American Airlines has four AAdvantage elite tiers: Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum. For the qualification year running March 1, 2026, through February 28, 2027, members need 40,000, 75,000, 125,000 or 200,000 Loyalty Points, respectively. The tiers differ most clearly in boarding priority, checked-bag benefits and the mileage bonus on eligible flights; upgrades and other perks depend on the trip and applicable terms.
What are the AAdvantage tiers?
The four publicly listed elite tiers are Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum. American says the status and reward requirements were unchanged for the third consecutive year in 2026; its published thresholds were introduced in 2022. American’s threshold announcement and its 2026 program update provide the airline’s figures.
These tiers are based on Loyalty Points, not the balance of award miles available to redeem for travel. The qualification year begins March 1 and ends on the last day of February. The thresholds below apply to March 1, 2026, through February 28, 2027.

The boarding groups are from American’s status benefits page; mileage bonuses are from its miles-earning page. Bag allowances depend on status and itinerary, and may not apply on codeshares operated by another airline. Standard cabin allowances and destination limits also apply, so check the allowance for the specific trip.

How do you earn Loyalty Points?
American says eligible AAdvantage miles earned also earn one Loyalty Point each. Eligible base miles can come from qualifying flights, eligible co-branded card activity and participating non-airline partners. The earning rules vary by fare, transaction and partner. Bonus miles do not count as Loyalty Points; neither do miles that are bought, gifted or transferred. See American’s Loyalty Points information for current program terms.
Eligible American-marketed flights
For American-marketed eligible flights, American lists a base earning rate of 5 miles per U.S. dollar spent on base fare plus carrier-imposed fees, excluding government-imposed taxes and fees. The tier bonus is applied to eligible-flight mileage earnings at the rates shown above. Some fare types and exceptions do not earn; American’s current earning page specifically excludes Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after December 17, 2025. Confirm that the fare qualifies before counting on its points.

Card activity and posting dates
Eligible card miles and Loyalty Points post to the primary cardmember’s account, typically 8 to 10 weeks after purchase activity, according to American’s AAdvantage FAQ. That delay can matter near the March 1 qualification-year reset: purchase timing alone does not establish when points will post.
What changes as you move up the tiers?
Gold to Platinum
Platinum requires 35,000 more Loyalty Points than Gold in the 2026–27 cycle. It moves boarding from Group 4 to Group 3, increases the eligible-flight mileage bonus from 40% to 60%, and raises the listed checked-bag benefit from a first bag to up to two free bags.
Platinum to Platinum Pro
Platinum Pro requires 50,000 additional points beyond Platinum. Members move from Group 3 to Group 2, receive an 80% eligible-flight mileage bonus rather than 60%, and have up to three free checked bags under the listed benefit.
Platinum Pro to Executive Platinum
Executive Platinum requires 75,000 additional points beyond Platinum Pro. Its listed advantages over Platinum Pro are Group 1 boarding and a 120% eligible-flight mileage bonus, compared with Group 2 and 80% at Platinum Pro. Both upper tiers list up to three free checked bags.

Upgrades and other travel benefits
American’s tier summaries also advertise complimentary upgrades on eligible travel, preferred seating and priority services. These are conditional benefits, not a guarantee that an upgrade will clear on a particular flight. The applicable rules and availability depend on the itinerary, flight and fare; check the current status benefits page for the trip rather than assuming a universal upgrade or seating entitlement.

The point threshold alone does not determine a tier’s value to an individual member. Consider these practical factors:

- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Distance to the next threshold: Compare your posted Loyalty Points with the next tier’s requirement, not with your award-mile balance.
- Eligible travel and activity: Think about how often you fly eligible American or partner itineraries and whether you already earn points through eligible card or partner activity.
- Benefits you will actually use: Earlier boarding, checked-bag allowances and flight mileage bonuses matter differently depending on your usual trips, bags and fare types.
- Upgrade expectations: Treat upgrades as conditional. A tier does not establish the probability of clearing on your routes.
Milestone rewards are separate from elite tiers
AAdvantage also offers Loyalty Point Rewards at milestones between and above the four status thresholds. These rewards are choices tied to a member’s account and milestone, not additional elite tiers. American’s Loyalty Point Rewards page lists options and terms.
Examples of published milestones
- 15,000 points: The 2026 page lists Group 5 boarding for the membership year and choices that include points, trip priority or boarding, seat coupons, food and beverage coupons, a luggage tag or a limited subscription.
- 60,000 points: The options include Gold benefits and choices such as Avis Preferred Plus.
- 100,000 points: The options include Platinum benefits and additional choices such as Hyatt Discoverist and Avis President’s Club.
- Higher milestones: Depending on the milestone, choices include higher-tier benefits, upgrades, credits, bonus miles, lounge membership or passes, partner hotel awards and status gifts.
Specific choices can depend on the milestone, account eligibility, region and terms; some enhanced options are limited to eligible cardmembers. American’s 2026 newsroom also says members who qualify for status starting March 1, 2026, may claim a limited-edition centennial luggage tag. That is a conditional reward, not evidence that the tag is a regular retail product.
Changes announced for 2026
American’s 2026 updates page says the select-partner bonus at 60,000 Loyalty Points rose from 20% to 25% effective March 1, 2026. The offer applies for six months after registration and is capped at 25,000 additional Loyalty Points. The same page says the 100,000-point 30% bonus and Bang & Olufsen reward choices at specified milestones were removed effective March 1, 2026. Older FAQ material may still show the former bonus levels; use the 2026 updates page for current terms.
