Several former Tesla AI and robotics employees have reportedly joined Sunday Robotics, a startup building a home robot called Memo. The moves are notable, but they do not establish a company-wide talent exodus, an organized poaching campaign, or a failure of Tesla’s Optimus program. The clearest distinction is the work itself: Sunday is focused on one wheeled household robot and a near-term beta, while Tesla is pursuing a broader autonomy and humanoid-robot strategy.
What is known about Tesla employees joining Sunday?
Electrek reported that several former Tesla employees joined Sunday, including people associated with Autopilot, Full Self-Driving (FSD), Optimus data work, AI infrastructure, and recruiting. Its named examples are:
- Nishant Desai: Reported as a nearly five-year Tesla machine-learning employee who worked on Autopilot and FSD.
- Nadeesha Amarasinghe: Reported as Tesla’s former engineering lead for AI infrastructure, including systems supporting FSD and Optimus training.
- Perry Jia: Reported as having led data-engine work for Optimus and Autopilot before taking a data-operations role at Sunday.
- Jason Peterson: Reported as a former Tesla recruiter connected to Optimus and Robotaxi who joined Sunday in September 2025.
Other outlets have described at least ten Tesla-related hires, using publicly visible employment profiles. That is not an audited count: profiles can be outdated, and “worked at Tesla” may refer to an intern or short-term employee as well as a full-time hire. Neither company has published an official tally of Tesla-to-Sunday moves. Electrek’s named reporting is here; the higher estimates are attributed to Gizchina and EVSHIFT.
The defensible description is a visible group of former Tesla AI and robotics personnel moving to Sunday—not proof that Tesla is losing its AI organization as a whole. Departures alone also do not show that a Tesla project has failed or that Sunday recruited each person for the same reason.

What is Sunday Robotics building?
Sunday emerged from stealth in November 2025 with Memo, a wheeled home robot intended for chores such as clearing a table, loading a dishwasher, folding clothes, tidying, putting away shoes, and making espresso. The company says Memo learns from human demonstrations recorded with a wearable Skill Capture Glove, and that it has collected data in more than 500 homes, amounting to approximately 10 million household episodes. These are company-reported figures and product aims, not independent evidence that Memo performs every task reliably in ordinary homes. Sunday’s launch announcement describes the robot and data program.
Sunday’s March 2026 Series B announcement said a household beta rollout was planned for fall 2026; its earlier launch material described a late-2026 founding-family beta. A beta is an early deployment, not the same as a broadly available consumer appliance or proof of dependable performance across homes. Sunday announced $35 million in initial funding when it emerged from stealth and later announced a $165 million Series B at a $1.15 billion valuation. Those figures help explain its ability to recruit and prepare deployment, but funding does not establish technical success. See the company’s Series B announcement.
How Sunday’s approach differs from Tesla’s
Sunday’s first product is deliberately constrained: a wheeled robot, a domestic setting, and a set of household tasks. Tesla describes Optimus as a general-purpose, bipedal, autonomous humanoid robot, alongside work spanning vehicle autonomy, neural networks, custom inference chips, algorithms, evaluation infrastructure, and software foundations. A wheeled platform avoids some balance and fall challenges associated with bipedal robots, but it does not make domestic robotics easy. Homes contain variable layouts, fragile items, liquids, pets, children, and tasks that require handling objects safely. Conversely, Tesla’s humanoid form may fit human-designed spaces and support a broader range of tasks, but it adds substantial mechanical and control challenges. The two companies are not solving precisely the same first-product problem.
Their data strategies should not be reduced to a simple contrast between “fleet data” and “demonstrations.” Tesla publicly describes fleet data, simulation, and evaluation infrastructure, while reporting on Optimus has also discussed teleoperation and other training methods. Sunday’s home demonstrations are a specific part of its pitch; its claimed episode count cannot be directly compared with Tesla vehicle miles or clips without common definitions and comparable evidence.
Why might engineers choose Sunday?
Without on-the-record explanations from each person who left, motivations are necessarily an informed reading of the companies’ stated plans—not a confirmed account of individual decisions.

A more immediate product milestone
Sunday is aiming at a household beta for a defined robot. That may appeal to engineers who want to work toward a tangible deployment milestone. Tesla’s stated humanoid and autonomy ambitions encompass a much broader set of technical and manufacturing problems, with no household launch date established on the cited AI page.
A narrower mission and shorter feedback loop
Concentrating on one robot and a domestic use case may reduce competition among internal priorities and let teams connect data collection, model development, hardware changes, and field feedback more directly. Sunday says it controls those parts of the process in a full-stack organization. Whether that produces faster or better results remains to be demonstrated in deployment.
More influence at an early-stage company
Senior hires at a startup may have more say over architecture, hiring, and product direction than they would in a large organization. Equity can also be part of a startup offer, but there is no reliable public comparison of Sunday and Tesla compensation packages. There is no basis to claim Sunday pays more.

A focused technical thesis about home data
Sunday argues that useful home robotics needs varied demonstrations from real households. Its Skill Capture Glove and home-data program give engineers a specific technical problem to pursue: translating human demonstrations into robust manipulation in unfamiliar domestic settings. The company’s data figures remain self-reported, and the size of a dataset alone does not establish the quality of resulting autonomous behavior.
Funding and hiring momentum
Sunday said in March 2026 that its engineering team had grown threefold, research fourfold, and data operations fivefold, and that it had more than 70 engineers and researchers. The company also said its team includes people with backgrounds at organizations including Stanford, Tesla, DeepMind, Waymo, Meta, OpenAI, and Apple. Such growth and a large funding round can make a startup seem like a serious place to build and deploy a product; they do not independently validate Memo’s capabilities. It could raise questions about retention and focus, especially if future evidence shows departures concentrated in a critical team or followed by delayed milestones. Potential pressures include multiple prominent projects competing for engineering attention, demanding timelines, and the difficulty of turning prototypes into reliable products. Those are plausible explanations, not established causes of the reported moves; the available accounts do not show that these factors drove each person’s decision.

To judge whether the movement is strategically significant, look beyond a raw headcount. Seniority and the systems people owned matter; so do the concentration of departures in one team, how difficult their expertise is to replace, and whether there is evidence of product impact. A cluster of visible profiles does not, by itself, establish a company-wide brain drain.
Is Sunday’s hiring a threat to Tesla?
Not by itself. Tesla retains substantial advantages relevant to its strategy: a large connected-vehicle fleet, manufacturing experience, custom AI-hardware expertise, and a broad autonomy organization. Its AI page describes work across those areas as well as Optimus. Employees carry valuable knowledge of data pipelines, simulation, robot learning, hardware-software integration, safety, and recruiting, so losing experienced people can matter; the public reports do not quantify any resulting effect on Tesla’s products.
Sunday, meanwhile, faces the hard part of proving its focused approach in real homes. Demonstration data does not automatically yield autonomous reliability; safe behavior around people and fragile objects is demanding; and an early beta does not establish that a robot can be manufactured, serviced, and offered at a price consumers will accept. Sunday has not announced a normal consumer retail price for Memo in the cited materials.

The reported moves are best read as evidence that Sunday has made a compelling recruiting proposition around a focused product and a near-term deployment plan. They are a reason to watch Tesla’s retention and Sunday’s execution, not proof that one company has already won the robotics race.
