What ImpôtExpert does

ImpôtExpert is designed for Canadian personal income-tax filing, covering employment, retirement, rental, investment and self-employment income through a library of more than 230 forms and information slips.

Its Pre-fill my return feature brings most CRA form data into the return automatically. It can also test tax-saving scenarios and work out applicable credits and pension-income splitting.

Fees and plans

ImpôtExpert Online has a one-time charge per return, payable when the return is transmitted. The spouse and each additional dependent have separate listed charges, plus applicable taxes. The plan includes a free trial and is free for eligible taxpayers.

The online eligible-taxpayer plan has no listed price and applies at total income of $20,000. First-family-member, spouse and dependent online plans also have no listed prices. Premium has no listed individual or family price; it adds priority phone, chat and email support.

Windows 4 is sold as a one-time four-return package, with four additional returns for taxpayers with modest income. Windows 12 provides 12 returns plus four additional modest-income returns. Premium is priced per individual return or as a family option. Windows plans require Windows 11.

Where it runs

ImpôtExpert Online runs in a web browser without a download or installation. It is also listed with mobile access, but the published facts do not specify separate iPhone or Android functions.

The Windows edition is installed on a Windows computer and keeps tax files there. The download page requires Windows 11 and lists 250 MB of available disk space, while online files remain on the provider’s servers.

Protection, as published

The manufacturer says tax data is protected by several layers on Canadian servers, using encryption technologies comparable to those used by Canadian banks.

Both Windows and Online are described as ImpôtNet-approved for electronic transmission to the CRA and Revenu Québec. The published facts do not state a licence, deposit protection, two-factor sign-in or dispute process.

Strengths

The software accommodates Canadian returns involving employment, retirement, self-employment, investments and rental income. Its catalogue contains more than 230 forms, and most CRA form data can be imported.

Online copies of returns from the last nine years. Phone and email support are free, while Premium adds priority support and messaging.

Catches and limits

Online charges are per declaration, and spouse, dependent and applicable-tax amounts can add to the bill.

Windows requires Windows 11 and local storage. ImpôtNet certification does not support form T1273 for the Agri-stability and Agri-investment programs.

Who may want another tool

Anyone whose return requires T1273 would need a product that supports that form, because ImpôtExpert does not.

Several family and eligibility plans do not show a price, so the total cost may need to be confirmed before filing.

Verdict

ImpôtExpert fits Canadian filers whose returns range from simple to self-employed, investment or rental income. Its online and Windows editions cover electronic transmission, and eligible taxpayers may file at no charge. The published prices make the basic online and Windows bundles understandable, but some family and eligibility plans have no stated amount. Windows users also need a current operating system, and anyone using T1273 needs a different option.
