Yes, T-Mobile really did offer a Google Pixel 7a for free, but only through 24 monthly bill credits and with qualifying service requirements. The public promotion ended June 5, 2024, so it should not be treated as a deal you can claim now. Here is how it worked, what customers still had to pay, and what to verify before accepting a similar offer.
What the original Pixel 7a offer included
T-Mobile advertised the 128GB Google Pixel 7a at $499.99, financed at about $20.84 per month for 24 months. Eligible customers could receive up to $499.99 in promotional bill credits over that period. The credits offset the equipment payments; they were not an instant discount at checkout. T-Mobile’s launch announcement described two distinct ways to qualify:

T-Mobile said new and existing customers, including T-Mobile for Business customers, could qualify, but that did not mean every customer or plan qualified for either route. Business eligibility and terms should not be assumed to match consumer offers.

Why “free” did not mean $0 at checkout
The phone’s $499.99 price was charged through an equipment installment plan (EIP), while promotional credits appeared separately on the bill. The historic terms described up to $499.99 in credits over 24 months; at the advertised price, the installment was about $20.84 monthly. The figures may not multiply to exactly $499.99 because of rounding.

- Sales tax: The archived terms said tax was due on the full pre-credit price.
- Device connection charge: The archived offer listed a $35 charge.
- Wireless service: The qualifying line or plan still had its own cost. If you added a line solely for the phone, include that service cost in your calculation.
- Other charges: Applicable plan, activation, insurance, accessory, or upgrade charges were separate from the phone credits.
For the historical new-line route, compare the line’s cost over the 24-month credit period with the device’s $499.99 nominal value. The phone credit did not pay for the service. T-Mobile’s archived offer terms also said credits could take up to two billing cycles to appear, so the first bill might show the installment before the offsetting credit arrives.
What could interrupt the credits
The offer depended on maintaining an eligible account and line while credits were being issued. T-Mobile warned that canceling wireless service before all 24 credits arrived would stop future credits, and the remaining EIP balance could become due. Its promotional-offer FAQ says credits can also end if a device is paid off early. Do not assume an early payoff preserves the remaining credits; check the specific offer and financing terms before acting.

- Returning the phone reverses applicable EIP charges and credits, according to T-Mobile’s FAQ.
- The archived terms said some customers who had canceled a line within the previous 90 days might need to reactivate it to qualify.
- The 2023 offer listed a limit of 12 discounted devices per account and restrictions on combining offers.
When did the deal end?
T-Mobile’s archived offer listing identifies promotion code P578 as running from November 16, 2023, through June 5, 2024, with credits of up to $20.84 per month for 24 months. The archived promotion page is the clearest date reference. As of August 2026, the original public offer is historical, not a currently verified promotion.

T-Mobile’s surfaced store inventory page lists newer Pixel models rather than the Pixel 7a. That page does not rule out residual stock or an account-specific offer, but it is not evidence that the expired public promotion has returned. Check the current offer page, T-Life account, or checkout terms before opening a line or trading in a phone.
How to assess a replacement offer
Before agreeing to a new “free phone” promotion, confirm these details in the offer terms or at checkout:
- Whether the promotion is currently active, and its expiration date and code.
- Which plan qualifies and whether you need a new line, an upgrade, or a trade-in.
- The exact eligible trade-in models and condition requirements, if a trade-in is involved.
- The phone’s full price, monthly EIP payment, credit amount, and number of credit months.
- Upfront tax, connection or activation fees, and the cost of any required service.
- What happens to credits if you cancel, change plans, return the device, or pay it off early.
- Whether the phone is in stock and whether any financing or account eligibility requirements apply.
Is adding a line worth it for a free phone?
Only if the line itself makes financial sense. If you do not need an additional line, add its expected cost over the 24-month credit period to the upfront taxes and fees, then compare that total with the value of the phone and the cost of buying a device without carrier credits. For flexibility, consider a current T-Mobile Pixel offer, an unlocked phone from the Google Store, or an unlocked phone with prepaid or MVNO service. Current prices and plan costs vary, so compare them directly rather than assuming a carrier promotion is the least expensive option. T-Mobile’s current phone-deals page and Google phone catalog are places to check for present offers; business customers can check T-Mobile’s business Pixel offers, which are not interchangeable with consumer promotions.
