Yes. A personal Microsoft account is free to create and use. You can register a new Outlook.com address or use an existing address such as Gmail or Yahoo. You do not need to buy Microsoft 365 just to have the account or use Microsoft’s basic free services.
The important distinction is that a Microsoft account is your login identity, while Microsoft 365 is an optional paid subscription that adds desktop Office apps, more storage and premium features.
What a free Microsoft account includes
A free personal account can provide access to several Microsoft services, subject to each service’s limits and availability:

The 5 GB Microsoft cloud quota and 15 GB Outlook.com mailbox quota are different. However, Outlook attachments are part of Microsoft’s shared cloud-storage system, so large attachments and OneDrive files can consume the same 5 GB allowance. What is not included for free
Having an account does not make every Microsoft product free. Payment may be required for:
- Installed desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The free account provides web apps, not the full Windows or Mac desktop suite.
- Additional OneDrive or Microsoft cloud storage.
- Ad-free Outlook.com, enhanced OneDrive security and recovery features, and certain support benefits.
- Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions.
- Paid Xbox games, Game Pass and other premium gaming features.
- Paid apps, games, films and other Microsoft Store purchases.
- Business Microsoft 365 services, which are administered separately from personal accounts.
Microsoft 365 Basic is a paid option focused on 100 GB of storage, ad-free Outlook.com, enhanced OneDrive features and support. It is not required for a normal free account. Personal and Family plans add desktop Office applications and substantially more storage; check Microsoft’s live comparison page for current regional pricing.

How to create a Microsoft account without subscribing
- Open Microsoft’s account-creation instructions, or go to Outlook.com.
- Select Create free account.
- Choose either a new Outlook.com address or Use your own email and enter an existing address.
- Create a password, provide the requested details and complete Microsoft’s verification steps.
- Review the account dashboard. Decline a trial, storage upgrade or Microsoft 365 purchase unless you specifically want it.
Using Gmail or Yahoo as the username creates a Microsoft account, but it does not create an Outlook.com mailbox or move your existing mail into Microsoft. Choose a new Outlook.com address if you want a Microsoft-hosted inbox. Microsoft says child-account setup requires a parent or guardian to complete the relevant steps.
Recognize the payment screens
Create account or Sign up refers to the free identity. Start trial, Buy Microsoft 365 and Upgrade storage are optional paid paths. A trial may request a payment method and renew into a paid subscription if it is not canceled. Whether a card is requested can vary by country and the current sign-up flow, so do not assume either that one is always required or never requested.

Can you use it on Windows without Microsoft 365?
Yes. A free Microsoft account can be used to sign in to Windows, connect OneDrive and Microsoft Store, and synchronize supported settings. It does not represent a Microsoft 365 purchase. Microsoft also documents a local-account option for Windows 10 and Windows 11. A local account stays tied to one PC and avoids cloud sign-in, while a Microsoft account offers more integration across Microsoft services. The setup choices available can depend on Windows edition, device and current setup flow.
What happens when the free storage fills up?
“Free” does not mean unlimited. If your Microsoft cloud storage exceeds its quota, Microsoft says new OneDrive files may fail to upload, edit or sync and existing files may become read-only. Outlook.com sending and receiving can also be affected; messages sent to an over-quota mailbox may be returned to the sender. Microsoft warns that OneDrive content can be deleted after six months in the relevant over-quota situation.

Before upgrading, check storage, remove unwanted photos and files, and delete large attachments or old mail. The storage problem can affect more than OneDrive alone.

A work or school account is different from a personal Microsoft account. An organization may issue and pay for it, set password policies and control the data. Microsoft explains the distinction in its account guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a Microsoft account with Gmail?
Yes. Gmail or Yahoo can be used as the username. That creates a Microsoft login but not an Outlook.com inbox; your existing mailbox remains with its original provider.
Is Outlook.com email free?
Yes, within Microsoft’s current service and storage limits. The free Outlook.com mailbox allowance is 15 GB, separate from the 5 GB shared Microsoft cloud-storage allowance.
Is Microsoft Word free?
Word, Excel and PowerPoint are free in the browser after you sign in. The installed desktop applications generally require a subscription or another valid license.

Microsoft documents local accounts as an alternative to Microsoft accounts in Windows 10 and Windows 11, although the available setup path can vary by edition and device.
Does a free Microsoft account include Xbox games or Game Pass?
It can provide Xbox account access and sign-in, but games, Game Pass and other premium features may cost extra.
