Group14 Technologies and German battery-cell maker CustomCells announced a multi-year agreement on July 8, 2024, for CustomCells to procure Group14’s SCC55 silicon battery material. The companies said the contract value was expected to exceed $300 million, with supply planned to continue beyond 2030. That figure is expected value for future material supply—not a $300 million investment in Group14 or an upfront payment.

What the $300 million agreement covers

The agreement is a supply contract: Group14 provides SCC55, a silicon-based anode material, for CustomCells to use in battery cells. It is not a deal to buy finished batteries. The companies described the contract value as expected to exceed $300 million and said the supply horizon would extend beyond 2030. The announcement does not publish the total tonnage, annual delivery schedule, price per kilogram, minimum purchases, termination terms, or whether the agreement is take-or-pay. As a result, the headline figure cannot be translated into annual sales or cash Group14 has already received.

The partnership was not starting from scratch. Group14 and CustomCells had worked together since 2020, and CustomCells had put SCC55 into prototype cells for customer testing before announcing the agreement. That history makes the deal more substantial than an initial sample order, but prototype testing, customer qualification, and sustained commercial production are distinct stages.

How the material fits into a battery

A lithium-ion cell has an anode and a cathode. SCC55 is intended for the anode; Group14 describes it as a silicon battery material designed to support more silicon than conventional graphite-based approaches. Silicon can store more lithium than graphite in theory, which is why battery developers are interested in it. The challenge is retaining durability and making the material work reliably in manufacturable cells at useful silicon loadings.

SCC55 is not a complete battery, nor should it be described as a pure-silicon anode. It is a silicon-based material or silicon-carbon composite intended for lithium-ion cells. Group14 and CustomCells have promoted potential benefits such as higher energy density and faster charging, but those are company claims, not a guarantee that every finished cell—or vehicle pack—will deliver a particular improvement. Cell design, silicon loading, manufacturing conditions, and use all affect results.

Who are Group14 and CustomCells?

Woodinville, Washington-based Group14 develops and manufactures silicon-based battery-anode materials, including SCC55. Its manufacturing strategy spans the United States and South Korea. In a 2024 update, the company said it was shipping SCC55 from South Korea to more than 100 customers worldwide, while its Woodinville factory had been operating since 2021. Customer counts and performance claims in company releases are company-reported rather than independent measures of commercial adoption.

CustomCells is a German battery-cell developer and manufacturer, not simply a battery-pack assembler. In announcing the supply deal, it described work on high-silicon-content cells, including 4695 cylindrical cells, for areas such as electric vehicles, e-mobility, and aviation. It also discussed a planned U.S. factory with capacity of up to 2 GWh. That was a plan announced in 2024, not confirmation that the facility was built or operating. The deal announcement did not identify a specific automaker or vehicle program.

Why the agreement matters—and what it does not prove

For Group14, a multi-year customer commitment can provide a demand signal that helps justify investment in factories and production scale. For CustomCells, it points to a planned source of advanced anode material for future cell programs. More broadly, it is evidence that silicon-based materials are progressing beyond laboratory research and sample evaluation into commercial planning.

But the value of a supply agreement depends on its terms and execution. A contract’s expected lifetime value is not the same as recognized revenue, cash received, or delivered material. The public disclosure does not show how much CustomCells must purchase in any given year. Nor does the agreement establish that cells containing SCC55 have passed every customer qualification step, entered mass production, or reached vehicles on the road.

Several risks remain relevant: factory ramp-ups can take time; automotive and aviation customers may require lengthy validation; silicon’s capacity potential must be balanced against cycle life, swelling, and process compatibility; and production plans or battery programs can change. Group14 has reported cycle-life results across customer programs, but without public protocols, cell formats, loading levels, and independent validation, those figures should not be treated as a universal prediction for SCC55 cells.

Group14’s manufacturing progress since the deal

The later manufacturing updates strengthen the context for the 2024 announcement, but they do not establish that the CustomCells contract has been fully performed:

  • 2020: Group14 and CustomCells began working together.
  • July 8, 2024: They announced the expected $300 million-plus, multi-year SCC55 supply agreement.
  • September 2024: Group14 said it was shipping SCC55 from its South Korean facility to more than 100 customers worldwide. It also described the Moses Lake, Washington, facility as expected to add 4,000 tonnes of annual capacity in 2025; that was a forward-looking expectation at the time, not evidence of current output.
  • August 2025: Group14 announced a $463 million Series D financing and said it had acquired SK Inc.’s remaining 75% stake in the South Korean joint venture, taking full ownership of the factory.
  • March 2026: Group14 announced that the South Korean factory had begun EV-scale SCC55 production. The company said the facility was designed for 2,000 metric tons per year, equivalent to approximately 10 GWh of battery capacity. Designed capacity is not the same as actual output at that rate.

The 2025 financing is a separate event from the CustomCells supply contract. Group14’s Series D announcement describes capital raised and the ownership change; the 2024 deal describes expected revenue from future supply. In March 2026, Group14 said its second U.S. facility in Moses Lake was nearing completion, so it should not be presented as fully operational on the basis of that update. See the company’s South Korean production announcement for the stated capacity and status.

Demand signals need careful interpretation

Group14 also disclosed a separate set of offtake agreements in June 2024 with five unnamed EV and consumer-electronics cell manufacturers, reporting more than $300 million in minimum commitments. That was a different announcement from the July CustomCells agreement, which was separately described as expected to exceed $300 million. The two disclosures should not be merged into one contract or treated as the same $300 million. Group14 also said customers had forecast SCC55 demand above four times its projected production capacity by 2027; that was a company forecast, not an industrywide demand estimate. Batteries International reported on those June offtake commitments and the company’s forecast.

For readers evaluating the business significance, the key distinctions are binding terms versus headline value, qualified cells versus prototypes, delivered tonnage versus forecast demand, and factory nameplate capacity versus actual production. The public CustomCells announcement does not provide enough detail to calculate annual revenue, margins, or tonnage. It also does not say that all CustomCells products—or any named customer’s vehicle—will use SCC55.
