Pfizer did not shut down an operating factory in Seattle. After completing its approximately $43 billion acquisition of Seagen, Pfizer halted construction of an unfinished 270,000-square-foot biomanufacturing facility at 215 Shuksan Way in south Everett, Washington. The company said products intended for the site would be manufactured mainly at its facility in Sanford, North Carolina.
The decision affected 119 workers according to a Washington WARN notice, with layoffs scheduled to begin June 3, 2024. It did not eliminate Pfizer’s entire Seagen-derived manufacturing presence in the region: Pfizer continues to list its North Creek, Washington, site as an active facility producing antibody-drug conjugates and antibody intermediates.
What Pfizer actually stopped
The Everett project was a planned expansion, not a mature manufacturing plant that had been producing commercial medicines. Seagen announced the facility in April 2022 as a 270,000-square-foot site designed to manufacture biologic and antibody-based cancer medicines for clinical trials and commercial supply. It was expected to support up to 200 highly skilled jobs.

Pfizer inherited the project when it completed its acquisition of Seagen on December 14, 2023. In late February or early March 2024, Pfizer said it would wind down construction after reviewing its manufacturing network.
Seagen’s original announcement described the facility’s size, purpose and planned workforce. Local reporting later identified the site address and construction details.
Why Pfizer cancelled the Everett project
Pfizer’s stated reason was a review of manufacturing capacity and projected product demand. The company said it regularly evaluates its network to ensure that capacity is effectively utilized, and concluded that the intended production could be handled mainly at its existing Sanford, North Carolina, operation, which was expanding and had additional capacity.
That explanation supports a manufacturing-network consolidation rationale. Completing Everett would have required Pfizer to finish and validate a new site shortly after absorbing Seagen, while Sanford already offered infrastructure, personnel and a broader multiproduct manufacturing system.
Those operational advantages are industry analysis rather than a savings figure disclosed by Pfizer. The available reporting does not establish how much Pfizer saved, the final cost of the project, or whether the decision was directly tied to a particular acquisition-related cost target. It also does not prove that Pfizer regretted buying Seagen or intended to withdraw from antibody-drug-conjugate manufacturing.

Pfizer’s acquisition-completion release confirms the closing date, share consideration and transaction value. The $215 million figure was a reported Skanska construction-contract value, not necessarily the project’s total investment. Some local reports cited higher overall project estimates, but those should not be treated as a verified final cost.
How many jobs were affected?
Early reports described the impact as roughly 120 jobs. The more precise figure in the Washington WARN notice was 119 workers, with layoffs scheduled to start June 3, 2024.

This number should not be confused with Seagen’s original projection of up to 200 permanent employees at a completed facility. The 200-worker figure was a future-state estimate; the WARN figure represented workers associated with the project when it was wound down. The available reporting does not establish that all 119 workers would otherwise have become the plant’s long-term operating workforce.
Pfizer said it would try to place affected employees in available roles at the Bothell-area site. That was an effort to identify opportunities, not a guarantee that every affected worker was retained or transferred.

Where the planned production went
Pfizer said products intended for Everett would be manufactured mainly at Sanford, North Carolina. “Mainly” matters: Pfizer did not say that every product, process or employee would move there, and the statement leaves open the possibility of production being distributed across Pfizer facilities or suppliers.
The Sanford network includes an existing flexible, multiproduct manufacturing operation and a separately listed Sanford North site with planned biologics capabilities. Using an established site can reduce the need to build, staff and qualify an entirely new facility, although technology transfer, validation and supply-chain transitions still carry operational risks.
The Everett project was associated with Seagen’s work in biologics and antibody-drug-conjugate-related manufacturing. ADCs combine an antibody with a drug payload intended to target cancer cells. The evidence establishes the intended production category, but not a completed Everett product roster. It would therefore be inaccurate to say the unfinished facility was already making a named commercial medicine.

Pfizer did not abandon all Seagen operations around Seattle. The company’s current manufacturing-site directory lists North Creek, Washington, as an active site producing antibody-drug conjugates and antibody intermediates.

North Creek is in the Bothell area, while the cancelled project was in Everett. The distinction is important:

Seagen’s corporate-responsibility reporting also described North Creek as having regulatory approvals for commercial manufacturing of PADCEV. That context reinforces that the Everett decision was a cancelled expansion, not a complete shutdown of local Seagen manufacturing.
Economic meaning for Everett and the Pacific Northwest
For Everett, the immediate effect was the loss of a major planned construction and manufacturing project. The region did not receive the full long-term employment benefit Seagen had projected, and local suppliers, contractors and surrounding businesses lost expected activity associated with a new biotech facility.
The cancellation also illustrates a distinction that matters to regional economies: preserving research, headquarters and technical functions is not the same as adding manufacturing capacity. Manufacturing sites create different jobs, supplier relationships and infrastructure demands than laboratories or corporate offices.
For Pfizer, redirecting production to Sanford may improve network utilization and avoid duplicating capacity. For the Pacific Northwest, however, it reduces the region’s expected manufacturing growth even though North Creek remains active. The decision is therefore best understood as a setback to local expansion—not evidence of a total Pfizer withdrawal from the Seattle-area biotech sector.
