Microsoft 365 Premium is Microsoft’s top individual subscription: in the United States, Microsoft lists it at $19.99 a month and bundles Office apps, OneDrive storage, Defender security and advanced Copilot features. It can cover up to six people for general Microsoft 365 benefits, but the key AI features in apps such as Word and Excel belong to the subscription owner—not all six people. Premium is a personal plan, not a business Copilot license.
What Microsoft 365 Premium includes
Microsoft announced Premium on October 1, 2025, as its highest tier for individual and household subscriptions. Microsoft positions it as combining Microsoft 365 Family and Copilot Pro benefits, with more advanced AI features and higher allowances for selected uses. The US plan comparison reviewed on August 18, 2026 lists Premium at $19.99 per month. Prices, taxes, billing options and promotions can differ by country and at checkout, so confirm the renewal terms before subscribing. Microsoft’s announcement and individual plans page are the reference points for current terms.
- Apps: Desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- Storage: Up to 1 TB of OneDrive storage per person, up to 6 TB total when shared across six people.
- Security: Microsoft Defender benefits included with the subscription.
- Copilot: AI assistance in supported Microsoft 365 apps, plus advanced features and higher usage allowances for selected capabilities.
- Early access: Some experimental features may be available through Microsoft’s Frontier program; experimental features can change or be withdrawn.

The arithmetic equivalent of $19.99 paid for 12 months is $239.88, but that is not a quoted annual plan price. Check your account’s checkout page for the price and renewal date that apply to you.

Who gets Premium’s AI features?
Premium can cover up to six people for Microsoft 365 sharing, but its main in-app AI benefits are for the subscription owner. Family members can use shared Microsoft 365 apps and their own storage allocation, but Microsoft restricts AI features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Designer on Family and Premium to the owner. Shared users may have access to Copilot Chat on the web or in an app, depending on circumstances, but that is not the same as the owner’s in-app entitlement or higher AI allowance. Microsoft’s subscription FAQ explains the sharing distinction.
This is the most important point for families: Premium is not six separate Copilot subscriptions. If a spouse or child cannot see Copilot in Word while signed into their own account, they may be a shared member rather than the subscription owner. They can use available free Copilot features or obtain a separate eligible subscription; the family plan does not let the owner assign a second full AI seat.

How Premium differs from Personal and Family
Personal already covers one user’s Office apps, OneDrive storage, Defender and standard Copilot integration. Family extends core sharing benefits to up to six people. Premium’s extra value is concentrated in advanced AI capabilities and higher allowances for selected features—not a different or better version of the Office apps.

Premium may be financially sensible if one person values its advanced AI and the household would otherwise pay for Family plus a separate Copilot subscription. Do not assume that existing subscriptions will be prorated or converted on a particular schedule: the credit, renewal date and migration terms depend on the account’s current offer.
What the advanced Copilot tier adds
Microsoft differentiates the individual plans by both the tools available and the allowances for selected features. Premium includes access to advanced agents such as Researcher and Analyst, and Microsoft has announced or described additional experiences including Actions and Photos Agent. Features can be rolling out, forthcoming, experimental or region-restricted; an announcement does not mean every subscriber can use every tool immediately. Premium is described as having the highest usage allowances among Microsoft’s individual plans for selected capabilities. That does not mean unlimited use. Microsoft uses AI credits and feature-specific limits, and limits can differ for image generation, voice, research, vision, audio and agent actions. Check the live plan and feature documentation rather than relying on a single general allowance.

What Copilot can do in Microsoft 365
- Word: Draft, rewrite, summarize or reorganize a document using your instructions and source material.
- Excel: Ask questions about data, get analysis or help with formulas. Microsoft says Copilot in Excel requires AutoSave to be on and the workbook to be saved in OneDrive.
- PowerPoint: Develop a presentation from a prompt or a referenced Word document.
- Outlook: Draft messages and summarize lengthy email threads.
- OneNote: Organize notes and support planning.
- Designer and related apps: Generate or edit images where the feature is supported.
- Chat and agents: Research information, organize work or perform selected tasks, depending on feature and availability.
Copilot is assistance, not a guarantee of correct work. Verify facts and citations, check Excel formulas and analysis, read summaries against the original, and review email tone before sending. Do not put sensitive material into a prompt unless you understand the account and service’s privacy terms.

Free Copilot can provide general AI chat, web-grounded answers, writing help, image creation and Edge webpage summaries, with some benefits depending on whether you are signed in. A Microsoft 365 subscription adds integration into personal productivity apps; Premium adds advanced features and the highest consumer-tier allowances for selected functions. Microsoft’s comparison describes the distinction.

Microsoft 365 Premium is not Microsoft 365 Copilot for work. Organizations use business licensing for work-data grounding, administration, user-level access management and organizational security and compliance controls. Premium is for personal or household use; it does not give a company tenant controls or automatically grant access to work email, Teams, meetings or SharePoint. A freelancer may use Premium with personal files, but a company needing managed access should evaluate Microsoft 365 Copilot’s organizational service.

Microsoft announced that it would stop selling Copilot Pro as it simplified its individual lineup, directing subscribers seeking the combined Family-and-Copilot offering toward Premium. Premium is positioned as the successor bundle, with newer features and higher allowances. That announcement does not establish that every legacy subscriber is automatically migrated or receives a particular credit.
If you have Copilot Pro, Family or Personal, open your Microsoft account’s Subscriptions page before changing anything. Confirm which account owns each plan, whether Copilot Pro remains active, what Premium costs for your account, and how the switch affects billing and renewal. Do not cancel an existing subscription until the account page confirms the replacement terms.
Availability, prerequisites and controls
- Account and license: The user must be signed into the account with the relevant subscription entitlement. A missing Copilot button can reflect account, license refresh, app version, platform or rollout differences.
- Excel: Turn on AutoSave and store the workbook in OneDrive for Copilot in Excel.
- Platform, language and region: Features differ by device, language and location; some agents may be region-limited.
- Age: Microsoft’s rules can make AI features unavailable to users below applicable minimum-age requirements.
- Rollout: Features can arrive gradually, so two eligible users may not see the same controls at the same time.
- Turning it off: Microsoft provides controls to turn Copilot off in apps including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This is not the same as removing Copilot from Windows, disabling every Microsoft AI feature, canceling the subscription or changing settings for every family member. Microsoft says the same controls do not turn off Copilot features in Designer, Notepad or Paint.
For Excel troubleshooting, first confirm that you are signed into the subscription owner’s account, update the Office apps, refresh the license if needed, enable AutoSave and save the workbook to OneDrive. Then check whether the feature is supported on your device and in your region. Microsoft documents the workbook requirements in its Copilot FAQ.
What the unified Copilot app rollout means in 2026
Status checked August 18, 2026: Microsoft’s unified Copilot experience is rolling out in stages, rather than appearing identically for every user. The rollout may change navigation and sign-in behavior across personal and work contexts. Windows Central reported on August 13 that mobile was first and Windows and macOS were initially opt-in; treat those details as rollout reporting, not a guarantee about your device. Who should consider Premium?
- Consider it if you work heavily in Microsoft 365, want AI inside your documents and spreadsheets, will use advanced research or analysis features, and one primary user will consume most of the AI benefit.
- Stay with Personal or Family if Office, storage and security are the main needs and standard Copilot access is enough.
- Use Free Copilot if you mainly want occasional chat, web answers, writing assistance or image creation outside Office.
- Look at business licensing if a company needs centralized administration, access to organizational data, employee-level assignment or compliance controls.
- Compare another ecosystem or assistant if you do not work in Microsoft apps. Standalone assistants and Google Workspace may suit different workflows, but their current prices and feature terms are not compared here.
