Yes—Crypto.com disclosed a confirmed security incident in January 2022 involving unauthorized withdrawals from 483 users’ accounts. The amount was commonly reported as about US$34 million at the time, and Crypto.com said it reimbursed affected users. That incident does not mean every Crypto.com account was breached or that a blockchain was hacked. A suspicious message or an individual account takeover is not, by itself, evidence of a new platform-wide breach.
The practical response is to secure the whole chain of access: your Crypto.com account, associated email, phone, and devices. Enable a passkey or authenticator-based MFA, set an anti-phishing code, keep the 24-hour withdrawal lock on, and verify every withdrawal’s asset, network, and destination.
What happened in the January 2022 Crypto.com incident?
Crypto.com reported that unauthorized withdrawals affected 483 users in January 2022. The company’s reported figures were approximately 4,836.26 ETH, 443.93 BTC, and US$66,200 in other currencies—commonly valued at roughly US$34 million at the time. The dollar amount is a historical valuation, not a present-day measure of the assets. TechCrunch’s report gives the company’s figures and response; BleepingComputer’s account also summarizes the incident.

The company said it suspended withdrawals for about 14 hours, revoked customer 2FA tokens, required customers to log in and configure 2FA again, added security-hardening measures, and introduced a delay before withdrawals to newly registered addresses. Crypto.com also said it reimbursed affected users. That reported reimbursement is not proof that the platform could not be compromised, nor a promise that every future loss will be refunded.
The incident was a reported set of unauthorized withdrawals from customer accounts—not a theft of all customer balances or an attack on the blockchain itself. The available sources confirm this event but do not establish that no other security incidents have occurred since.
Is a Crypto.com “hack” a platform breach, account takeover, or scam?
The word “hack” is often used for very different situations. Identifying what happened helps determine who to contact and what evidence to preserve.
| Type of event | What it means | Examples or clues |
|---|---|---|
| Platform security incident | A compromise or weakness affects Crypto.com’s systems or controls. | The January 2022 incident involved reported unauthorized withdrawals affecting 483 users. |
| Individual account takeover | Someone gains access to one user’s account or an active session. | Stolen credentials, compromised email, malware, a stolen device, or SIM-swap activity may be involved; a login alert or unfamiliar device can be a warning. |
| Phishing or social engineering | A person is manipulated into disclosing information, approving an action, or sending assets. | A fake security alert, support call, or account-unfreeze message asks for a code, password, remote access, or transfer. |
| User-authorized scam or mistake | The user approves a transfer after being deceived, or sends assets to the wrong destination. | The transaction may be validly authorized even though the user was misled; Crypto.com’s Account Protection Programme excludes some such losses. |
A complaint or suspicious email alone does not establish a platform breach. A wrong-network transfer, card transaction, in-account conversion, internal transfer between users, and on-chain withdrawal are also different events and can have different recovery options.
What security protections does Crypto.com offer—and what do they not guarantee?
Crypto.com’s security materials describe passkeys, MFA/2FA, device controls, withdrawal-address whitelisting, a 24-hour lock for newly whitelisted addresses, anti-phishing codes, and an account-lock process. The company also describes security infrastructure including hardware security modules and FIDO2-related measures. These are platform claims and controls, not a guarantee that an individual account cannot be compromised. See Crypto.com’s security overview and its security Help Center collection.
Authentication helps establish who is accessing an account; it does not make every transaction safe. Phishing, session theft, malware, an unlocked stolen device, a compromised email account, or a user approving a fraudulent transfer can defeat assumptions a user may make about layered security. No centralized exchange should be treated as a risk-free bank account or as a substitute for understanding custody and transaction risks.

The guidance and policy details below reflect Crypto.com Help Center material available through August 16, 2026. App and Exchange labels, requirements, and availability can vary by version, market, device, or product entity; check the current Help Center before relying on a path or eligibility rule.
How to secure your Crypto.com account
1. Use a unique password and secure your email first
Choose a Crypto.com password that has never been used elsewhere. Secure the email account tied to Crypto.com with a separate strong password and MFA. Check that mailbox for unfamiliar sessions, forwarding rules, changed recovery details, and newly authorized apps. Crypto.com’s data-privacy guidance also advises against sharing or reusing account credentials.
2. Add a passkey where supported
Crypto.com’s App documentation supports passkeys on iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later, and says users can add up to 10 passkeys. It documents using them for login, withdrawal-address whitelisting, and cryptocurrency withdrawals. The App path is Settings → Security → Passkeys → Add Passkey; authenticate with the passcode and, if requested, 2FA, then save the passkey on a supported device or security key. Details are in Crypto.com’s passkey instructions.
Passkeys use public-key cryptography and are generally more resistant to conventional credential phishing than passwords or one-time codes. They do not prevent a user from approving a malicious transaction, and losing access to the device or its unlock method can complicate account recovery. Keep an appropriate secure recovery route.
3. Enable authenticator-based MFA/2FA
Crypto.com documents time-based one-time passwords (TOTP): a six-digit code that changes about every 30 seconds. The documented App path is Settings → Security → 2-Factor Authentication → Enable 2FA. Scan the setup code or enter the secret in an authenticator app, then enter the generated code to complete setup. Crypto.com says 2FA applies to actions such as crypto withdrawals, fiat withdrawals, and wallet-address whitelisting; verification can differ between trusted and untrusted devices. Follow the current App 2FA setup guide.
Authenticator codes are stronger than password-only access, but they can still be phished in real time or exposed through a compromised device. Never give a code to someone claiming to be support. Store recovery information securely and plan how to regain access if your phone is lost.

4. Set an anti-phishing code
Crypto.com says the code appears in emails from the App and Exchange after it is enabled. The documented App path is Menu → Settings → Security → Anti-Phishing Code; choose a unique code and confirm with the passcode. Crypto.com recommends changing it every 30 days. See the anti-phishing instructions.
A code can help you spot some fake emails, but it does not authenticate every call, text, social account, web page, or in-app message. Treat a message cautiously even if it includes a code that may have been copied or exposed.
5. Leave the 24-hour withdrawal lock on
For the App, Crypto.com documents Menu → Settings → Security → 24-hour Withdrawal Lock, then toggle it on. It prevents withdrawals to newly whitelisted addresses for 24 hours. Crypto.com says turning the lock off takes effect after 24 hours and warns that users may be ineligible for its Account Protection Programme while it is disabled. See the App lock instructions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For the Exchange, the documented route is Profile icon → Security → Withdrawal Whitelist → 24-Hour Withdrawal Lock. Disabling the Exchange lock also takes effect after 24 hours, according to Crypto.com’s Exchange instructions.
The delay can give you time to notice an attacker adding a destination, but it also delays a legitimate first withdrawal to a new address. Keep it enabled unless you have a specific reason to accept that trade-off.
6. Whitelist addresses and check the asset and network
The documented App withdrawal flow is Accounts → Token Wallet → Transfer → Withdraw → External Wallet. Add or select a whitelisted address, choose the asset and network, enter or scan the destination, name the wallet, and complete the required verification. Follow Crypto.com’s withdrawal guidance.

Blockchain transfers are generally irreversible once confirmed. A wrong-network or incompatible-address loss is not necessarily a security breach and may not qualify for APP protection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →7. Review devices and account activity
Periodically check login history, trusted devices, security-setting changes, new withdrawal addresses, email or phone changes, API keys if applicable, and recent withdrawals or fiat transactions. Secure your phone with a screen lock, install operating-system updates, and avoid rooted or jailbroken devices. Crypto.com’s policy lists a jailbroken enabled device as a condition that can disqualify a protection claim.
How to recognize a fake Crypto.com message
Attackers may imitate security alerts, account-unfreeze notices, support calls, promotions, wallet-verification pages, or employment and investment offers. A familiar logo or urgent wording does not prove a message is genuine.
- Pressure to act immediately or a threat that your account will be closed.
- A request for your password, 2FA code, recovery phrase, passkey approval, or a crypto transfer.
- A request to install remote-access software or scan a QR code leading to an unfamiliar site.
- A subtly misspelled or unfamiliar domain, or a link that does not match the claimed destination.
- A missing or incorrect anti-phishing code in an email that claims to be from Crypto.com.
- A promise to unfreeze funds after you pay, send crypto, or share credentials.
Do not use contact details or links supplied in a suspicious message. Open the App directly or type a known official address yourself. Crypto.com’s anti-phishing code is one signal for emails, not proof that every message containing it is safe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you see an unauthorized login or withdrawal
- Stop interacting with the suspicious message. Do not click its links again, reply, share codes, or install software it recommends.
- Lock the account and contact official support. Use the App or the official support route at chat.crypto.com. Crypto.com’s One-Button Lock FAQ and related lock instructions describe how to restrict access. If you use a lock link from an email, verify the message independently rather than trusting it solely because it looks legitimate.
- Ask support to restrict transactions and assess any pending withdrawal. Crypto.com says support may help disable crypto transactions and attempt to stop a withdrawal; cancellation or recovery is not guaranteed. Its withdrawal guidance says to report unexpected address-whitelisting or withdrawal emails immediately.
- Change credentials and secure the email account. Change the Crypto.com password or passcode and the associated email password. Revoke unknown email sessions and check recovery settings and forwarding rules.
- Revoke suspicious access. Remove unfamiliar devices, sessions, API keys, or authenticator access where the product allows it. Contact your mobile carrier if you suspect a SIM swap or unauthorized number change.
- Preserve evidence. Save screenshots, timestamps, full email headers, transaction details, wallet addresses, device alerts, and support-ticket numbers. Avoid deleting messages or resetting devices before recording relevant information.
- Find the transaction hash if funds left on-chain. Crypto.com’s withdrawal instructions say to open the transaction in the Token Wallet or transaction history, select the withdrawal-address link, and view or copy the TxHash in a blockchain explorer. The hash identifies the transaction and network for support, law enforcement, or a receiving platform.
- Notify other relevant parties. If the destination is identifiable, contact the receiving exchange or wallet provider. File a local police or cybercrime report, and contact your bank or card issuer if fiat or card funds are involved.
When an account is locked, Crypto.com says App and Exchange access is restricted, withdrawals and new address whitelisting are restricted, and normal login using the account email may not be available until the lock is resolved. For many withdrawals, Crypto.com says processing is automated and usually takes no longer than 2–3 hours, but timing varies; do not assume support can stop a request after submission.
Can Crypto.com reimburse stolen funds?
Crypto.com describes its Account Protection Programme (APP) as goodwill protection rather than automatically applicable insurance. Its policy says eligible users may receive protection up to US$250,000 equivalent, subject to the applicable terms, discretion, jurisdiction, and product eligibility. The cap is not a promise that a claim will be paid. Read the APP policy and terms for the applicable account and market.

Conditions in the policy available April 8, 2026
The policy lists, among other requirements, that MFA or passkeys for applicable transaction types and an anti-phishing code must have been enabled at least 21 days before the alleged unauthorized transaction, and the 24-hour withdrawal lock must be enabled. It also lists a good-standing account, no jailbroken enabled device, a local police report (with translation if it is not in English), completion of Crypto.com’s security questionnaire, and contacting Crypto.com to initiate a claim within 30 working days. The loss must result from cryptocurrency or fiat being transferred out by an unauthorized third party.
Examples the policy covers or excludes
Examples of potentially covered events include an attacker gaining access through hacking or phishing and transferring cryptocurrency to an external wallet, using fiat funds to buy crypto and transfer it away, or making an unauthorized fiat transfer to a third-party bank account. Eligibility remains subject to the policy’s conditions and Crypto.com’s determination.
The policy excludes or may exclude a user deceived into authorizing a transaction, assets mistakenly sent to the wrong address, an unauthorized conversion that does not transfer funds out of the Crypto.com account, and fraud or abuse involving third-party access or conduct contrary to applicable terms. A validly authorized transfer can therefore fall outside protection even when the user was deceived.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAvailability depends on location and account type
The policy available April 8, 2026 lists the United States as available only for Prime users. Availability varies by jurisdiction and product entity, so U.S. users should not assume an ordinary App account qualifies. Do not wait until after a loss to enable controls subject to the policy’s 21-day prior-enablement condition.
App and Exchange instructions are not interchangeable
Crypto.com has distinct App and Exchange products, and their security screens and controls are not always in the same place. The withdrawal-lock paths above are product-specific; the Exchange also has separate passkey instructions, updated in March 2026, at Crypto.com Exchange passkey guidance. Check the help article for the exact product you use and confirm the current labels in your own version of the App or Exchange.
