As of August 16, 2026, Verizon’s public materials do not verify a current standalone offer for a free iPhone 12 with a Verizon Unlimited plan. Verizon’s current “free phone” promotions generally cover newer models through monthly bill credits over a 36-month device-payment agreement. A targeted offer in My Verizon, an old advertisement, or a used-phone listing may explain the claim, but none proves that every Unlimited customer can receive an iPhone 12 at no device cost.
What the iPhone 12 claim may actually mean
Verizon’s public smartphone-deals page currently emphasizes newer iPhones rather than an iPhone 12 giveaway. Verizon also says promotions vary by offer and account, and special deals may appear only after signing in to My Verizon.

Unless the current Verizon terms identify the iPhone 12 model, storage capacity, qualifying plan, eligibility rules and expiration date, treat the claim as unverified.
How Verizon’s “free phone” promotions work
- You select a qualifying phone and place it on a device-payment agreement, usually 36 months.
- Verizon charges the regular monthly device payment.
- Promotional credits appear on the bill and offset some or all of that payment.
- The credits continue only while the line, plan, device agreement and all other requirements remain compliant.

For example, a $729.99 phone financed over 36 months would carry a device payment of about $20.28 per month before taxes and fees. A full credit could offset that charge, but it would not eliminate the wireless plan, taxes, activation or upgrade fees, accessories, insurance, or any uncovered amount.
What you still pay
- The qualifying Verizon service plan, such as Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Ultimate.
- Taxes and regulatory fees.
- Activation or upgrade charges.
- Any down payment, accessories, protection plan or amount not covered by credits.
- Potentially higher service costs if the promotion requires a premium plan.
Verizon’s Unlimited Plus FAQ notes that offers and trade-in eligibility vary by plan. Auto Pay and paper-free billing may provide a discount of up to $10 per month when the required payment method is used. Confirm the exact plan name and discount at checkout; prices and requirements change.

Do you need a new line?
There is no blanket rule for all Unlimited customers. Verizon says some promotions require only a qualifying device, while others require a new smartphone line, an upgrade, a trade-in or a specific plan.
- Switching to Verizon: You may need a new line and an eligible port-in.
- Existing postpaid customer: Eligibility may depend on an upgrade, a new line or a targeted account offer.
- Adding a line: The line creates a continuing service charge even if device payments are fully credited.
- Prepaid: Verizon prepaid promotions are separate from postpaid Unlimited offers; see Verizon prepaid plans.
- Business: Business Unlimited terms are separate from consumer promotions.
Do not assume a grandfathered plan qualifies. Changing it can also affect existing discounts or credits.

How to verify an offer before signing up
- Open Verizon’s current smartphone deals page and search specifically for “iPhone 12.”
- Sign in to My Verizon and check account-specific deals.
- Open the full terms and record the model, storage, new-line or upgrade rule, required plan, trade-in rules, device term, monthly charge, credit amount, credit start date, Auto Pay requirement, fees and expiration date.
- Save screenshots or a PDF of the terms.
- At checkout, confirm the cart shows the correct phone, plan, device payment, promotional credit, activation fee, down payment, taxes and shipping.
- Review the first two bills. If credits are missing after the stated period, contact Verizon with the saved terms.
What can stop the credits
Under Verizon’s promotion guidance, credits may stop when you:
- Cancel the promoted line.
- Change to a nonqualifying plan.
- Pay off the device early.
- Complete an early upgrade.
- Transfer the line in a way that does not preserve the promotion.
- Fail an account, payment or Auto Pay requirement.
- Fail to return a required trade-in or send a device that does not match the submitted model or condition.
An unpaid device balance may then become due. Verizon’s mobile bill FAQ explains that an outstanding device balance can appear on the next bill after cancellation. Line-transfer rules are addressed in Verizon’s transfer-service FAQ, and plan changes in its plan-change FAQ.

Trade-in requirements to check
When a trade-in is required, back up the old phone, sign out of iCloud, turn off Find My iPhone, erase all content, photograph its condition and IMEI, and retain tracking and delivery proof. Verizon generally requires a phone that powers on, has a functioning uncracked screen, no battery damage, Activation Lock disabled, and a model matching the submission. Some existing-customer promotions require 60 consecutive days of prior activity on the Verizon account.

The iPhone 12 is a 2020-era model. If Verizon does not list it new, you may find it through certified-refurbished inventory, used marketplaces, third-party retailers, existing inventory or a retention offer. Those are not equivalent to a Verizon “free phone” promotion.

For a used or refurbished device, verify storage, battery health, Activation Lock, carrier-lock status, IMEI, physical and water damage, warranty, return period, Verizon network compatibility and future trade-in eligibility. A newer Verizon promotional iPhone may offer a longer software-support runway and better resale value, even when its device payment is offset by credits.
Compare the three-year cost, not the advertised device price
Use this calculation before accepting any offer:
Total promotional cost = required service cost + taxes and fees + activation or upgrade charges + uncovered device balance − actual promotional credits − applicable plan discounts.
As an existing customer, compare the cost of keeping your current plan and buying a phone elsewhere with the cost of changing plans, adding a line, forfeiting current credits or paying a remaining balance if you leave early. A plan that costs even $15 more per month for 36 months adds $540—more than the device credit may be worth.

Alternatives to an iPhone 12 promotion
- Current Verizon promotion: Check the live Verizon deals page for a newer qualifying iPhone.
- Refurbished iPhone 12: Compare inventory at Apple Certified Refurbished, Amazon Renewed, Back Market or eBay Refurbished; check condition, warranty and lock status.
- Unlocked iPhone: Buy from Apple to keep carrier flexibility, accepting a higher upfront cost instead of Verizon credits.
- Lower-cost service: Compare the total cost of an unlocked phone with a cheaper carrier rather than paying for a higher Verizon tier solely to obtain a “free” device.
Who should accept—or avoid—the deal?
It may fit if
- You already want Verizon service and can keep the line for all 36 months.
- The qualifying plan is competitive with your alternatives.
- The phone is fully covered by credits without an unnecessary line or expensive trade-in requirement.
- You value carrier financing and account convenience.
It may be a poor fit if
- You may switch carriers, upgrade early or need an unlocked phone immediately.
- The required plan costs substantially more than your current service.
- You are adding a line only to obtain the device.
- Your trade-in is damaged or worth less than the advertised maximum.
- You are comparing only the device payment and ignoring service, taxes, fees and lost discounts.
Verdict
Do not sign up based solely on “free iPhone 12 with Verizon Unlimited.” As of August 16, 2026, no current Verizon public offer verifies that exact deal. Check Verizon’s live listings and My Verizon account, save the complete terms, and calculate the 36-month service commitment before accepting a newer promotional iPhone or buying a used iPhone 12.
