Amazon announced the original Kindle Fire on September 28, 2011, at a U.S. launch price of $199. Amazon listed November 15, 2011, as the planned ship and retail-availability date, opened preorders immediately, and then announced that initial shipments began one day early, on November 14. The 7-inch, Wi-Fi-only tablet had an IPS color display, 8GB of storage, a dual-core processor and Amazon’s heavily customized Android-based software with the Silk browser.

The $199 figure and specifications below are historical launch information, not a current price or recommendation for a supported Amazon tablet.

What Amazon announced

Amazon presented the Kindle Fire as a new kind of Kindle rather than an e-ink reader. It was a compact color tablet intended for books, magazines, newspapers, video, music, apps, games and web browsing. The strategy put Amazon’s store and cloud services at the center of the experience: customers could buy or consume content through Amazon, synchronize it with Whispersync and use the tablet as a gateway to the company’s growing digital ecosystem.

Amazon advertised access to more than 18 million movies, television shows, songs, books, magazines, apps and games at launch. That was a September 2011 promotional figure, not a current catalog count. The announcement also included a free introductory month of Amazon Prime with purchase.

What the $199 tablet could do

Books and periodicals

The LCD screen displayed Kindle books, magazines and newspapers in color. That made the Fire materially different from the black-and-white e-ink Kindles Amazon announced at the same event.

Video, music and games

Users could stream or download Amazon Instant Video content, play music from Amazon MP3, and run apps and games supplied through Amazon’s app ecosystem. Amazon later described the service mix using period figures of more than 100,000 movies and television shows and more than 17 million songs; those numbers were historical claims in the November 2011 shipping announcement.

Cloud and synchronization

Whispersync kept supported books and other content synchronized, while Amazon Cloud services stored Amazon digital purchases. References to cloud storage should not be read as a promise of unlimited storage for every kind of personal file.

Silk web browsing

Amazon Silk was marketed as a cloud-accelerated browser. Amazon said it could use computing resources from Amazon Web Services to help accelerate mobile browsing. The experience was designed around Amazon’s services rather than around a standard Google-certified Android tablet.

What was missing

  • No cellular modem or 3G option, so internet access depended on Wi-Fi.
  • No camera, microphone or GPS in the reported launch specifications.
  • Only 8GB of internal storage, with no advertised memory-card expansion in the launch specification list.
  • No advertised Google Android Market or standard Google application package; the software emphasized Amazon’s own storefront and services.
  • A smaller screen and narrower hardware feature set than larger tablets such as the iPad.

These omissions were part of the cost and product-positioning trade-off. The Fire targeted media consumption and Amazon customers, not laptop replacement or a fully open Android experience.

Release timeline and retail availability

  1. September 28, 2011: Amazon announced the Kindle Fire and began accepting U.S. preorders at $199.
  2. November 14, 2011: Amazon said it had started shipping some Kindle Fire units one day ahead of schedule.
  3. November 15, 2011: This remained the announced ship and retail-availability date. Amazon also said retailers including Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Staples, Sam’s Club, RadioShack, Office Depot and Sam’s Club would carry the new Kindle family through more than 16,000 U.S. retail locations, as described in its retail announcement.

That distinction explains why historical articles use both November 14 and November 15: the former marks the early-shipping announcement, while the latter was the planned public release date.

Kindle Fire versus an iPad

The Fire’s significance was its price and ecosystem strategy, not specification-for-specification parity with the iPad. At $199 it sat far below the contemporary iPad price range and offered a lighter, smaller way to consume Amazon media. The iPad had a larger display and a broader hardware feature set. Calling the Fire an “iPad killer” overstated the comparison; it was better understood as a lower-cost, Amazon-centered alternative for readers and media users.

Low upfront cost, color magazines, Amazon video and music, and a compact Wi-Fi tablet Cellular data, navigation, photography, voice input, expandable storage or a conventional Google Android experience

Why the launch mattered

Amazon entered the tablet market by combining inexpensive hardware with content, Prime, app sales and cloud services. That model let the company compete on the total customer relationship rather than on premium hardware alone. The original Fire also broadened the Kindle name from an e-reader brand into a family that included a general-purpose color media tablet.

Do not confuse it with later Fire tablets

The 2011 Kindle Fire is not the same product as the Kindle Fire HD family announced in September 2012. The later $199 Kindle Fire HD had different display, audio, wireless, processor and storage specifications; see Amazon’s 2012 Kindle Fire HD announcement. Later devices were also marketed as Fire tablets rather than simply as the original Kindle Fire.

As of August 18, 2026, the original model should be treated as a historical device. The launch sources do not establish current retail availability, firmware support, resale value or compatibility with modern apps and streaming services. Anyone considering a used unit would need to verify those issues separately.

The Bottom Line

The original Kindle Fire was Amazon’s $199, 7-inch Wi-Fi media tablet announced on September 28, 2011. November 15 was the planned release date, but Amazon began shipping units on November 14. Its low price came with clear limits: 8GB of storage, no cellular service, camera, microphone or GPS, and software built around Amazon rather than standard Google Android.
