There is no verified evidence in the material available for this article that Elon Musk has taken over OpenAI. The question is hypothetical. If it happened, whether to leave would depend on what changed: a personal boycott can be based on ownership alone, but a practical decision should weigh privacy, safety, reliability, price, governance and the cost of switching.
For individual users, leaving on principle is a legitimate choice. Developers and businesses should usually verify new policies and prepare an alternative before moving production systems. A takeover headline, by itself, would not prove that ChatGPT or the API had changed.
The short answer: decide what would make the service unacceptable
There are two different questions here: Would you use a product owned by Musk? and Would that product still meet your privacy, safety and business requirements? The first is a values decision. The second calls for evidence about policies, model behavior, contracts and operations.

That is OpenAI’s description of its current structure, not a guarantee about every future arrangement. Its public account describes Musk as a former early participant and later legal adversary and competitor. OpenAI’s structure announcement and its account of Musk and OpenAI are useful starting points, but claims in company materials should be understood as the company’s own account.
“Took it over” also needs a precise meaning. Musk personally buying control, xAI acquiring OpenAI, Musk controlling the board, a merger, Musk becoming CEO, or gaining operational influence while a nonprofit retains legal control are not equivalent events. A change in executive leadership alone would not establish a change in ownership, board control, data policy or product safeguards.
What a takeover would—and would not—tell you
Ownership could eventually affect leadership, business priorities, partnerships, moderation decisions, pricing or safety processes. But ownership alone would not establish that user data would be sold or used for training, that safeguards would be removed, or that answers would become politically biased. Those are questions to assess against actual policy changes and reproducible product behavior.
It would be reasonable to watch for possible closer integration with X or other Musk-controlled products, changed moderation standards, a different approach to controversial content, or a new balance between speed, openness and safety. These are scenarios to investigate, not verified outcomes or predictions. A model’s apparent political slant can also reflect the prompt, system instructions, retrieved sources, model updates or the way a test is designed.

Separate personal discomfort with an owner from a documented policy shift, a repeatable change in behavior and a material consequence—such as workplace risk or misinformation.
What individual ChatGPT users should check
Consumer ChatGPT data practices are not identical to API or business terms. OpenAI says consumer content may be used to improve models depending on settings; its consumer data-use FAQ explains the current policy, and its data-use controls information describes controls for model improvement. Check the current settings and terms directly rather than assuming they remain unchanged.
- Review whether conversations can be used to improve models and whether you have opted out.
- Understand temporary-chat and deletion behavior; do not assume a deleted conversation disappears immediately from every system.
- Consider what you type or upload, especially sensitive personal, financial, health or work information.
- Review permissions for connected apps, files and other features that can access information beyond a basic text prompt.
- Check account export or portability options and save anything you would need if you leave.
The OpenAI Privacy Center says its consumer privacy policy covers services such as ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro, but not ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or the API platform. Check the Privacy Center’s current scope and policy; do not transfer consumer-policy assumptions to a business or developer account.
What API developers and businesses should check
OpenAI’s current API documentation says inputs and outputs are not used to train or improve models by default unless customers opt in. It also says abuse-monitoring logs may be retained for up to 30 days by default, subject to legal requirements and available controls. Eligible customers may apply for Modified Abuse Monitoring or Zero Data Retention (ZDR), but approval and coverage are not universal. Some features retain application state even when ZDR is enabled. Review the endpoint-by-endpoint data controls and API data-sharing controls for the specific services you use.
Before relying on any policy as a safeguard, verify whether it applies to your model, endpoint and account, and get material commitments in writing. For a production system, review:
- Training and data-sharing defaults, including any opt-in settings.
- Abuse-monitoring retention, application-state storage and deletion behavior.
- Eligibility for ZDR or Modified Abuse Monitoring and any endpoint exceptions.
- Data residency, encryption, customer-managed keys, audit controls and administrator access.
- Service-level commitments, rate limits, pricing, termination rights and notice of model deprecations.
- Security incident response, subprocessors, continuity plans and your contractual obligations to customers.
OpenAI documents customer-managed keys through AWS KMS, Google Cloud KMS and Azure Key Vault for Enterprise Key Management, with product limitations. Check the current API data-control documentation and your agreement for availability and scope. A “Zero Data Retention” label is not a promise that every feature stores no state.
Businesses may have more at stake than casual users: confidential information, regulation, procurement requirements, reputational exposure and vendor concentration all matter. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Enterprise as offering centralized administration and security features; consult its Enterprise overview and your own contract. ChatGPT Enterprise workspace membership and API organization membership are separate systems, so assess governance and migration for each independently.
A practical decision scorecard

Leave promptly if you identify a concrete privacy, security, legal or safety breach that makes continued use unacceptable. Start a parallel migration if trust has fallen but the evidence is incomplete or switching is complex. Stay and monitor if controls and performance remain satisfactory. An individual can also boycott on principle without waiting for measurable harm; a company making a procurement decision should document its operational case.
When staying—or leaving—can be rational
Leaving is reasonable if ownership itself is a deal-breaker for you, or if policy, contract, security, model behavior, uptime or pricing changes make the service unsuitable. It may also make sense when customers, regulators or your security team identify risk you cannot mitigate.
Staying can be reasonable if applicable controls and contracts remain acceptable, performance is strong, and a move would introduce substantial cost or regression risk. The practical answer may differ by product: someone might stop using ChatGPT for personal reasons but retain an API integration under acceptable contractual protections—or do the reverse. If your objection is specifically to Musk’s ownership, switching from OpenAI to xAI’s Grok would not resolve it.
How to prepare without making a rushed exit
For many developers and businesses, diversification is a better first move than abruptly replacing a production system. Build the ability to route work to another provider, test that provider on real tasks, and define in advance what would trigger a full migration.
- Export or document important ChatGPT conversations and custom instructions.
- Inventory API models, endpoints, tools, embeddings, fine-tuning jobs and stored application state.
- Record prompts, system messages, evaluation data, latency targets and safety tests.
- Map sensitive data flows and remove personal or confidential inputs that are not needed.
- Build a small proof of concept with a second provider or a self-hosted model.
- Compare results on your own workload, including failure cases—not just general benchmarks.
- Confirm retention, training, residency, encryption and deletion terms for each provider in writing.
- Estimate engineering, testing, retraining and user-support costs before committing.
- Keep provider credentials and permissions separate, and avoid expanding the number of parties handling sensitive data unnecessarily.
- Set explicit switching triggers, such as a changed data policy, security incident, unacceptable price rise or repeated service failure.
Alternatives worth evaluating include Anthropic’s Claude for general assistant, coding and enterprise workflows; Google Gemini and its developer API, particularly for organizations already using Google services; and xAI or Grok, if Musk ownership is not itself the concern. Open-weight or self-hosted models can offer more control over infrastructure and data location, but require security, maintenance and evaluation capability. No alternative is automatically safer, less political or free of vendor risk; review its own policies and test its fit.
