Yes—you can usually move a Verizon postpaid line to Verizon Prepaid. Call Verizon at 800-225-5499 or visit a Verizon corporate store and request a postpaid-to-prepaid migration. Ask Verizon to keep your current number and use your existing phone if it is eligible. Do not cancel the postpaid line first; have Verizon confirm the migration and number retention before the old service is disconnected.
Before agreeing, check what “contract phone” means in your case. A month-to-month postpaid plan, a financed phone, and an older minimum-term service agreement have different financial consequences.
First, identify what “contract phone” means
People often use “contract phone” to describe several different situations. Changing the service type does not automatically erase a device balance or other obligation.

Verizon’s customer agreement says consumer postpaid service is generally month-to-month unless a minimum term was accepted. It also says canceling service after 30 days can make an outstanding financed-device balance immediately due. The agreement describes possible ETFs of up to $175, or up to $350 when the term resulted from buying an advanced device; those amounts are not automatically charged to every customer, and your agreement and enrollment date control.

Check the number, phone, and costs before switching
- Number retention: Tell Verizon you want the existing number attached to the prepaid line, and ask the representative to confirm that before proceeding. Retention may depend on the account setup. Verizon’s older support guidance describes number retention during migration but does not establish a guarantee for every account.
- Phone compatibility: Find the phone’s 15-digit IMEI by dialing
*#06#or checking its About screen, then use Verizon’s Prepaid bring-your-own-device checker. An unlocked phone is not necessarily compatible, and a locked phone is not necessarily ineligible. - Device balance and credits: Review the device-payment agreement and any promotional bill credits in My Verizon. Ask what happens to both if you migrate. Do not assume installments will continue or credits will survive.
- Account standing and agreement: Check for overdue charges and confirm whether you have a minimum-term agreement. Bring your account PIN or other security details.
- Voicemail and features: Save important voicemail messages and your greeting, and note call forwarding, Number Share, protection, international features, and any watch, tablet, or hotspot lines. Older Verizon support guidance warned that saved voicemail could be deleted during migration; verify the current treatment with Verizon rather than assuming messages will transfer.
- Final bill: Ask for the effective conversion date, final postpaid billing period, any applicable charges or credits, and whether autopay should stay enabled until the final bill clears. Do not assume the last bill will be prorated.
Verizon’s number-transfer guidance says to keep an account open until a number transfer is complete. A postpaid-to-prepaid migration is not necessarily handled like a transfer from another carrier, but the practical safeguard is the same: keep the postpaid line active until Verizon confirms the conversion and number are in place.
How to request a postpaid-to-prepaid migration
- Call Verizon at 800-225-5499, the number listed on its Prepaid FAQ, or visit a Verizon corporate store.
- Say:
“I want to migrate my Verizon postpaid line to Verizon Prepaid. I want to keep my current mobile number and, if possible, keep using this phone.”

- Before authorizing the change, ask the representative to confirm:
- the line is eligible for migration and the current number will be retained;
- the phone’s IMEI is compatible and whether its current SIM or eSIM can be used;
- the remaining device balance and what happens to installments;
- any ETF, lost promotional credits, final-bill adjustments, or conversion or activation charge;
- what happens to voicemail, connected-device lines, and account features.
- Choose a prepaid plan and complete any required identity verification and payment.
- Follow Verizon’s instructions for activation. Do not independently cancel the old line or activate an extra line unless Verizon tells you that is the required procedure.
- When service moves, test incoming and outgoing calls, SMS, mobile data, caller ID, and voicemail. Ask Verizon to confirm the postpaid line has been converted or closed as appropriate and that no unwanted duplicate line remains.
If Verizon cannot migrate the line internally, ask for the exact number-transfer procedure before opening another line. A new prepaid activation may create a second number or duplicate charges if it is not coordinated with the existing account.

- Device payoff: A separate balance from phone financing; cancellation can make an outstanding balance due under the applicable agreement.
- Lost bill credits: Promotional credits may stop when service or eligibility changes. Ask about each credit by name or amount.
- Final postpaid charges: Unpaid service, taxes, surcharges, device protection, connected-device lines, or other account adjustments may still appear. Confirm which services are ending and when.
To decide whether prepaid actually saves money, compare your full postpaid cost—not just the plan line—with the prepaid plan’s price. Include taxes and fees, device installments, protection, international use, hotspot needs, and discounts or credits you would lose.

Check Verizon’s current prepaid plan page for the terms and discounts that apply when you switch. Weigh coverage, data and hotspot terms, international use, and discounts—not just the advertised base price. Verizon also says prepaid funds may be forfeited and service disconnected if there is no call, text, or data use within 60 days after adding funds; check the FAQ for the current account rules.
If something goes wrong
- The number did not move: Contact Verizon promptly and explain that the requested migration was supposed to preserve the number. Do not cancel or make further account changes while support checks its status.
- The phone fails the compatibility check: Ask whether another SIM/eSIM or compatible phone is needed. Compatibility is determined by Verizon’s IMEI check, not merely by whether the phone is unlocked.
- The migration is rejected: Ask what eligibility issue must be resolved—such as an overdue balance, account type, or device restriction—and whether a corporate store can complete the request.
- The payoff or ETF is unexpected: Request an itemized explanation and the agreement or installment terms that support the charge before authorizing a change.
- A voicemail or feature is missing: Ask Verizon whether it can be restored. This is why saving messages and recording settings before migration matters.
- You see two active lines: Contact Verizon to identify which line holds your number and request correction of any unintended duplicate service or charges.
- Prepaid service will not activate: Confirm that the migration completed, the correct SIM/eSIM is provisioned, and calls, texts, and data are enabled on the prepaid line.
When to compare another service
Staying with Verizon Prepaid is not the only way to seek a lower bill. If Verizon’s prepaid terms do not fit your coverage, device financing, international use, or data needs, compare alternatives such as AT&T Prepaid, T-Mobile Prepaid, Visible, or Mint Mobile. Check each provider’s current prices, coverage, device compatibility, and number-transfer requirements directly; those terms can change. If you move to another carrier, do not cancel Verizon until the number transfer is complete.
