Apple says it is working with Samsung at Samsung’s Austin, Texas, semiconductor fab on a new chipmaking technology intended to improve the power efficiency and performance of Apple products, including iPhones sold worldwide. Announced on August 6, 2025, the project is part of Apple’s broader U.S. manufacturing program—not a confirmed move of Apple’s main iPhone processors from TSMC to Samsung. Apple has not disclosed the chip type, production schedule, or volume.
What Apple announced—and what it did not
In its August 6, 2025 announcement, Apple said it was working with Samsung at Samsung’s fab in Austin, Texas, on an innovative new chipmaking technology that had not been used anywhere in the world. Apple said the resulting chips would help optimize power and performance in Apple products, including iPhones shipped around the world.
That is the confirmed scope. Apple did not identify the chips as A-series or M-series processors, image sensors, modems, or any other specific component. It also did not disclose a process node, production volume, start date, yield target, or iPhone model. “Working with Samsung” could involve process development, manufacturing, engineering, or a combination; Apple’s announcement does not spell out the commercial arrangement or establish that Samsung is the sole manufacturer.

So the project is significant, but claims that Samsung will make Apple’s main application processors—or that the Austin work is a confirmed replacement for another supplier—go beyond the public details. Apple’s stated objective of improving power and performance is not a measured result or a guarantee of longer battery life, faster devices, or lower prices.

Austin is not Taylor
Apple named Samsung’s Austin fab as the project location. Samsung has operated semiconductor facilities in the Austin area for decades; the company’s 2024 economic-impact report says it has invested about $18 billion in operating two Austin-campus fabs since 1996.
Samsung’s newer Central Texas expansion near Taylor is a separate facility. The Austin announcement should not be casually relabeled as a Taylor project, and neither site should be treated as a single, region-wide Apple-Samsung factory. Apple’s statement specifically identifies Austin.

One project within Apple’s $600 billion U.S. commitment
The Samsung collaboration sits inside Apple’s American Manufacturing Program (AMP), announced alongside a broader commitment to invest $600 billion in the United States over four years. Apple’s August 2025 announcement included a new $100 billion commitment as part of that expanded total. AMP is a network of supplier and manufacturing investments, not one plant and not a plan to move all Apple device production to the United States.
The program spans different parts of the supply chain: semiconductor wafers and fabrication, manufacturing equipment, wireless and power-management components, chip packaging and testing, glass, rare-earth magnets, sensors, and other inputs. Apple said its U.S. supply chain supported more than 450,000 supplier and partner jobs and that it planned to hire 20,000 U.S. employees over four years, mainly in areas such as research and development, silicon engineering, software, AI, and machine learning. Those are company-reported figures and plans, not a count of jobs created by the Samsung project alone.

Apple has continued to announce AMP milestones. Its March 2026 update added partners, while its February 2026 update described other U.S. manufacturing activity. Those later announcements did not publicly add technical details about the Austin project.
How Samsung fits alongside Apple’s other U.S. suppliers
Apple’s domestic silicon effort is distributed among companies, facilities, and manufacturing stages. The distinction matters: a wafer supplier, a chip fab, a packaging plant, and a maker of wireless components do different jobs.

The TSMC and Broadcom figures concern their respective projects, not Samsung’s Austin collaboration. Apple’s February and July updates are useful context for the wider program, but they do not establish that the Samsung project has entered volume production.

Why more U.S. chip capacity matters—and its limits
Apple’s public case for AMP emphasizes domestic investment, advanced manufacturing, jobs, and a broader U.S. silicon ecosystem. More U.S.-based capacity could also diversify production locations, give Apple and suppliers closer access to some manufacturing and engineering work, and make parts of the supply chain less exposed to cross-border disruption. Those are plausible strategic benefits, not proof that Apple has eliminated dependence on overseas suppliers or that the Samsung project was announced for any single geopolitical or cost-related reason.

“Made in the U.S.” also describes a manufacturing stage, not necessarily a wholly domestic supply chain. A chip fabricated in Texas or Arizona can still depend on equipment, chemicals, materials, intellectual property, or other inputs originating elsewhere. Wafers may be made in one state, chips fabricated in another, and finished components packaged or tested at another site. Those components may then be incorporated into devices assembled outside the United States.
Apple’s February 2026 update said AMP partners had sourced more than 20 billion U.S.-made chips from 24 factories across 12 states. That figure illustrates the program’s breadth; it should not be read as a count of chips from Samsung’s Austin project. Domestic capacity can reduce exposure to some risks, but it does not create geographic independence across every stage.
What consumers and investors can reasonably take from the news
For consumers, the announcement signals a potential source of additional chipmaking capacity and a technology Apple says is aimed at power and performance. It does not yet tell buyers which products will use the chips, when they might appear, or whether they will change battery life, performance, repairability, or price. Nor does production of components in Texas mean the finished iPhone will be assembled there.

Its importance will depend on details not disclosed so far, including the technology involved, whether it reaches reliable commercial production, and the scale at which Apple uses it. A new process may also face the ordinary challenges of ramping yields, reliability, and capacity; the announcement alone does not show how those will be resolved.
As of Apple’s public AMP updates through March 2026 and its separate July 2026 Broadcom announcement, the company had not publicly identified the Austin chip category, process, production volume, or launch timing. The careful description remains: Apple says it is collaborating with Samsung at the Austin fab on a new chipmaking technology for chips intended to optimize power and performance in Apple products worldwide.
