Yes—if you buy it at a sensible discount and the condition is clear. In August 2026, Google’s US Store lists Certified Refurbished Pixel 8 phones for $459 (128GB) and $509 (256GB), with a one-year warranty. The phone’s compact 6.2-inch screen, strong main camera and promised software support through roughly October 2030 remain appealing. Its age makes battery condition, seller terms and price just as important as the specifications. For most buyers, an official certified refurb or a substantially cheaper, well-documented unlocked unit makes more sense than expensive new old stock.
Is the Pixel 8 still worth buying in 2026?
The Pixel 8 is a reasonable buy for someone who wants a relatively compact Android phone, a dependable point-and-shoot camera and years of promised updates. It is a less compelling choice for buyers prioritizing battery longevity, demanding gaming, optical zoom or the newest hardware.
Google’s seven-year update policy covers Pixel 8 and later phones from the date each first became available on the US Google Store. The Pixel 8 launched in the US on October 12, 2023, so the policy implies support through approximately October 2030—not a guarantee that its battery, performance or repair options will remain ideal for that long. - Look elsewhere: You need telephoto zoom, the best battery or sustained gaming performance, or a newer phone is available for a similar total cost.
- Be cautious: Used and refurbished units can have materially different battery condition, repair history, warranty and carrier status.
IP68 describes water and dust resistance when the phone is in its original condition; it is not a promise that a used or repaired device is waterproof. Google says resistance can diminish or be lost through wear, damage, repair or disassembly. Google’s device specifications and durability notes explain the qualification.

Google’s Pixel 8 specifications include controlled-test battery and charging claims. Its stated “24+ hours” and “up to 72 hours” with Extreme Battery Saver are not guarantees of an individual phone’s runtime.
How much should you pay?
Google’s US Store listed Certified Refurbished Pixel 8 models at $459 for 128GB and $509 for 256GB when checked in August 2026. The original retail price was $699. Prices and stock can change; confirm the live listing before purchase. Check Google’s refurbished Pixel 8 listing.

These are decision thresholds, not observed averages for the US resale market. New old-stock pricing, retailer refurbishment, private-party listings and carrier promotions are not directly comparable: condition, warranty, lock status, trade-in rules, plan requirements and fees can change the real cost. Do not mistake monthly bill credits for an unconditional discount.
Which storage size should you choose?
128GB
Choose 128GB if you use cloud photo storage, keep a moderate number of apps and downloads, or save substantially on the purchase. System software reduces usable capacity, and there is no microSD card slot. 4K video, games, offline maps and downloaded media can fill space quickly.

256GB
Choose 256GB if you record lots of video, keep large games or offline media, or expect to hold the phone for years. As a buying rule of thumb—not a Google pricing rule—paying roughly $50–$75 more for 256GB can be worthwhile if you will use the extra space. At Google’s listed refurb prices, the difference is $50.
Google Certified Refurbished, retailer refurbished or used?
Google Certified Refurbished
This is the clearest low-risk route when stock is available. Google says its certified refurbished devices undergo quality testing, receive genuine Google parts where needed and come with a one-year warranty and current software. The Pixel 8 listing says the device is unlocked and compatible with any carrier, subject to the carrier and location details that affect actual service. These claims apply to Google’s program, not every phone described elsewhere as “renewed.” See Google’s refurbished-device terms.
Retailer-refurbished or “renewed”
Before ordering, establish who refurbished the phone and what “tested” means. Ask whether the battery was replaced or tested to a stated threshold, whether the screen is original, what the warranty excludes, how long the return window lasts, whether the phone is unlocked, and whether it is a US model. A seller’s grading label alone does not answer those questions.

Private-party used
Buy only when the discount compensates for the added risk. Get the IMEI and check it with the target carrier; ask whether the phone is paid off and free of account locks; and agree in writing on a return arrangement. Do not keep a phone that requests the previous owner’s credentials after a factory reset.

Where should you buy?
- Start with Google Certified Refurbished. It combines Google’s stated refurbishment process, one-year warranty and unlocked status. Verify live stock, price and terms at the Google Store listing.
- Compare authorized retailers. Confirm who stands behind the refurbishment or warranty and whether returns cover defects discovered after setup.
- Evaluate carrier offers by total cost. Credits may require an eligible plan, trade-in condition, activation and continued service; leaving early can forfeit remaining credits, and the phone may be locked under carrier policy. Add the required plan-cost difference over the promotion term, taxes and fees, then subtract actual credits and trade-in value. Compare that result with buying unlocked outright.
- Use marketplaces only with protection. Require a return window and verify the phone rather than relying on a listing’s “unlocked” or “like new” wording.
Will an unlocked Pixel 8 work with your US carrier?
Factory-unlocked means the phone was not tied to a carrier at sale; carrier-unlocked means a carrier later released it under its policy. “Compatible” does not guarantee every band, feature or level of service. Financed or account-locked devices may be blocked or unusable if the original account is delinquent.
- Confirm the exact model number and check the IMEI with the carrier before paying.
- Check support for the carrier’s 5G and VoLTE service in your area, plus eSIM if you need it.
- Ask whether the device is fully paid off and whether it is factory-unlocked or carrier-unlocked.
- Test a physical SIM or activate an eSIM before the return deadline.
Google Fi says most unlocked Android and Apple devices work with Fi and provides a compatibility checker; eSIM use depends on device compatibility. Check its bring-your-own-phone information rather than assuming every imported Pixel has identical network support.
What to expect from the camera, battery and performance
Camera
The Pixel 8 is best viewed as a strong point-and-shoot camera phone, particularly for its main camera’s computational processing, HDR, skin tones, night photography and portraits. Its two rear cameras are a wide and ultrawide; there is no dedicated telephoto lens, so distant subjects are a poor reason to choose it over a Pro model.

Google lists editing and camera features including Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Magic Editor and Best Take. Availability and behavior can depend on the Android and Google Photos versions, mode, language, account and region. Do not assume every feature works offline or on every image. Battery
Google’s published battery figures come from controlled conditions; actual runtime varies with battery age, signal strength, 5G, screen brightness, refresh rate, navigation, camera use, gaming, hotspot use, background apps and temperature. On a used or refurbished phone, battery condition matters more than its original rated capacity. Use the return period for normal day-to-day use rather than treating a seller’s vague “good battery” description as proof.
Everyday performance and gaming
Tensor G3 supports the Pixel’s everyday software experience, but buyers who regularly play demanding games or need sustained heavy workloads should compare newer hardware. A long update promise keeps software support distinct from battery endurance, thermal behavior or modem efficiency.

Google’s seven-year policy for Pixel 8 and later covers OS, security and Feature Drop updates, beginning at the model’s US Google Store availability. Because the Pixel 8 became available in the US in October 2023, the policy implies support through approximately October 2030. That is not the same as a promise of seven years of ideal battery life, repair-part availability or app support. Read Google’s update policy.
Google also lists an Extended Repair Program for certain Pixel 8 devices, covering eligible devices for three years after the original retail purchase date. It is limited to qualifying devices and issues, not a blanket extension of every owner’s warranty. Check the program’s eligibility terms. For warranty status and repair options, use Google’s warranty and repair guidance; the route can depend on where the phone was bought.
Consider protection only after comparing the premium, deductible, claim limits and replacement terms with the phone’s price and the seller’s warranty. Google Fi’s referenced US protection terms list Pixel 8 in an $8-per-month tier, but plan availability and terms can change; verify them at enrollment in the plan document.
Inspect the phone during the return period
- Confirm identity and storage: check Settings → About phone against the listing and verify the IMEI and advertised capacity.
- Check ownership and lock status: insert a different carrier’s SIM if possible; confirm the device is paid off and can complete a factory reset without asking for the prior owner’s account.
- Inspect the display and touch: look for burn-in, dead pixels, tint, cracks and unresponsive areas.
- Test charging and data: connect USB-C, check for intermittent charging, and test data transfer if relevant.
- Test cameras and biometrics: focus each rear camera and the front camera; check fingerprint and face unlock.
- Test connections and calls: check cellular data and calls, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC, along with eSIM if you plan to use it.
- Use it normally for battery signs: watch for unusually rapid idle drain, abnormal heat during light use, unexpected shutdowns, charging interruptions or swelling/screen separation. Return a device showing these warning signs.
- Keep the paperwork: retain the seller’s written condition, warranty and return terms until you are satisfied.
Do not deliberately expose the phone to water to test its resistance. A history of opening, repair or damage can make the original IP rating unreliable.
Which alternatives make more sense?
Compare the Pixel 8 with current models at their actual checkout prices, storage and trade-in terms. Google’s Store presents the Pixel 10a and Pixel 9a as active alternatives, but live prices and promotions can change. Check the Pixel 10a page and Google’s Pixel 10a versus 9a comparison before deciding.
- Choose a newer A-series Pixel if newer hardware and a longer remaining support runway matter more than the Pixel 8’s premium features or compact form.
- Consider a Pixel 8 Pro or another Pro phone if optical zoom is important; the base Pixel 8 does not have a telephoto camera.
- Consider a lower-priced refurbished Pixel 8a if budget is the priority and you do not need the Pixel 8’s premium display, wireless charging or higher-end camera hardware. Google’s refurbished-device page listed Pixel 8a models from $339 when checked in August 2026; verify live stock and price on Google’s refurbished-device page.
- Choose another brand or a newer generation if demanding gaming, battery endurance or modem performance outweighs the Pixel 8’s size and camera strengths.
Accessories to budget for
The standard Pixel 8 package does not include a wall charger. Google’s roughly 50%-in-30-minutes charging claim uses a compatible 30W USB-C Power Delivery PPS charger sold separately. Choose a charger and cable for protocol compatibility and quality, not wattage alone; the phone draws only what it supports. Google’s product sheet identifies the charging condition.
A protective case and, if desired, a screen protector are the most practical additions. Some protectors can affect fingerprint recognition. Add a Qi charger, car charger or power bank only if your use calls for one.
