

For tools, hardware, lumber, paint, plumbing and electrical supplies, appliances, outdoor equipment and repair parts, start with The Home Depot or Lowe’s. Online ordering paired with local inventory and pickup can be useful when a repair is urgent or you need materials for a project. A store’s product information and project-oriented services can also help when choosing compatible items.

Check the exact model and specifications, especially for parts that must fit an existing system. Bulky materials may have different delivery costs and arrangements from ordinary parcels. Some online listings may have distinct seller or special-order terms, so confirm who is supplying the item and when it is expected to arrive.
Best fit: Project supplies, repair parts and products you may need locally. Main caution: Verify compatibility and delivery terms before ordering.
10. Direct-from-brand stores and Shop: best for authenticity and support
When authenticity, customization, product registration, replacement parts or warranty support matter, buying from the manufacturer can be the simplest route. Examples include Apple, Dell, HP, LEGO, Nike and Patagonia. Buying from a brand’s own store can clarify who is supplying the product and where to seek support, though it does not guarantee the lowest price or the most generous return terms.
Shop can help shoppers discover and check out with participating independent brands, but it is not one universal retailer with Amazon-like inventory. For any direct purchase, review shipping, return and warranty terms before paying. A manufacturer’s website alone does not substantiate claims about where a product was made or how it was produced.
Best fit: Branded, high-value or customizable products where a clear route to the manufacturer matters. Main caution: Direct sales may cost more or ship more slowly than another retailer.

How to compare prices fairly
Compare the cost of getting the right item—not just the number beside the product photo. A useful estimate is:
Delivered total = item price + shipping + applicable membership cost + taxes + required accessories − discounts − rewards
Then check whether you are comparing like with like: new against new, or refurbished against refurbished; the same model and included accessories; the same delivery speed; and a return and warranty arrangement you would actually accept. Also account for pickup travel, minimum order requirements, subscription discounts and return shipping where relevant. Tax and availability depend on your location and order.

There is no reliable universal “cheapest Amazon alternative.” A comparison can produce different winners depending on the products, date, sale status, seller and methodology. For example, Kiplinger reported on a broad comparison of roughly 14,000 non-sale items that found Amazon ahead of Walmart and several other retailers in that basket. That result illustrates why it is unsafe to assume Walmart—or any other store—always costs less.
How to reduce marketplace and product risk
A retailer’s name at the top of a page does not always mean it sold, stored or shipped the item. Walmart Marketplace, eBay, Etsy and Target Plus are examples of platforms where independent sellers can be involved; some listings at other retailers can also carry distinct seller or fulfillment terms. Before you order, inspect:
- Sold by and shipped by: Identify the seller and fulfillment party, rather than relying on the retailer’s logo.
- Condition: Distinguish new, used, refurbished, open-box and clearance. These labels are not interchangeable, and a seller’s description should specify the item’s condition.
- Return terms: Check the deadline, return shipping, exclusions and whether the seller or retailer handles the return.
- Warranty: Confirm who backs it and whether the seller is authorized if manufacturer coverage matters.
- Model and specifications: Match the exact model number, size, compatibility and included accessories.
- Reviews and delivery: Read recent, relevant feedback and check the estimated date for that specific listing and address.
For expensive, regulated or safety-sensitive products—including electronics, cosmetics, supplements, batteries and medical products—prefer the manufacturer or a clearly authorized seller when practical. Treat a price far below comparable listings as a reason to check details, not proof of a problem. Use the platform’s payment and dispute process rather than taking a transaction off-site.

Not necessarily. A mix of free accounts, store pickup and one specialist’s recurring-order program may serve you better than paying for another broad membership. Walmart+ may be relevant if you regularly use Walmart’s delivery, grocery or store-linked services; Costco may make sense for bulk and high-value purchases; Chewy Autoship may help with predictable pet needs. Target Circle and pickup can be useful without treating them as a full Prime substitute. Benefits and eligibility can change, so check each program’s current terms.
Use a simple household calculation before enrolling:
- List the services and benefits you would actually use—not every advertised perk.
- Estimate realistic annual savings on purchases you would make anyway.
- Subtract the membership fee and any delivery or service charges.
- Account for overlap with memberships you already pay for.
- Reassess after a few months; cancel if the benefit is mostly theoretical.
Prime is more than a shipping program, and no single retailer listed here duplicates all of its shopping, marketplace and additional benefits. Compare memberships on household value, not on a headline benefit alone. Bottom line
Build a small rotation of retailers instead of looking for one universal Amazon replacement: Walmart or Target for many basics, Best Buy for electronics, eBay for used or rare items, Costco for suitable bulk purchases, and category specialists or brand stores when their expertise, selection or support matters. For every order, compare the delivered total and check the seller, condition, returns and warranty. That is a more dependable way to find value than assuming any one alternative is always cheaper or safer.
