Sony Interactive Entertainment paid approximately $229 million for Insomniac Games, according to Sony’s financial filings. The reported consideration was ¥24.895 billion, paid mainly in cash, for an acquisition completed on November 15, 2019. The amount was not included in Sony’s initial announcement and was disclosed later in financial reporting.
When Sony announced and completed the deal
Sony announced on August 19, 2019 that it had entered definitive agreements to acquire Insomniac Games. That announcement confirmed the transaction but did not state a purchase price. Sony later reported that the acquisition closed on November 15, 2019. The company’s announcement is available from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Insomniac became a wholly owned Sony subsidiary and joined Sony’s worldwide first-party development organization, now associated with the PlayStation Studios structure.

Sony’s quarterly securities report listed acquisition consideration of ¥24.895 billion, equivalent in the filing to approximately $229 million. It said the consideration was paid mainly in cash, so describing the transaction as entirely cash-paid would be inaccurate. The filing also said the amount could be adjusted using Insomniac’s final closing-date financial statements.

How Sony accounted for the acquisition
The purchase accounting did not treat the entire amount as one undifferentiated asset. One Sony filing attributed approximately $165 million to goodwill and approximately $62 million to intangible assets. A later consolidated statement listed goodwill at approximately $164 million while retaining the $62 million intangible-asset figure. Those figures come from different Sony reports and reflect accounting presentation or subsequent closing adjustments, not a different headline transaction altogether. Sony’s later statement is available in its consolidated financial statements.

Why Insomniac mattered to PlayStation
Sony described Insomniac as a studio with more than 25 years of development experience and a long history of collaboration with PlayStation. Its best-known work included Ratchet & Clank and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

In the 2019 announcement, Sony said Marvel’s Spider-Man had sold more than 13.2 million copies worldwide as of July 28, 2019. That is a historical sales snapshot supplied at the time, not a current lifetime total.
What the $229 million did—and did not—buy
Sony bought the developer
The transaction acquired Insomniac Games, Inc. as a company. It was not simply a payment for one game, and the reported consideration should not automatically be treated as the price of every franchise or asset associated with the studio.
It did not buy Marvel’s underlying Spider-Man rights
Sony bought the developer behind Marvel’s Spider-Man, not Marvel’s underlying Spider-Man character rights. The game’s licensing and publishing arrangements are separate from ownership of the development studio. Sony’s acquisition announcement identifies Insomniac as the acquired entity and does not state that Sony purchased Marvel’s intellectual property.

It was not the lifetime cost of running the studio
Acquisition consideration is different from future spending on employees, technology, game development, marketing, facilities, integration or other operating needs. The $229 million figure therefore should not be presented as the complete lifetime cost of owning Insomniac.

Why the price attracted attention
The amount looked modest compared with Insomniac’s profile and the commercial importance of Marvel’s Spider-Man. Contemporary coverage described the figure as surprising, including Game Developer’s report. But “cheap” or “a bargain” is an interpretation, not an accounting conclusion.

A studio’s purchase consideration, a game’s sales, the profit from a particular title, and the value of licensed intellectual property are separate questions. Sony’s filing alone does not disclose the deal’s expected return, title-by-title profitability or all future costs. It establishes what Sony reported as consideration for acquiring Insomniac.
