AIB “Connection error”: Is the App or Internet Banking Down?

Short answer: “[U: Connection error]” does not confirm that AIB is down. It can reflect an AIB service or authentication issue, or a problem with your connection, phone, app or browser. The available outage-report signal is too old to establish AIB’s status now, so check AIB’s own channels and Downdetector, then compare the app with Internet Banking and try another connection.

Status on 28 September 2026: A current AIB outage or maintenance notice has not been verified for this article, and there is no verified live Downdetector reading. The AIB status is therefore unconfirmed—not confirmed working and not confirmed down. Check the linked sources again before retrying an urgent transaction.

How to tell whether AIB is down

Check the affected service rather than treating every access problem as an AIB-wide outage. AIB’s public website, Internet Banking login, mobile app, phone approval and payment processing can fail separately. A card or ATM problem may also be unrelated to online banking.

  1. Look for an AIB update. Check AIB’s official website and support channels for a service or maintenance notice. A notice about one feature does not necessarily mean the app, login and payments are all affected.
  2. Check AIB reports on Downdetector. Its AIB page groups reports under categories including App, Login, Mobile Banking, Online Banking, Website and Funds Transfer. Downdetector is based on user reports, not an official AIB status feed; its incident signal rises when reports are significantly above the usual level for that time. A “no current problems” label cannot prove every customer can sign in.
  3. Compare channels. If the app fails, try Internet Banking. If the public AIB site loads but the banking login does not, that points to a login or banking-service issue rather than the whole public website being unavailable. If both app and website fail, an AIB-side service or authentication issue becomes more plausible, but it is not proven.
  4. Compare connections. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try another website. A failure only on one network suggests a local connection, DNS, VPN or filtering issue; it is a clue, not a diagnosis.

If the app and website fail in the same way over different connections, repeated app reinstalls are unlikely to help until the service or authentication issue changes. Check AIB updates and use a fallback channel instead.

What “[U: Connection error]” can mean

The message is generic: on its own, it does not identify a cause. It may arise from AIB’s service or authentication systems, an unstable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection, VPN or network filtering, an outdated app or operating system, incorrect phone time, a browser handoff problem, or app registration and security checks. It can also affect just one platform or feature.

Use the pattern of failures to narrow it down:

  • Only the app fails: check its updates, phone compatibility, date and time, and—on iPhone—Focus settings. On some Android devices, the default browser can affect the app’s sign-in handoff.
  • Only Internet Banking fails: try a current browser, another connection, and check that JavaScript and cookies are enabled. If the public site loads but banking login does not, the problem may be confined to the banking service.
  • Website login reaches phone approval, but approval fails: check app registration, notifications and connectivity. An authentication-service issue is also possible. Do not approve a login you did not initiate or share an authentication code.
  • The account is visible but one payment or transfer fails: this does not establish that all of AIB is down or that the transaction failed. Check its status before attempting it again.
  • A card or ATM transaction fails: that is not necessarily connected to the app or Internet Banking. Use AIB’s appropriate support route if the card issue is urgent.

Try these fixes in order

Start with low-risk checks. If reports or AIB updates suggest a wider incident, skip app resets and use a fallback; a local reinstall cannot resolve a server-side outage.

  1. Check for a wider problem. Look for an AIB notice and recent AIB reports on Downdetector. Note whether the issue is app-only, login, transfers or more than one service.
  2. Test another connection. Switch Wi-Fi and mobile data, and temporarily turn off a VPN, private DNS, ad-blocking network profile or corporate security filter if you use one. Re-enable protections afterward; do not install unknown software or broadly weaken device security.
  3. Close and reopen the app. Force-close it, reopen it and try once. If it fails before authentication, avoid repeatedly entering credentials.
  4. Update the app and phone software. Check the official app store for an AIB update and install available operating-system updates. AIB’s login-help page associates the new app with version 26.6.23 and higher; app rollouts and minimum requirements can change, so consult AIB’s current guidance rather than treating that version as a permanent requirement. See AIB mobile-banking login help.
  5. Set the phone clock automatically. AIB identifies incorrect date and time as a possible login problem. On iPhone, go to Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically. On Android, go to Settings → General Management → Date & Time → Automatic date & time; menu names can vary by manufacturer.
  6. Check iPhone Focus. Go to Settings → Focus and check whether the relevant Focus mode restricts AIB Mobile. AIB says Focus Mode can prevent some app services from working; this does not mean it explains every login failure. Details are in AIB’s login guidance.
  7. Check the Android default browser if sign-in handoff fails. On some Samsung and Huawei devices, AIB recommends setting Chrome as the default: Settings → Apps → three-dot menu or Manage Apps → Default apps → Browser app → Chrome. If Chrome is absent, install or update it through Google Play, then set it as default. Menus vary; see AIB’s app troubleshooting steps.
  8. Restart the phone. Then retry once over the connection that worked for other sites.
  9. Reinstall only if the problem appears app-specific. AIB recommends deleting and reinstalling for certain login or security-update problems. Reinstallation requires you to enrol for Strong Customer Authentication again, so it can add setup work and will not fix a wider AIB outage. Follow AIB’s instructions at mobile-app troubleshooting.

Check browser and device compatibility

AIB’s technical-help page calls for a current Chrome or Firefox browser, JavaScript and cookies enabled, and modern encryption support. Its page also lists Internet Explorer 11, but that is legacy browser guidance; do not choose it over a current supported browser. The technical page is at AIB system settings and technical help.

AIB’s login-help page lists iOS 15.1 and Android 10 as minimum mobile-app operating systems and says a phone unable to update to those versions cannot use the app; Internet Banking or Phone Banking may be alternatives. These requirements can change. Check AIB’s current login guidance before relying on them.

If Google Play says the device is incompatible

AIB says incompatibility can relate to an old Android version, the device’s security status, recent downloads or a Google Play Protect warning. Try these steps:

  1. Install available Android updates and restart the phone.
  2. Open Google Play Store and check for an AIB app update.
  3. Run a Google Play Protect scan.
  4. If the device remains unsupported, use Internet Banking or Phone Banking if available. Do not download an AIB app APK from an unofficial site.

See AIB’s guidance for accessing the app on a new phone.

What to do if both app and website are failing

Prioritise confirming the scope and using another channel instead of repeatedly changing the app. Internet Banking may depend on the same authentication service, so it can fail alongside the app; Phone Banking, an ATM or a branch may still be usable depending on which service is affected.

  • For balances or available funds: AIB lists the app, Internet Banking, Phone Banking, branch Quick Banking areas and AIB ATMs as options. An ATM is useful for some balance information, not every account task. See AIB’s balance and funds guidance.
  • For an urgent payment: contact the recipient or biller if a deadline is close, and ask AIB how to establish whether a transaction is pending, rejected or duplicated.
  • For a card emergency or suspicious activity: contact AIB promptly through a verified channel rather than waiting for app access to return.

If a payment timed out or showed an error

An error screen or missing confirmation does not prove that a payment failed. Before retrying, check whether it appears in your transaction activity or pending transactions through an available channel. Repeated submissions can create a duplicate if the first request was accepted but its confirmation did not reach you.

  1. Record when you attempted the payment and what the screen said.
  2. If taking a screenshot, hide balances, full account numbers, card details, PACs and one-time passcodes. A screenshot records the error but does not prove the payment failed.
  3. Check transaction activity later or ask AIB to confirm the payment’s status before submitting it again.
  4. If a deadline is imminent, contact the recipient or biller as well as AIB.

Contact AIB safely

For Republic of Ireland personal customers, AIB lists 0818 724 724, or +353 1 771 2424 from outside Ireland. Its contact page lists Phone & Internet Banking hours as Monday–Sunday, 09:00–17:00; this is not a 24-hour technical-support line. For a technical problem logging into online or mobile banking, AIB says to press 2. See AIB contact details.

Have your eight-digit Registration Number and five-digit PAC available if applicable. Do not disclose your PAC, one-time passcode, card-reader code or Digipass code to someone contacting you unexpectedly. AIB also lists WebChat and support through @AskAIB; its listed social-support hours are Monday–Friday 09:00–20:00 and weekends 09:00–17:00.

If you have a new phone and still have your old one, AIB says you can manage registered devices within the app. If the old phone is unavailable, AIB directs customers to call the numbers above. See its new-phone guidance.

Watch for fake AIB outage messages

A connection error is not evidence that your account has been compromised. But scammers may exploit an outage with messages claiming to restore access or protect your money. AIB says it will not text a link asking you to log in, tell you to move money to a “safe” or third-party account, request one-time or card-reader codes during unsolicited contact, ask you to install software or grant remote access, or tell you not to log in for several days while it fixes a problem. Read AIB’s security guidance.

If you see an unrecognised transaction or suspect fraud, contact AIB immediately at 0818 724 724 or +353 1 771 2424 from outside Ireland. AIB also lists these numbers in its security-centre contact guidance. Use contact details you have verified yourself, not a number or link in an unexpected message.
