Infinite Reality announced on June 4, 2024, that it had acquired Action Face, a company that made customizable 3D avatars from selfies. The deal was described as an all-stock transaction. The announcement cited a $3.5 billion value for Infinite Reality’s shares in the transaction; it did not say that Action Face sold for $3.5 billion. A later industry report listed Action Face at $10 million, but that figure was not disclosed as the purchase price in the original announcement.
What Infinite Reality bought
Action Face developed AI-powered software for creating lifelike, customizable 3D avatars from a selfie. Its announced features included choices such as hairstyles, poses and outfits; short avatar videos called “Action Clips”; and augmented-reality and cartoon-style environments. The company also described a way to turn avatars into 3D-printed figurines through a partnership with HP. Its June 2024 announcement said an iOS app was available at the time.
Those are capabilities described by the companies, not independent performance findings. The announcement does not identify the AI model, explain how it was trained, or establish that users could export avatars for unrestricted use in games or other platforms.
What the deal terms do—and do not—say
Infinite Reality’s announcement called the transaction all-stock and said it valued Infinite Reality’s shares at $3.5 billion. That is not the same as a disclosed cash price for Action Face, nor does it mean Action Face itself was valued at $3.5 billion.

- From James Cameron’s new film Avatar
- Sure to be a Collector favorite
- 3.75" Action Figure
- Exciting details, amazing accuracy, and a unique weapon or accessory
- Includes character specific Webcam i-TAG to bring the thrilling battle scenes to 3-D life
Sports Business Journal later reported a $10 million value for the Action Face transaction in a list of Infinite Reality acquisitions. That is useful context, but it should be attributed to that later report rather than treated as a purchase price confirmed in the June announcement. The public announcement itself does not state a cash purchase price.
Why the technology could matter to Infinite Reality
Infinite Reality said it planned to integrate Action Face’s technology into its platform and use it across sports, entertainment, retail and other brand experiences. The strategic idea is straightforward: a recognizable 3D identity may make a digital brand or fan interaction feel more personal than a profile picture, and the same avatar concept could potentially extend across video, AR, virtual environments and physical merchandise.

- Na’vi character from James Cameron’s new film Avatar
- Accented with glow-in-the-dark bioluminescence
- 4.25" Action Figure
- Comes with a unique weapon or accessory
- Includes exclusive character specific Webcam i-TAG to bring the battle scenes to 3-D life
For a sports organization, for example, a fan avatar might be used in a campaign or collectible; a retailer could offer branded virtual outfits; an entertainment company could build character-based activations. These are plausible applications of the announced capabilities, not proof that Infinite Reality launched those products or generated revenue from them. The June announcement named no integration release date, customer case study, commercial results, API or SDK.

The announcement also said Infinite Reality intended to continue nurturing Action Face’s relationship with NBALAB, the NBA research-and-development incubator. That indicates a potential sports-industry pathway, but does not establish an exclusive NBA deal, a league-wide rollout, or a product available to NBA teams or fans.

How Action Face fit the acquisition strategy
Action Face was one piece of a broader 2024 acquisition push by Infinite Reality. GamesBeat’s coverage placed the deal alongside acquisitions including 3D/web-engine company Ethereal Engine, social sports platform Stakes and the Drone Racing League. Infinite Reality later acquired Landvault and Zappar, according to subsequent industry coverage.
Together, those assets suggest an effort to assemble capabilities spanning immersive environments, sports properties, XR tools, brand experiences and digital identities. In that portfolio, Action Face could supply a personalization layer: the avatar representing a person inside a digital experience. That strategic fit is an inference from the announced assets and plans, not evidence that the businesses were technically integrated or commercially successful.

- WATERBENDER: Master the element of water with Katara (Book One)

- ARTICULATED: Features 14 points of articulation for play and display

Sports Business Journal’s later report listed transaction values of $250 million for Drone Racing League, $75 million for Ethereal Engine, $10 million for Action Face, $8 million for Stakes and $450 million for Landvault. These are reported figures, not terms confirmed in the original Action Face announcement, and should not be read as a comparable set of cash purchase prices without further detail on how each value was calculated.
What consumers and businesses should know
The acquisition announcement described Action Face’s iOS app and features as they existed in June 2024. The available public information does not establish whether the app remains operational, whether new users can sign up, what it costs, or whether figurines can still be ordered. It also does not confirm user migration plans, continued support, or whether the Action Face brand remains active.

- SOFT TUNIC: Features 22 points of articulation and a soft good tunic

- FIRE EFFECT: Also includes fire bending effect to recreate iconic battles
For anyone who previously used the service, the announcement does not explain whether photos, account data or avatars transferred to Infinite Reality, how long selfie data is retained, or how users can request deletion. Those are important questions for a face-based service: an avatar made from a selfie can raise privacy and likeness-rights concerns, but “AI-powered” alone does not tell a user what data was collected or how it was processed. Check the service’s current privacy terms and support channels before submitting a photo; do not assume an old app listing or acquisition notice answers those questions.
Businesses considering avatar activations would likewise need to confirm current availability, licensing, data-handling terms, support, export formats and any rights required for team uniforms, logos, celebrity likenesses or other branded material. The acquisition announcement does not supply a current enterprise product catalog, pricing or technical integration documentation.
What remains unconfirmed
- Whether Action Face’s consumer app and figurine service are currently available, and at what price.
- Whether Infinite Reality has launched a named product incorporating Action Face technology or published an integration roadmap.
- Whether the NBALAB relationship led to a specific product, customer deployment or league-wide offering.
- How user photos, avatars and account data were handled after the acquisition.
- Action Face’s revenue, adoption, profitability, employee continuity or contribution to Infinite Reality’s business.
Until those details are documented, the acquisition is best understood as a strategic technology purchase with a clear personalization rationale—not as proof of a current consumer service, a completed platform integration or a demonstrated financial return.
