No. Sharp is a Japanese company controlled by Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry, widely known as Foxconn. Sharp has operations in mainland China, and some Sharp products may be made there, but neither fact makes Sharp a mainland Chinese company. The key is to distinguish the company’s Japanese legal identity from its Taiwanese parent and its global manufacturing network.

Sharp’s corporate overview identifies the company as Sharp Corporation, headquartered in Osaka. The company was founded by Tokuji Hayakawa in Tokyo on September 15, 1912, and incorporated in 1935. Its name comes from the “Ever-Ready Sharp Pencil,” an early product. Sharp’s corporate profile lists its business in telecommunications equipment, electrical and electronic equipment, and electronic components.

Why Sharp is still a Japanese company
A company’s nationality is usually grounded in its legal identity and place of incorporation—not simply who owns shares in it or where a product is assembled. Sharp remains a Japanese corporation with its headquarters in Japan and a listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Foreign ownership did not erase those facts or turn Sharp into a Chinese legal entity.
Sharp is also a multinational business, not a company operating only in Japan. It reported 34,549 consolidated employees as of March 31, 2026, including 14,657 in Japan and 19,892 overseas. Those figures describe an international footprint, while its legal corporate identity remains Japanese.

Who owns Sharp? The 2016 change in control
Sharp’s parent company is Hon Hai Precision Industry, the Taiwan-based group commonly called Foxconn. In 2016, Sharp issued new shares to Hon Hai and related entities as part of a major investment. At the time, the transaction gave Hon Hai and associated entities approximately 66% of Sharp’s voting rights, and Hon Hai became Sharp’s parent company. The 66% figure describes that transaction-era position; it should not be treated as an undated statement of today’s exact ownership.
The shift followed a developing relationship. Sharp and Hon Hai announced a strategic partnership in 2012, including cooperation involving Sharp’s Sakai LCD plant in Osaka. In 2016, Sharp announced the proposed parent-company change, the parties set out the investment, and Sharp later disclosed completion of the share issuance. Sharp’s completion notice confirms the change.
Current shareholder figures should be dated and read separately from the 2016 transaction. Sharp’s register as of March 31, 2026 listed Hon Hai Precision Industry at 22.32%, Foxconn (Far East) Limited at 11.81%, Foxconn Technology Pte. Ltd. at 9.96%, and SIO International Holdings Limited at 10.07%. Sharp separately identifies Hon Hai as its parent company. Is Foxconn Chinese or Taiwanese?
Hon Hai Precision Industry is Taiwanese. Its official corporate profile says it was established in Taiwan in 1974 and is headquartered in New Taipei City. The group has extensive operations and manufacturing facilities in mainland China, as well as in countries including Japan, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, and the United States.
That distinction matters: a Taiwan-based multinational can run factories in mainland China without being a mainland Chinese corporation. Likewise, Sharp can be Japanese while belonging to a Taiwan-based corporate group. “Chinese” should not be used as a catch-all for East Asian companies or for products manufactured in China.
Are Sharp products made in China?
There is no single country-of-origin answer for every product bearing the Sharp name. Manufacturing can vary by product category, exact model, sales region, and production year. Sharp and its group companies have operations in multiple countries, and Hon Hai’s manufacturing footprint is also international. Some products or components may be made in China; others may be produced or assembled elsewhere. The logo alone does not establish where a particular unit was made.

- Check the product and packaging label. Look for “Made in,” “Assembled in,” or another country-of-origin statement.
- Match the full model number. Use the model number on the unit or box when checking the official product page for your region.
- Check the regional documentation. The product page or manual may provide model-specific details, but do not assume that a general brand page covers every market or production run.
- Separate design, assembly, and ownership. “Designed in Japan,” “assembled in Vietnam,” “made in China,” and “owned by a Taiwan-based parent” describe different things.
Regional licensing and distribution can add another wrinkle: a Sharp-branded product may be manufactured, distributed, or licensed through different entities depending on the market. Check the specific product’s manufacturer information and local warranty terms rather than assuming every Sharp-logo product was made by Sharp Corporation itself.

Corporate nationality alone does not tell you whether a product is good, secure, easy to repair, or suitable for your household. If you have a specific concern, evaluate it at the product and market level:
- Country of origin: Verify the exact unit’s label instead of inferring origin from the brand.
- Warranty and repairs: Check who provides the warranty in your country and whether a local service network covers the model.
- Parts and consumables: For products such as air purifiers, check replacement-filter availability and expected local support.
- Smart features and privacy: Review the device’s own privacy settings and policies. A parent company’s nationality is not, by itself, evidence of how a particular product handles data.
- Product fit: Compare specifications, energy use, return terms, and support against other models in the same category.
If you require a product made in Japan, confirm that requirement against the exact model and unit before buying. Sharp’s Japanese identity does not mean every Sharp product is made in Japan.
The clear distinction
Sharp’s history, headquarters, legal identity, and stock-market listing are Japanese. Its parent company, Hon Hai/Foxconn, is Taiwanese. Both companies operate in a global supply chain that includes mainland China and other countries. These facts are compatible; none alone determines where a particular Sharp product was manufactured.
