Yes. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is farmed commercially, with Norway currently the clearest example. Norway recorded 19,473 tonnes of cod aquaculture sales in 2025, up from 13,342 tonnes in 2024. That is a 46% increase, but cod still represented only about 1% of Norway’s 1,884,716 tonnes of total aquaculture sales by volume.
Whether farmed cod is sustainable is a separate question. The answer depends on the farm’s feed, mortality and disease record, escape controls, effects on wild cod, energy use, transport and certification. Existing evidence supports a growing but still small market—not a blanket claim that farmed cod is automatically better than wild-caught cod.
What “farmed cod” means
Commercial cod farming generally refers to Atlantic cod raised from hatchery-produced juveniles in land-based facilities and marine net pens. Fish are fed formulated diets, monitored for growth and health, and harvested at a planned size. The production model is intended to provide a more predictable supply than a fishery whose landings vary with quotas, weather and seasonal availability.
Atlantic cod is different from other fish sold as “cod,” such as Pacific cod or haddock. Farming claims, certification and environmental performance must therefore be checked for the species and producer named on a specific product.

How large is the cod-farming market?

These are Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries sales figures for 2025, published on 28 May 2026, rather than forecasts. The growth rate is substantial, but it starts from a small base compared with salmon and Norway’s other farmed species.
What one producer’s results do—and do not—prove
Norcod reported 8,333 tonnes harvested and NOK 397 million in revenue for 2024. It reported a 7,723-tonne harvest for 2025 and said extraordinary mortality at one site led to an early harvest. Norcod also said its farmed cod represented almost 30% of Norway’s fresh-cod export volume in 2024. Those are company-reported figures and a company-reported market share; they demonstrate commercial activity, not industry-wide profitability or a typical farm outcome.

These FAO numbers describe aquaculture overall. They establish the sector’s scale and food role, but they cannot show that cod farming has the same environmental profile as other species.

Where sustainability risks arise
Escapes and spawning with wild cod
Norway’s government identifies escaped farmed cod and farmed cod spawning in net pens as the primary genetic-interaction risks for wild cod. Escaped or spawning fish could alter the genetic makeup of local populations. Government assessments also discuss possible changes in wild cod migration, behavior, physiology and reproduction, with consequences for survival, growth and recruitment.
Norway clarified the prohibition on farming cod in wild-cod spawning areas and spawning fields through a regulatory amendment in winter 2024. Site location and compliance with that rule are therefore central to any sustainability assessment.
Premature maturation
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council’s cod scope-extension paper, issued and reviewed on 10 April 2025, says Atlantic cod can mature before reaching the preferred 3-kilogram slaughter weight. Early maturation can reduce growth and feed efficiency and affect flesh quality. It can also create a route for fertilized eggs to enter surrounding waters, which is relevant to hybridization risk.

The paper describes LED lighting as one method used to delay maturation, while noting animal-welfare concerns. It also discusses all-female production as a possible alternative. These are research and industry approaches described by ASC, not conditions that occur identically on every farm.

ASC reports that producer communications from July 2024 described cod diets containing more than 35% fishmeal and 8–13% fish oil. Those figures should be treated as reported formulations from the cited producers, not a universal current recipe for all cod farms.
The same paper discusses trials replacing marine ingredients with amphipod meal or algae. In the cited studies, those substitutions reduced growth and feed intake. Feed origin, fishery certification for marine ingredients and the performance of alternatives should therefore be assessed farm by farm.

Disease, temperature and welfare
ASC says cod are vaccinated twice before transfer to sea and highlights Francisella as a disease concern, particularly as water temperatures rise. Disease outbreaks can increase mortality, require treatment and affect the resource use per kilogram of fish sold. Stocking density, biosecurity, treatment records and mortality data are more informative than a generic “farmed” label.
Is farmed cod more sustainable than wild cod?
Current evidence does not support a universal winner. A fair comparison must use a defined farm and a defined fishery, then examine the same functional unit—such as one kilogram of edible fish at the farm gate or retailer.

The sources available for this article do not provide an independently verified, cod-specific life-cycle assessment. Any carbon or sustainability comparison should state its geography, production system, date and measurement boundary rather than applying a sector-wide average.

What could drive future market potential?
Potential advantages
- More regular supply: A farm can schedule harvests instead of relying entirely on fishing seasons and quota timing.
- Fresh-market positioning: Norcod markets its Snow Cod brand as a premium, year-round product. That is the company’s positioning, not independent consumer research.
- Existing demand: Norcod’s reported harvests and Norway’s rising official sales show that buyers are purchasing farmed cod.
- Product consistency: Controlled harvest timing can support predictable size, grading and freshness, if biological performance remains stable.
Constraints investors and buyers should watch
- Premature maturation can lower growth, feed efficiency and flesh quality.
- Francisella and other diseases can raise mortality and operating costs, especially during warmer conditions.
- Extraordinary mortality and early harvest, as reported by Norcod for one 2025 site, show that operational risk remains material.
- Marine-ingredient dependence creates feed-cost and sustainability exposure.
- Escapes, spawning and regulatory restrictions can limit suitable sites and increase compliance costs.
- Rapid sales growth does not establish sustained margins, long-run profitability or a predictable future market size.
How to evaluate a farmed-cod claim
- Identify the species and origin. Confirm that the label refers to Atlantic cod and states the farming country or facility.
- Check the production claim. “Farmed,” “responsibly farmed” and “certified” are not interchangeable. Look for the named certification and verify that it covers the specific producer and product.
- Ask about traceability. A retailer should be able to identify the producer, harvest area or farm and processing location.
- Look for current performance information. Useful indicators include mortality, disease events, escape reporting, feed composition and harvest size.
- Compare the alternative fairly. For wild cod, check the fishery, gear, stock status and catch location rather than assuming every wild product has the same footprint.
- Separate availability from sustainability. A generic frozen-cod listing may be wild-caught; retailer inventory, origin and certification must be checked on the actual listing.
What the evidence supports
Farmed Atlantic cod is a real and expanding commercial activity, led by Norway, but it remains a small part of that country’s aquaculture industry. The market opportunity is credible because farms can offer planned, fresh supply and buyers are already purchasing the product. The business case is still conditional on controlling mortality, maturation, disease, feed costs and regulatory risks.
Sustainability should be judged at the level of a specific farm and a specific wild fishery. Without comparable data on feed, health, escapes, wild-stock interactions, energy, transport and habitat effects, neither “farmed cod is sustainable” nor “wild cod is always better” is a defensible general rule.
