Bottomless can automate coffee reordering, but it cannot promise an endless cup. Its Wi‑Fi scale weighs the coffee supply, estimates how quickly it is being consumed, and schedules another order around that estimate, shipping time and roaster fulfillment. You receive a notice before the order is placed and can change, postpone or cancel it. That is materially different from a subscription that ships every two or four weeks.
The trade-off is a monthly fee, countertop hardware and several points of failure: the scale must stay powered and connected, the coffee must remain on it, and unusual demand or carrier delays can beat the prediction. Think of Bottomless as automated inventory software attached to a coffee marketplace—not insurance against running out.
What Bottomless actually is
A conventional coffee subscription follows a calendar. Bottomless calls its model “subscription by usage”: the included smart scale tracks the changing weight of your beans and uses that history to estimate when a replacement should be ordered. You can select one coffee, a recurring rotation or preferences across a marketplace. Bottomless says its marketplace covers more than 50 roasters and thousands of rotations; those are company-reported figures, not independently audited totals (Bottomless).

What arrives and how setup works
The normal sequence is to choose a coffee or rotation, receive the first bag and scale, connect the scale to Wi‑Fi, then leave the bag or a tared container on it while you use the coffee. Bottomless lists an account email, Wi‑Fi name and password, and the included micro‑USB cable as setup requirements. Its support index describes the standard scale as approximately 5.25 × 3.5 × 0.65 inches, with capacity up to 2 kilograms; check the unit you receive because the same documentation distinguishes larger beta hardware (Bottomless scale support).

Public documentation does not establish compatibility with every 5-GHz network, captive portal, mesh, guest or enterprise Wi‑Fi setup. Treat those as questions to verify during installation, not guaranteed features. Also confirm what happens after a router-password change and whether readings are retained during an outage.
Using a container or grinder hopper
Bottomless says you can zero the scale with a household jar or other container. It also describes using a grinder hopper, but recommends adding only roughly two or three days of beans rather than emptying a whole bag into the hopper. Re-zero after changing containers, keep the vessel fully on the platform and avoid moving it repeatedly. A one-off order should not be placed on the scale as though it were the tracked subscription supply (subscription support).
How the reorder prediction works
The company does not publish a universal rule such as “order at 20% remaining.” The observable model is:

- It factors in shipping and fulfillment time.
- It selects a reorder point intended to deliver the next bag before the current supply is exhausted.
- You can choose a strategy that favors avoiding a runout, balancing timing or prioritizing freshness, then provide feedback when an order is early or late.
Bottomless acknowledges that timing can be imperfect while a new account accumulates data (order-timing guidance). The scale can observe inventory; it cannot know about guests, larger doses, a new brew method or beans moved to another counter.

How much warning do you get?
Bottomless pages use slightly different language: the homepage describes an alert approximately 8–12 hours before an order, while a brand page says at least 12 hours. Report that as a range, not a guaranteed universal window. The alert is intended to let you change the coffee, postpone or cancel before fulfillment, but check whether your account receives SMS, email or both and whether a missed overnight message leaves enough time to intervene (Bottomless, Messenger Coffee page).
Can it handle a caffeine-heavy household?
For stable daily use, a usage model should be better matched than a calendar shipment. For volatile use, keep a buffer. Bottomless specifically says that, when an early order is needed, you can remove the remaining product from the scale several days before it is empty; its support article says the system may prompt an order at least 24 hours after detecting zero weight (early-reorder instructions).
- One steady drinker: the system has the best chance to learn a reliable rate.
- Several brewers: capacity and replenishment speed matter; the scale does not distinguish users.
- Guests or holidays: consumption can outrun the learned window, so manually accelerate an order or keep an emergency bag.
To measure reliability rather than repeat marketing language, record the starting weight, each warning, charge date, ship date, delivery date and weight when the replacement arrives. Repeat under normal, heavy and sudden-spike consumption.

You can repeat one coffee, follow a rotation or customize by roast, grind, origin and flavor preferences. That variety is separate from automation: a correctly timed order does not prove a fresher roast. Check the roast date on every bag, because roaster lead times and carrier transit differ.

Before relying on a rotation, verify whether you can lock whole bean, espresso or decaf; preview upcoming queue items; and see what happens if a coffee is discontinued. Recent Reddit discussion raises anecdotal concerns about discontinued coffees and changing queue prices, but it is not representative customer data (user discussion).

What to do when the system fails
The replacement is late
Check whether the account is still connected, the bag was left on the scale and consumption has not jumped. A new account may still be learning; a roaster or carrier may also be late. Keep one emergency bag, manually schedule an order or use the early-reorder procedure.
The replacement is early
Use the account’s timing strategy or feedback control so future orders better match your buffer. Confirm the current label in your account because support wording can change.
The scale reads incorrectly
- Re-zero after changing a bag, jar or hopper.
- Ensure the entire container sits on the platform.
- Restore power and Wi‑Fi after a battery or router problem.
- Do not move tracked coffee elsewhere without realizing the system loses visibility.
A coffee disappears or you want another one
Use the subscription queue and product controls to switch coffees or reorder a specific product. Do not assume a discontinued bag will be automatically replaced; confirm whether your account substitutes, pauses or asks for approval.
Pausing and canceling
Bottomless advertises pause and cancellation at any time. Its support material also describes pausing automatic ordering for up to one year, hibernating, skipping, manually scheduling and making one-off purchases (orders support). Distinguish pausing shipments from canceling membership, and check whether a queued order can still be charged, whether fees continue during a pause and what happens to the scale and promotional price after reactivation.
Who should use Bottomless?
- Choose it if forgetting to reorder is the main problem, consumption varies, you buy whole beans frequently and a recurring fee is acceptable.
- Choose a conventional service such as Trade for multi-roaster discovery and taste matching when you can manage a cadence.
- Choose Atlas Coffee Club for structured, origin-focused exploration rather than inventory-aware delivery.
- Choose MistoBox when human curation matters more than automation.
- Choose Bean Box for sampler and gift-oriented buying.
- Choose a local or direct-roaster subscription when exact coffee control, roast-date visibility and a trusted relationship outweigh convenience.
Bottomless is a poor fit for occasional drinkers, people who constantly change storage, households with unreliable Wi‑Fi, anyone unwilling to monitor subscription billing, or readers outside the United States who need confirmed international availability. The central trade is simple: it removes calendar management but replaces it with device, connectivity and notification management.
