Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced a proposed one-year partnership with xAI on May 28, 2025, describing $300 million in cash and equity for Telegram plus a share of subscription revenue. Elon Musk soon said no deal had been signed. The announcement therefore documented an agreement in principle—not proof that a definitive contract was completed or that Grok became a fully deployed Telegram feature.
What Durov announced
Durov said xAI would bring Grok to Telegram’s user base and integrate it across Telegram applications. The proposed arrangement combined an initial payment, equity and a subscription-revenue share. Telegram’s own FAQ says the service has more than 1 billion active users, but that audience figure does not establish that every user would have received Grok or received it at the same time.
Durov’s announcement is the source of the headline figure and the stated commercial terms. Contemporary reporting also described the arrangement as a one-year partnership with a rollout planned for summer 2025.

Why “inked” overstates what was confirmed
Musk publicly replied that “No deal has been signed.” Durov then said the companies had agreed in principle and that formalities remained. The public exchange is documented in Techmeme’s compilation.
That distinction matters financially. A CEO’s announcement of proposed economics is evidence of what was represented publicly; it is not the same as a signed definitive agreement, completed payment or issued equity. The public information cited here does not establish that the $300 million transaction closed on the described terms. Nor does it establish a definite start or end date for the nominal one-year term. If it had started on May 28, 2025, a year would have elapsed around May 28, 2026, but the start date was not confirmed.

What “Grok inside Telegram” could have meant
The announcement pointed to distribution and integration, but did not publish a technical specification. “Inside Telegram” could describe materially different experiences, and the announcement did not establish which one was intended.
- A dedicated bot, where a user deliberately sends messages to an assistant.
- A native assistant or inline tool available while writing messages.
- An assistant added to groups or channels, potentially with administrator controls.
- A mini app or subscription checkout that connects Telegram users to xAI services.
These are examples of possible product designs, not confirmed features. The announcement did not say whether access would be free, tied to Telegram Premium, sold as a separate xAI subscription, or require an xAI account. It also did not specify supported Telegram apps, geographic availability, or whether private chats, groups, channels or Secret Chats would be supported.
Did the integration launch?
The official materials cited here do not clearly confirm a continuing, fully deployed Grok-Telegram integration. xAI’s Grok overview describes access through the web, iOS, Android and X, without listing Telegram as an official access channel; its status page likewise does not establish Telegram as a current service. Telegram’s official product-evolution page describes AI-assisted text translation and transformation, but does not identify Grok or xAI as the provider.
This is not proof that no limited test, temporary feature or regional release ever occurred. It means the announcement and the cited official product descriptions are not enough to verify that the promised integration became an ongoing product. Telegram’s own AI features should not be attributed to Grok without an explicit provider statement.

What users would need to know about privacy
Telegram’s privacy protections vary by chat type; not every conversation uses the same end-to-end encryption model. An AI assistant also has to receive the content it analyzes in some form. Without integration documentation, users cannot determine from the announcement whether prompts or attachments would be processed by Telegram, xAI or both, or what retention and model-training rules would apply.

Telegram’s current description of an isolated and encrypted environment for its own AI functions does not by itself establish that a proposed xAI feature would have the same design or protections.

For any AI assistant offered in Telegram, check that it is an official feature, read its specific privacy notice, and avoid submitting confidential messages, documents or images until the data path and retention terms are clear. A third-party bot is not equivalent to an official Telegram-xAI integration: its operator may receive messages sent to it and may set different storage and privacy practices.

Telegram’s potential upside
The reported structure offered Telegram more than a distribution fee: cash and equity up front, plus a share of qualifying subscription sales through its channel. Strategically, a recognizable assistant could add a paid service, encourage engagement and help Telegram compete with platforms building AI into messaging. Those are plausible business benefits, not confirmed statements of either company’s internal rationale. Telegram says Premium helps support the service and unlocks additional features, but the proposed announcement did not say Grok would be included with Premium.
xAI’s potential upside
For xAI, Telegram could have provided a large audience beyond X and a new route to subscription customers. That distribution could be valuable, but the arrangement’s practical economics depended on conversion, billing rules and product use—none of which was quantified in the announcement. The 50% share applied to xAI subscriptions sold through Telegram as described by Durov, not to all Grok or xAI revenue.
The risks on both sides
- Telegram could face user concern over external processing, disputes over subscription attribution, and reputational exposure to Grok’s output.
- xAI could incur infrastructure and moderation costs, while accommodating Telegram’s different privacy and product architecture.
- A one-year term could function as a limited distribution experiment, but the announcement did not say it was a pilot or that it would renew.
Where to get Grok or build a Telegram AI workflow
The cited xAI documentation lists Grok access through its own web and mobile products; consult the official overview for current availability. The available materials do not establish a Telegram-specific Grok offer or current price. Telegram Premium is described in the Telegram FAQ, but do not assume it includes Grok.
Developers can review the xAI developer documentation and Telegram Bot API to build their own workflow. That is a separate undertaking, not a substitute for the proposed official integration; the developer would be responsible for implementation, hosting, moderation and clear privacy disclosures.
